We have a Water Apple Tree in our yard and I won't say it's my favorite fruit, however on hot summer days it's really refreshing to have them(specially the refrigerated W-apples), and I thought what we have is a Rose Apple tree however I always wondered why the ripened fruits in our tree are much floral and less sweeter taste than the Rose Apples I've had in the past + the shape is little different as well but it is today... thanks to this video of yours I've learned what we have is a Water Apple tree. When I was a kid I used to pick Red rose apple flowers and eat them and to me it has a Floral, sour & sweet taste aaaand I'm still alive, so I think those "Bright pink colored" Red Rose Apple flowers are edible. However I was Googling and found out... This -> "Rose Apple possess the risk of toxicity. The seeds and roots are poisonous. The leaves, roots and stems of the plant contain the mysterious amount of cyanide or prussic acid or hydrocyanic acid which could be harmful."
Glad to help! I think generally rose apple refers to only one species of Syzagium and water apples refer to several species. I've never tried the flowers before, sounds good... though I would be cautious eating them if so many parts of the tree are poison.
I wonder if these are related to Australian lilly pillies??? They look like a giant version of them and your taste profile sounds like them as well. They grow wild in Australia like water apples grow in their native countries too.
It would be sooo nice to try one of those big red ones... the flowery description and that crisp texture are so desirable sounding. How do we get growers in the US to embrace these juicy little rubies!
Probably not Syzygium aromaticum, which is what cloves come from. The fruits would be smaller and possibly more strongly flavored, corresponding to the aroma of cloves. What you had were more likely S. aqueum and/or S. samarangense.
I'm surprised you hadn't noted that the younger jambos have the tart cottony/mildly astringent quality vs. the quite ripe, near watermelon zone. Like an unripe tomato, it can be quite flavorless. Possibly the most popular garden craft, the hunt for a fresh ripe tomato. A lot of fruits have that incredibly short perfect ripeness window and most rose apples are consumed chilled and chopped up for 5 spice dipping. The locals don't call them jambos? They're a little like reverse star fruit in how they're refreshing. Some even have a similar kind of garbage fiber part, more so with star fruit. Pretty sure those astringent starches are what need to break down to become ripe. Green bananas have a slightly grassy, refreshing quality just like green papaya is practically a vegetable-- but I like wheat grass and think it tastes like photosynthesis and fresh cut lawn so what do I know?
Aachal Sharma check out in the Asian grocery stores 99 Ranch or the likes, and sometimes in Sprouts. I think I had bought them from Sprouts, they have a section in the fruit section in Woodland Hills.
ingineous this is a different variety though. Regular otaheites are much bigger, gets darker and sweeter as they ripen. These guys? Not so much. They look exactly like the ones in the vid, paler, crunchier to the bite and it has an aromatic flavour like rosewater. Well, that's what it reminds me of anyway.
Is this the same as a wax apple? I am currently living in Grenada, West Indies and in January I bought these when they were green and they tasted different than the ones I bought in August (this month) which were red. I am so confused as to why they're different! Maybe the season?
Depending, they can be green, white, pink, red, and sometimes rainbow...all being different cultivars of the same species. Wax Jambu is the common name if you were to look into buying either the fruit or the tree. Chris
When eating something that is called an "apple" for its taste, I would automatically assume that the same rules most likely apply. It seems syzygium is no different.
The taste of the canned ackee reminds me of poke salad. My partner loves poke salad and I pick it for her every spring. Poke also has beautiful purple berries that I have been told are highly poisonous. The only use I know of for them is to mix the juice with egg yolk to use as ink or paint. I hear that fresh ackee is also poisonous and you have to process them like you have to with poke to make them edible.
Man, that intro music is SO loud. I had my earphones on and it was like a kangaroo was kicking me around by the ears. I gotta remember to turn my volume setting way down before clicking your videos.
First time travelling Asia so naturally I'm buying all the fruit I've been seeing on your channel for years! Finally! :D
donghövve That's so nice to hear! happy hunting :)
I hope you found some gems!
@@DankFroot I sure did! I remember going ham on the snake fruit and only after finding out too much of them cause constipation hahahah

I ate the flowers to and the leaved
The best way to eat rose apple are you dip it on soy sauce mixed with a bit of chillies and sugar

Yeap they are related, and taste fairly similar.
Same genus, Syzygium
Water apple,..
velvet apple,..
rose apple,..
apples to dapples I'm jealous! 😆

