- 22 year old A.I puts on a show against the visiting Lakers who have 19 year old Kobe Bryant coming off the bench.
An exciting action packed game which I taped off TV back in November 1997. This was Michael Jordan's last year in the league and I set the VCR that night thinking these 2 young guys (Iverson and Bryant) would be the ones to watch after MJ leaves and this would be a game to save. The tape lasted 12 years, and several house moves (across 3 countries!) before turning up in my 'Box of crap!' along with a stack of SLAM magazines and a Powerbook Duo (!!)
Anyway edited highlights for you right here. Enjoy! My favorite bit was Chick Hearn seemingly not having a clue who Will Smith was!!
probably the two most durable guards in the history of the game. took a beating every single night and still played their hearts out.
Iverson's athleticism is just unreal. To be that much faster and more agile than everyone else is just ridiculous. No one even comes close to his speed
This is so damn rare it's ridiculous. Thank you for posting this!!!!!
You won't find this anywhere.
''Iverson got two speeds, quick and quicker'' :DD
😂😂
This is old school. Jon Barry with a full head of hair? Most people now only know him as the crappy NBA on ABC analyst. Not having AI around for the past couple of seasons makes you forget just how quick he was. Great upload
Wow - great game. A lot of intensity in this one especially for a regular season game!
Agreed. Without his size, special treatment from the offense, and volume shooting Kobe would never have been a leading scorer. Iverson was practically forced to be a volume shooter and still shot 45% from the field and dished out 8 assists per game while he did.
A.I. = The Master
master of crossover
master of reverse lay-ups
master of pass
Master of Kobe
love your uploads man !
I love commentators that can talk fast like that lol
@HecticEthnic that honestly just made my evening, im glad some ppl in the world have some damn sense and actually look at all aspects of the situation!!
Also take note of this. Kobe was chosen for the all-star game in this season, this was the same seaon that he only started 1 game, averaged 15.4 ppg, 3.1rpg, and just 2.5apg.
Iverson started all of the 80 games that he played, averaged 22ppg, 6.2apg, 2.6 rpg, and even 2.2 stls.
Ray Allen started all 82 games, averaged 19.5ppg, 4.3apg, and 4.9apg.
For some reason Kobe played bench minutes and averaged bench numbers and was chosen as an all-star over two players doing more than him.
blacktee31 it’s a fan vote. Kobe got lots of votes from the fans, he was very popular. Especially when he played very well in a blowout loss to Chicago that year earlier in the season and it garnered lots of attention since he was one of the many marketed as the next Jordan.
The Lakers moved him along somewhat slowly due to his lack of college experience and having a talented backcourt already
Baldheadkid! Props for recording this. I remember watching this game and thinking we were gonna lose so I went outside to shoot hoopz. Y'all know ME! This is NPZ, your old homie. I got a PLETHORA of cogent comments from you on my vids. We go back a ways, homes. PEACE!!!11
haha sup NPZ!! hope you're good brother :)
NEVER FORGET EDDIE JONES, NEVER!!
Nice vid, u forget how sick iverson was
this was a strong team, AI with jim jackson, tim thomas, jerry stackhouse, witherspoon and montross..but sadly you know sixers draft good player and trade them after 2 years
best commentator ever
Thats the problem with players like iverson. Laziness,just because theyre good it doesnt mean they need to stop working on their game. Iverson was way better than kobe back then,youre definitely right,but when kobe realized that he wanted to be the best player he could be.. iverson was stuck on his level and kobe went on to be one of the greatest players to ever play the game maybe 2nd best. Theyre miles away from each other now
4 years later they meet again in the Finals ;D cool vid
It just doesnt make any sense, both of them were playing all-star minutes and putting up all-star numbers but a bench warmer(at the time) was chosen to play in the all-star game. Why? Because he was on the LA lakers and got more exposure as a rookie than two players that were more deserving.
@Disposable5 . okay lets be honest, everybody says everybody is the best player in the league when they either have one great game, great week , great month , or great year. kobe's percentages were only higher cuz he got quality shots cuz he had SHAQ. iverson had role players. to be successful you need another star. look at any championship team and youll see there 2 stars. and to end this convo, everybody has their own opinion. i say iverson was better back then ,u say kobe, both great ballers
why does edy jones have the same number as kobe back then they both have 8 on
yeah homie howd that turn out for a.i.
It is, you missed my point. Kobe was getting more exposure for playing for a team like the. LA is the team that is showcased the most and gets a lot of spots on tv, especially being 3rd in the confrence. There were much more deserving players who were just as exciting as Kobe that didnt make the cut, if a sophmore is in then the coaches should be looking at the other young talent playing at a higher level than the more popular one.
It would be like Norris Cole getting votes before Irving
@theanklebreaker2 .YES! EXACTLY! i am literally leaping for joy right now, im glad some people have some damn sense in this world.
it says -- error 244: failed to load pixel
i know this. but if you guard one of the quickest players, guarding everybody else is cake
Man Iverson for his size is the best player under 6"2 ever.
