  • Woodworker, Michael Thompson has taken it upon himself to create a functioning bike from nothing but wood. In this awesome look into the science of creating a fully operational bike, Thompson describes the ideation and process of crafting a bike made almost entirely of wood. Watch him at work in his woodworking studio and see what he has dubbed the "Splinter bike" in action.

That is a Gorgeous Bike to! It would make a good beach cruiser bike, riding up and down the boardwalk, I think it would look better with the BeachCruiser style handlebars and seat....and those seats are so comfortable!,So that way the bike would be more comfortable with the seating and peddling position. Great job though.

The original Tour de France riders used bikes with wooden wheels; they were considered safer for braking since the wheels dissipated the heat from braking more than metal wheels (and the glue holding the tires on could heat up and the tire could roll off the rim with metal.)

love your bike, about to build full suss mtb (well starts working out if my shonky skill plus the rather lacking equipment can do it), the gears have to be around the crank, and the rear disk with drive/braking chains running to the rear within the rear triangle. no computers, pencil , rule and a wafer of delusion.
watching your vid has inspired to commit.

Nice! One thing: the seat post is way too long, but its just a minor problem, it can easily fixed by changing the frame geometry.

I know to build things properly it takes at the minimum two tries . Builders learn from the mistakes on the first build and improve the second build . I know that I couldn't pull of a decent wooden bike on the first build .