Thanks for the info!
me and my friends used to climb up the three and pick these fruits to eat back when i was living in the philippines.
Same here.... With neighbor's tree.
I love these, the local grocer called them waxy apple? very juicy and crispy, reminds me of nashi pear
Thats interesting, I believe in Malaysia some people call this "wax jambu"
There are white, red, and pink varieties of water apples. I think the light-colored one wasn't unripe; it was just a different variety.
The redder ones kinda taste like hibiscus. The greener ones taste more like apples. I was wondering if I was eating the same fruit lol
Hibiscus is a good description for it. :)

The one I have at my backyard are big and super sweet. It's darker shade color, kinda Burgundy color.
nice!
water apple/wax jambu is one of the best fruits.
Agreed. It's such a refreshing fruit.
You get it in US, in the LA area grocers....found in India too.
Bikram Das around what time of the year in LA and where in LA ?
Aachal Sharma check out in the Asian grocery stores 99 Ranch or the likes, and sometimes in Sprouts. I think I had bought them from Sprouts, they have a section in the fruit section in Woodland Hills.
Ok thanks I have craving for these it's been years since I have had it
called otahiti apples in Jamaica. ..and they get to a darker red the more they ripen. you were eating semi ripe apples.
ingineous this is a different variety though. Regular otaheites are much bigger, gets darker and sweeter as they ripen. These guys? Not so much. They look exactly like the ones in the vid, paler, crunchier to the bite and it has an aromatic flavour like rosewater. Well, that's what it reminds me of anyway.

I believe wax apple also refers to several fruits of the syzagium genus
Talking aboit the jianbing, have you tried replacing the sheet with poppadum?
thats a good idea! I haven't tried that.
Just bought a Malay apple or rose apple plant. Thanks forgotten the info. I hope the fruit will be good tasting.
Farisa Smith Good luck with your plant! Do you like in a tropical area? Because the plant requires pretty warm and wet growing conditions.
Yes I do. The tree is doing well. It's about 3 feet now.
I like water apples easy to eat, lots of fruit. Alittle sweet. Over all good to eat
We call that Macopa
Have you tried road apples?
Are these as a kid in Nigeria. Wish I could find them again
Do the greener ones ripen and turn red? Sorry for all the comments! lol
Depending, they can be green, white, pink, red, and sometimes rainbow...all being different cultivars of the same species. Wax Jambu is the common name if you were to look into buying either the fruit or the tree. Chris
does these grow differently from the rose apples?
Do you know if we can order these anywhere?
bug = bonus!
where can I buy thoes? they look delisiouse
i have a lot in my backyard....i can share you free if you want
Were are you located?
This variety probably rarely leaves Indonesia but you can find imported rose apples around May. I find them in Chinatown.
in Malaysia we called that "jambu"
You should try Beach Apples next, they are much tastier than Water Apples.
I'll look for them, thanks!
You lil prankster :P
Syzygium aromaticum are cloves

sounds good!
Jared, do you have a PO box or other postal address?I want to send you a weird fruit.
The two fruits you ate were not ripe at all. Also called poerac or rose apples.
When eating something that is called an "apple" for its taste, I would automatically assume that the same rules most likely apply. It seems syzygium is no different.
They grow near my home
PS in Colombia
I thought for the longest time that Water Apples and Rose Apples were the same.
I tried crunchy dates and got terrible dry-mouth from just nibbling on it.
I bought a bunch this week too. I don't mind the dry mouth a little. You can also let them shrivel a bit, which makes it less astringent
I ripened them for days and I still got awful drymouth.
ah no.. maybe they were picked too early.
Jared Rydelek Right, have you ever reviewed an exotic vegetable?
nope! Fruit is keeping me too busy. Maybe in the future
try cempedak or cempejack
I made a video years ago on cempedak. Haven't had the cempejak though :)
Hey, can you do a video on Ackee?
I love the canned stuff, but haven't come across a fresh one yet. Jamaica is high on my visit list, so hopefully I'll get one soon!
Jared Rydelek Yeah I have never had fresh either.
The taste of the canned ackee reminds me of poke salad. My partner loves poke salad and I pick it for her every spring. we call these "Makopa" in the Philippines
Tambis, makopa, yambo, they are all different. These ones are probably different too from the aforementioned ones too.
Man, that intro music is SO loud. I had my earphones on and it was like a kangaroo was kicking me around by the ears. I gotta remember to turn my volume setting way down before clicking your videos.
Anyone else have this issue? Thanks for pointing it out, I'll turn it down :)
Absolutely!
