Well done for the detailed stepwise removal and installation, with safety consciousness

Thanks! I feel like this is totally doable but that safety tip about the HV connection is a literal life saver!⚡️

Update: I bought an OEM battery from BMW for about $225. I could have bought an aftermarket option a little cheaper but they didn’t have it in stock and I needed to get it done. The job was actually a lot easier then it looked to me in the video. I think I got it all done in about 30-40min. My battery came fully charged from BMW and I verified that with a Multimeter. Had I not seen this video I would have had no idea about disconnecting the HV. So glad I learned about it before doing the job. It’s not exactly like changing your regular gas engine car battery. I bought a Veepeak OBD II Bluetooth reader on Amazon and registered the new battery Myself. The dongle was $25 but the Bimmer code app was like $35 :/ overall it’s a pretty pricy job for just changing a battery but the dealership was gonna charge $450 so in the end I saved money and got a new tool I can use for other jobs.

Thanks so much for making this video! I followed your steps exactly to replace the 12v battery in my 2018 i3. Like others mentioned in the comments, the various additional things needed added to the cost, but in the end it was cheaper than going to a dealer and now I have those tools and items for future use. Things I purchased: new Remy battery, BimmerLink iOS app, OBD bluetooth scanner, socket ratchet wrench set. (Also, I already owned a Battery Maintainer and it was useful to make sure the new 12v was fully charged before installing it.)

I’m about to do this same job on my wife’s 2017 i3. going to get the bimmer app for my iPhone so i can register the battery myself, but can you tell me what dongle i need for the port on the i3? many thanks for the calm and informative video!

Great question. Did he ever answer it. Seems you need Bimmlink App ($35) and this dongle $(30) to register the battery. No details on either. Bummer

How did you charge the new battery before insalling it?

Ok, it would be really helpful to zoom in to the places where you're removing/replacing things. If you don't know what the negative terminal, for example, looks like, .... just speeding through it doesn't help! You did one freeze frame with a red arrow. Please do that with a slow zoom to all points of contact. I'm not a mechanic and would like to be able to do this myself. But your video as is I'm not sure can help me. Also you showed an image of another example of the deadly orange thing you disconnected, but not how to disconnect it in the event you have it. And it doesn't help to zoom in AFTER you've reconnected the deadly thing. Show us how you do it. Please :(. Thanks.
