Lol! I can't believe how this has worked. I pulled one feldspar cluster out of the fissure that massive apatite came from. It's sat on the deck since then. I took a look at it 2 days ago, and thought "I maybe should have brought more of this back, it's pretty neat". Watched this today, and aren't you showing us Lost Mine feldspar, with pinfire. I go out on the deck, grab the cluster, scrub up a cleaved face, isn't there pinfire in it. Not as much as that Sundridge stuff, but more than none! I think mine is a K-spar tho. More pink. Can't thank you enough for opening my eyes! Cheers!
Wow so you have some as well? Nice! I was hoping someone would come forward saying they have some. So far I've only seen this at the Lost Mine and no where else. We've been to many sites and I always bring home Feldspar, nothing in any of them other then Lost Mine stuff. If that cluster you have is not overly worth keeping as is, you should throw in on your saw so you can see the pinfire better. It's pretty incredible stuff!
@@RoughMarket I just threw it in the ol bucket of acid for the night, then if that doesn't make it pop, I just may try some out on the saw. :) Thanks again man! It's always exciting discovering a new treasure on yer deck!
@@RoughMarket I put up a quick (and rough) video of that cluster. It's not in great focus, but you can see it on the right side, and it is indeed the pinfire.
Omg yesssssss! I just happened to click this because it sounded closest to what i have (im learning) This stuff is good then? I found a huge specimen in a sort of gabbro pegmatite rock in the park tree line of all places! I think it has a cinnabar looking quartz mixed in too maybe...ill make a video tomorrow if you want to have a look.
Me2. I have collected so much feldspar that now when I find it, I just wonder how far I can throw it. Until this video, I would not have looked for or noticed the pinfire.
For sure eh! Have a look at yours and let me know if see any pinfire, also not sure about Titanite hill, haven't found any there yet. Maybe though! It's almost impossible to see the fire on the outside, you would need a broken or chipped one to catch it. Maybe that's why it went unnoticed before as we all look out for the solid ones. I might try and slice some up that are odd ones and see what's inside those too.
I haven't brought much feldspar back from Titanite Hill. I have some huge pieces from other sites, but from a quick look, it is just feldspar. Too bad, one of the spots that took pieces almost too big to carry was supposed to have jewelry grade peristerite (moonstone). So far, no luck.
Thank you so much for this video. I drove by the kids camp last fall hoping to find someone who would give me permission to rockhound the shore. I could not find anyone, so did not go in. Until this video, I probably would have missed the good rocks anyway. You are a star!
Thanks meMiner, and welcome! Before we went I found almost nothing online about it which had us wondering why not.. after going we found out why! It's virtually impossible to get permission. We had to have 2 informal interviews and the last one was with the owner. We were escorted down to the red dot on google and had a heck of time finding it... she was beginning to wonder if we were legit! haha. We found it though and left some samples for the camp so they now know what's on the shore. If you do go, it's an all girls protected camp so maybe try in the off season. In the Spring though the black flies will eat you alive as we found out!
I'm planning another trip to the Lost Mine. As of now the plan is to be there all day Sat. July 20. I hope by chance you're there again! Hahaha! Cheers!
Hi Thirst Fast! Sorry been so busy this year with new projects. July 20th eh... Might be able to! send me an email and we'll keep in touch k! roughmarket@gmail.com
All of that material is awesome but that last one with the perfectly terminated apatite is WONDERFUL. I found this vid while searching for video of various types of feldspar that has chatoyancy or schiller effect to compare with several feldspars I've found in my wanderings in California mojave desert. These finds in particular have moonstone effect, one of which is just beautiful, dense blue adularescence. Alas, it's only about the size of a garbanzo bean 😏 Anyway I've also found a great deal of more opaque pale peach feldspars that have intense shifting reflection effects and I've found quite a few transparent ones that have a Schiller effect when positioned in certain ways, it reminds me of the pinfire, but all of the glitter is white. I'm still looking for a biggun. I'm just wandering around hunting through floaters, no mining or digging, but I've found huge chunks of jasper/agate and unique things (in my area) like pyrite crystals and even a 1inch diameter quartz point, the edges of which have been slightly softened, while still retaining shape. I'm really on a feldspar kick now. After the 10 or so gemmy bits I've found I'm dying to find more. Super jealous of these finds of yours 👌
I am wondering if the Pin-Fire might be in some way related to the Opal ? I will be heading up to the Lost Mine area on my mountain bike this summer , I will most definitely be searching for Pin-Fire . Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experiences. Best regards from Lloyd.
Hi highenergyog, I wish it were related to Opal, but sadly no. Opals are silicate based minerals and these are Feldspars. I know there's Opal out in B.C., but no stories of any in Ontario yet... if it's here I'll find it though!! haha. Good luck on the biking trip.. how are you going to come back with all the buckets strapped to the bike though? haha
Rough Market slowly - very slowly. The longest trip with a heavy load for me was a ride to and from London Ontario, I was carrying approximately 150 pounds of extra weight , the ride home ( back to Hamilton) took about 2 hours longer than it took me to get to London.
@@RoughMarket Feldspars are silicates. But you're correct that this isn't opalesence. I believe in feldspars it's referred to as 'labradoresence' after labradorite. Opalesence (from what I understand) is from spherules of hydrous silicates (a lot of the time volcanic ash that was soaked after extrusion) refracting light. I might be totally out to lunch on that, but pretty sure I read it somewhere.....
You're right, it's not a silicate, appears to be Hematite inclusions. You can see the black flecks in the other video I did with the cabs. Jury is still out on the correct name for this material as I can't find anything anywhere that describes what it is other then Lattice or Pinfire Sunstone.
Off the top of my head I can't remember, but I've seen it somewhere and I'm trying to recall where. That stuff at .058 is just beautiful. Are you going to cab it?
Thanks, ya that Sunstone is really nice material. It was hard as heck to get out big enough pieces to work with though. I've cabbed up a few small test ones, and just working on a few bigger ones now with amazing fire. Inspired by the recent Pinfire we picked up I re-visited the Sunstone. Did you see the new cabs in the video I just put up? Still can't believe it.
Hi froggleggers. We have lots of the Pinfire Plagioclase/Orthoclase, I'm finding more as I clean them. I've always liked the crystal formation so it's a bonus there is Pinfire in some. For the Sunstone we only have a very small amount. The reason is this occurrence is very small with little pockets locked in granite and very hard to get out. It's also extremely difficult to get permission to be out there as it's on protected private property. I can part with a few grams if people are interested in having a sample. Send me an email and we'll talk - roughmarket@gmail.com
@@RoughMarket ok, thanks. Im sure i have found some by now. I think i found an augen gniess with this as the big pyroclast Crystal in the middle. Just going to take me a while to extract the damn thing.
Thanks for the great vid! I never knew about Pinfire before. Time to check my Feldspars!
Glad to make the vid, had it on my mind for awhile and wanted to talk about it. I hope you have some too!

What is pinfire stone? Is it kind of opal stone?
Although it might look slightly like Opal, it's not in the same Mineral family. Sunstone is a type of Feldspar.
