Personally my favorite drumming of Dave pertaining to technicality is definitely South of Heaven the entire album. Esp on songs like Behind the Crooked Cross, and crazy double bass endurance on Silent Scream. For some reason Dave stated he hates the drumming on that album, but he was playing on another level with the drum fills and being more technical compared to his straight up thrash drumming like on Reign In Blood. Do a video on Paul Bostaph. Paul's drumming on Forbidden's first album Forbidden Evil is awesome. Even before he was in Slayer, he was already killing it Forbidden. There's footage of Paul performing with Forbidden on the Combat records Combat Tour 2 movie from 1988.
To me Dave Lombardo just sounds more organic than may other Metal drummers. On these isolated tracks I find the dynamics in the double bass for Raining Blood eye-opening. The different attack levels really shape the groove in that part.
For my money, Dave is the best thrash drummer. How hard he hits, how he drives the band and how he adds feel to double bass and thrash speed is what puts him in a class by himself.

Of that generation of drummers Mike Bordin of Faith No More is my favorite. Tribal, groovy and funky but HEAVY!!! One of the most underrated drummers in my 52 years of life.
I read in the Metal Blade records book that Dave recorded the drums for Show no mercy in two parts. All the cymbals on another day! That's crazy Edit: oops he mentioned it in the video. Cool!
Dave Lombardo is definitely in my top 5. I agree he's not the most technical drummer and some say he has timing issues. But for self taught and the way he has pioneered thrash metal, definitely one of the greatest...
When Dave started out, he was among the best of the best as far as drummers go. Hyper-speed double-bass drumming was a rarity then. Today however, you've got a shitload of death metal drummers out there who can play circles around Dave. What a difference a few decades makes.
Dave Lombard to me it is one of the best metal drummers out there. Precision and speed he's the man hands down. Seen him play a place called JJ Kelly's years ago and then everybody there was there because of Dave Lombardo. The dude is a god when it comes to the drums

G.O.A.T. confirmed It should be noted that he has been drumming with The Misfits recently - which was a surprise for this guy, until most of the way through the show, Glenn, The Main Man himself - announced the players... Wow! Those songs are NOT as simple as one may think - in that department. No wonder they sounded so good while keeping the energy to the max throughout! THAT is a perfect match, imo. One made in...well, let's just say south of...u get it.

It’s 100% Dave Lombardo is Slayers Best Drummer in my books! Wasn’t he also involved in Jazz Drumming at some point in his life? 😊

South of heaven is pure magic. It crossed all the lines that permanently defined thrash. Its their best work and daves best lp.
I’m NEW to drumming but not to Slayer.
I grew up when they and Metallica etc. were starting out.
Dave Lombardo just gives me an insane rush (I do love Rush also). The feeling of top of the line hardcore drums matched with Slayers intense everything else- yeah it’s just kick ass !
King of drumming is his majesty Pete Commando Sandoval, the best ever.Greetings from Bosnia,Samir.
Yeah pete rules
Of that generation of drummers Mike Bordin of Faith No More is my favorite. Tribal, groovy and funky but HEAVY!!! One of the most underrated drummers in my 52 years of life.
I would recommend Dave Lombardo self titled release, it’s a psychedelic world drum trip
I read in the Metal Blade records book that Dave recorded the drums for Show no mercy in two parts. All the cymbals on another day! That's crazy
Edit: oops he mentioned it in the video. Cool!
Those were the days; when you heard what the person was playing. Everything is so processed, sampled, spliced, and triggered, now.
Ghosts of War and Spirit in Black are my favorite drum tracks by Dave. 🤘
Ghosts of war is my all time favourite Slayer track, it is the epitome of thrash!
Dave is very organic & smooth 100% my favorite drummer
Dave Lombard to me it is one of the best metal drummers out there. Precision and speed he's the man hands down. Seen him play a place called JJ Kelly's years ago and then everybody there was there because of Dave Lombardo. The dude is a god when it comes to the drums
Dude, Dave's drum work with Empire State Bastards is amazing
Dave's style is like Barimore Barlow on crack. One of my favorites and I'm fortunate to have seen him several times back in the early days.
It's not only the technical side of it...the rate of AGGRESSION in a Lombardo drum fill is the thing. It hangs you on the wall by the throath
Am i the only one that could hear the rest of the song in their head while listening to the isolated clips
Was belting out lyrics over South of heaven bahahaha totally agree
I feel Tom Hunting of EXODUS is the best thrash drummer.drummers who have played in Slayer and Exodus say Tom is the most difficult to replicate
Awesome!! Dave rules!!! 👍
Dave is most definitely one of the best and always will be 🤘🏻
Dave is probably one if my favorite drummers to listen to and watch. Dave with the misfits live sounds like the albums but a bit faster and its always fun to see danzig try to keep up lol sadly i never saw dave with slayer
Most underrated recording of Dave is the Apocalyptica track Last Hope. His fills are ridiculous.
How do you work with this tracks? Damn listen to Dave Lombardo's isolated track is a journey
Hell yeah!!! G.O.A.T. confirmed
It should be noted that he has been drumming with The Misfits recently - which was a surprise for this guy, until most of the way through the show, Glenn, The Main Man himself - announced the players... Wow! Those songs are NOT as simple as one may think - in that department. No wonder they sounded so good while keeping the energy to the max throughout! THAT is a perfect match, imo. One made in...well, let's just say south of...u get it.
Yeah man awesome video , can you do a drummer series including Paul Bostaph , Jon Dette , Charlie Benante , and Tom Hunting
Dave definitely was a drumming pioneer for sure.
Seeing Lombardo doing solo drumming shows he is way better a drummer than he ever got to demonstrate while in Slayer.
Both please
I don’t care what people think, he is one of my top favorite drummers, his drumming a d rhythm is just bad ass and his fill are so tasty. 🤘🐻🤘
Lombardo is my favorite drummer ever and I’m on his side in his feud with Slayer (he’s since moved on and wish the band well but Kerry is still a baby about the whole thing)
Dave is the main way they were able to tour without a bass player all those years
he is one of the best drummers there is... and my absolute favorite \m/
He’s the best, hopefully coming to N VA one more time this year!😊
I prefer the 1985' Dave Lambardo show no mercy live, you should show that video too.
A video about Bostaph would be cool :)
In my honest opinion, the drummers that truly pushed the boundaries and revolutionized metal drumming was Dave of course, Charlie Benante, Clive Burr and last but certainly not least, Gar Samuelson!!! R.I.P CLIVE BURR AND GAR SAMUELSON!!🤘🤘
he's my favorite by far.
I’m not reading all of the comments. But I think there’s better examples off of “Reign” than could have been used. Just my opinion. No matter what, you can’t deny that Dave is a great drummer. Dave “jazzy” Lombardo. Great person. Great drummer
Dave kicks everybody’s ass. There’s a live Silent Scream and a Mess Around cover here on RUclips that just destroy.
Dave said he never warms up before a show.
Dave FOREVER!
Tom Hunting never gets the praise he deserves
Goat 🤘 single stroke master, leads with the left hand, still going sick in Mr bungle, nothing but quality and brutality!!!!!
Not just thrash. Dave is one of the greatest drummers ever
Agree with all this and love Lombardo! Later stuff from him would be best for me. I was intrigued to hear how his timing on Raining Blood is actually a bit off - nobody is perfect I guess!?
Thanks for sharing.
Dave is pure genius on drums, Paul is more metronome oriented, but I can watch both of them all day long!! Slayer forever 🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾
They dont give Dave the props he deserves...back in the day he was the universal legend...so tasty
Not only the best drummer, the best percussionist