@alejandrothefader he's 5'10 listed as 6ft.
In other words the fans see more of one so they cant very well know how exciting or talented the other is.
Irving and Cole is a bad analogy though since Irving gets a little bit more exposure. I think Walker would be a better example.
@billyngchongwei no, it was only chick hern who commentated that way. he is the best play by play commentator of all time
@TheTranceSeeker
lol thanks!
In this video can be seen why Allen Iverson was picked up first in the 1996's draft. He totally deserved it, at that time he was much better than Kobe.
man the nba is not what it used to be......the game was so much better then
You say Selfish I say Legends.
@dparkertex I think its better man honestly. Lakers vs Boston era goin on then everyone else. Miami's big three. Madison Square Garden is back and Rockin. Both Texas teams are winning. There is a stud on almost every team now. The point guards in the leauge are fucking dunking on centers. Kobe is going for number 6 that is a good storyline through the playoffs. I mean the leauge is back.
Two number 8 on the court ? WTF
Hate to see him go. Jerry Stackhouse looking like Chris Brown lol
@Disposable5 iversons percentage went up when he went to go play with some talent with carmelo and the nuggets so yeah. oh yeah uhm. gm and coaches?? analysts gms, coachs, even players, say allen iverson was the best in his prime. iversons main prime was 98 to the 05-06 season. ppl didnt start saying kobe was all this and that next mj and shit till about 2006. thats some facts for yo ass
LA had tons of talent on that team
Killer instinct were MJ, Kobe, Iverson, assassins are Durant, Harden, Kuwhi
game that no one talks about lol!
lol chick hern. iverson has two speeds quick and quicker
What does that even have to do with the all-star game? Paul pierce played in the all-star game when the Celtics had the worst record in the league.
@MrDmm1990 iverson been more scoring champs, they have equal mvps, real talk, if iverson was 6'6 we dont know what would happen so theres no point of saying if
the gameplan was to let iverson get his and no one else.. which is why fish and lue guarded him...
if the lakers play around Kobe, he would easily average 25 points a game... he had way more talent than Eddie Jones
Penny? Seriously? Iverson is a PG, Hardaway defintely was exciting but not moreso than Iverson and Iverson had much more impressive numbers
@MrDmm1990 i know that i clearly said. && uhm no he doesnt. they both have 1 league mvp, ai in 2001. kobe in 2008. && if tim duncan hasnt retired then kobe does not have the most finals mvps,
Chicky BABY !!!!
Most of there matchups kobe would outplay iverson on both sides
if iverson had shaq he would win champion like 6 times..
@adventure1011y yeah.... thats what i was wondering... wth?
How Many Season Mvps u Have Means Nuthin, cause Honestly Jordan Should Have Like 9 Or 10 of them, An Kobe Should Have 4 or 5
Allen Iverson...simplemente el mejor
allen iverson iiz the man bro tha mii homeboii iigth there
@Disposable5 i really do actually. btw if kobe was better than iverson, thats why kobe never got his 1st mvp til 08, iverson got his in 01 (one of the years kobe was better than him), and iverson averaged over 2 steals in like every season or every season, how the hell did he not play defense?? over 2 on his whole damn career. kobe played shit defense back then. and kobes percentage went down cuz he had to take more shots cuz the lakers were weak! same thign ai did his whole career.
@MrDmm1990 i didnt wanna have to go here but honestly. kobe juss recently got better than iverson. for a long time it was all about iverson. and still theres ppl who would say iversons the best from the 96 draft class.
@lionelangemario Iverson > Kobe, don't know why the kid is even arguing...
@adventure1011y ohhhhh jones is number 6, it just looks like an 8
O, ok then that makes sense.
I think Kobe became a great defender from guarding Allen Iverson
if you take the two of them at their best levels each other...iverson is better than kobe...and i remember,kobe didn't like to play iverson...
Ai is d m0st entrtaining pg of all time, m0st of d y0ungstrs of his prime id0lizd him. Thats it!
+HPM Royale its his opinion lol.
@HPM Boss lol wrong
@MrDmm1990 no one gives a shit about all star mvps, when ppl look at jordans career how many ppl you know "oh and he won this many all star game mvps" no one cares.
@MrDmm1990 all star mvps dont have shit to do with the real mvp. & i know mj won 3, i was using an example. i knw kobe has like 4. but no one cares. its all about league mvps. championships. maybe scoring titles. if you wanna count all star shit, then they really care about appearances. the only time they talk about a.s mvps is when a.s weekend approaches.same with finals mvp, they really juss care about if you won or not. thats why before kobe won another 2. theyd be like "well kobe a 3x champ
Fans choose the starters for the All-Star squad ppl. The fans voted baby Jordan in and got their moneys worth! 16 yrs later still starting Lmao
Will and Jada.
Two of the most selfish players in the history of the game...
iverson at his best...clearly better than kobe at his best...no doubt.
@mikenotnumberone1
i don't know why you think that your opinion is so important,but keep talking for the sake of talking..if you have nothing else to do...
HAHAHA, .where is Kobe???
