    We have a Water Apple Tree in our yard and I won't say it's my favorite fruit, however on hot summer days it's really refreshing to have them(specially the refrigerated W-apples), and I thought what we have is a Rose Apple tree however I always wondered why the ripened fruits in our tree are much floral and less sweeter taste than the Rose Apples I've had in the past + the shape is little different as well but it is today... thanks to this video of yours I've learned what we have is a Water Apple tree. When I was a kid I used to pick Red rose apple flowers and eat them and to me it has a Floral, sour & sweet taste aaaand I'm still alive, so I think those "Bright pink colored" Red Rose Apple flowers are edible. However I was Googling and found out... This -> "Rose Apple possess the risk of toxicity. The seeds and roots are poisonous. The leaves, roots and stems of the plant contain the mysterious amount of cyanide or prussic acid or hydrocyanic acid which could be harmful."

    • @WeirdExplorer
      @WeirdExplorer  8 лет назад +7

      Glad to help! I think generally rose apple refers to only one species of Syzagium and water apples refer to several species. I've never tried the flowers before, sounds good... though I would be cautious eating them if so many parts of the tree are poison.

      The best way to eat rose apple are you dip it on soy sauce mixed with a bit of chillies and sugar

    I wonder if these are related to Australian lilly pillies??? They look like a giant version of them and your taste profile sounds like them as well. They grow wild in Australia like water apples grow in their native countries too.

    It would be sooo nice to try one of those big red ones... the flowery description and that crisp texture are so desirable sounding. How do we get growers in the US to embrace these juicy little rubies!

  • @lorez201
    @lorez201 8 лет назад +2

    Probably not Syzygium aromaticum, which is what cloves come from. The fruits would be smaller and possibly more strongly flavored, corresponding to the aroma of cloves. What you had were more likely S. aqueum and/or S. samarangense.

    There are white, red, and pink varieties of water apples. I think the light-colored one wasn't unripe; it was just a different variety.

    The redder ones kinda taste like hibiscus. The greener ones taste more like apples. I was wondering if I was eating the same fruit lol

      Hibiscus is a good description for it. :)

    I'm surprised you hadn't noted that the younger jambos have the tart cottony/mildly astringent quality vs. the quite ripe, near watermelon zone. Like an unripe tomato, it can be quite flavorless. Possibly the most popular garden craft, the hunt for a fresh ripe tomato. A lot of fruits have that incredibly short perfect ripeness window and most rose apples are consumed chilled and chopped up for 5 spice dipping. The locals don't call them jambos? They're a little like reverse star fruit in how they're refreshing. Some even have a similar kind of garbage fiber part, more so with star fruit. Pretty sure those astringent starches are what need to break down to become ripe. Green bananas have a slightly grassy, refreshing quality just like green papaya is practically a vegetable-- but I like wheat grass and think it tastes like photosynthesis and fresh cut lawn so what do I know?

    • @vykx88
      @vykx88 6 лет назад

      ingineous this is a different variety though. Regular otaheites are much bigger, gets darker and sweeter as they ripen. These guys? Not so much. They look exactly like the ones in the vid, paler, crunchier to the bite and it has an aromatic flavour like rosewater. Well, that's what it reminds me of anyway.

    Is this the same as a wax apple? I am currently living in Grenada, West Indies and in January I bought these when they were green and they tasted different than the ones I bought in August (this month) which were red. I am so confused as to why they're different! Maybe the season?

    • @WeirdExplorer

    • @rbtmdl
      @rbtmdl 6 лет назад

      The taste of the canned ackee reminds me of poke salad. My partner loves poke salad and I pick it for her every spring. Poke also has beautiful purple berries that I have been told are highly poisonous. The only use I know of for them is to mix the juice with egg yolk to use as ink or paint. I hear that fresh ackee is also poisonous and you have to process them like you have to with poke to make them edible.
