What's funny about this video is...at the top of the first hill, I still got the same reaction as to when I was on the ride itself...and I didn't ride this coaster much, as I've NEVER been a fan of coasters...but brothers/sister/friends will peer pressure you into doing things. Think I visited Whalom Park every summer from 1973 until 1986....then back several times from 1993-1995 as I was a student at Fitchburg State. Great place to lose an afternoon taking a break from school...or down the street at the driving range. Good times for sure!
My Pops was all about the Picnic Tables. And would bring the grill and set up our area for the day. I would want to go on the rides. But Pops wanted everyone to chill at the Picnic Tables and spend time with the Family. Good memories
It may not look like much, but this was the scariest ride I've ever been on. It was so old and rickety, you weren't sure if it was structurally sound, and I could feel it shaking the entire time.
Back in the late 40's my mom and dad would go on dates there. At least I was able to bring my kids there before they closed the park. Now it's all condos.
Looks like this roller coaster had a lot of similarities to the Wildcat at Lake Compounce in Ct. Probably a great substitute coaster that you can still ride today to get that same feel.
Thanks for the share, man, this brings back memories. I remember reading that some of the parts of the park are in a museum. Also, I think before it's closing that it was the oldest operating park in America, or one of them.
God that thing terrified me! My brother was 7 years older than me and also worked at the park in the late 80s. He would have his friends that were working the rides let me on when i was WAYYY to little to be on them 😂 I was 5 when I first rode on this and I remember my brother holding me down by my little backpack thing. I was addicted immediately and loved how scary it was, especially with the stories about how the thing flew off the tracks 3 times in its lifetime😮 I'm really heartbroken that my kid didn't get the chance to grow up with Whalom as well
It is a shame that everything in this once great park is gone. I thought that perhaps at least the coaster could be saved. But instead just about everything was cannibalized for parts and the frames were left to rot. I think by 2006 though, everything left standing was leveled. So there no chance of Whalom ever returning now.
I remember there was this ride, I think it was called, the spider, it went up in the air and spun around really fast, I literally almost died one time, the bars that hold you in, were not secure enough and you would slide around everywhere, I was holding on for my life, if I didn't try to hold on really tight, i would have flew right out of that thing, it was so friggin scaryI I think I was like 11 or 12, i will never forget that!
my 40 yr old heart breaks when i see whalom footage, but i guess im a gluttan 4 punishment. that place was priceless 2 me, memories have no pricetag
Agreed. I’m 36 and it feels like yesterday. Miss it for sure, lot of great memories.

I loved Whalom Park! I was probably working the bumper cars when this video was taken 🤣 I worked there the last 3 years it was open.

it wasnt structurally sound at all, you can see plenty of rot and patches if you look close, but that was part of the fun for sure.
A huge bolt fell out of nowhere right at my feet as I waited in line with my bestie. We looked at eachother & 🤷, went on & lived 😂

I lived in Mason, NH in the late 90's and used to drive by it.
The "Flyer Comet" coaster looked like a good family ride within a compact layout. Thanks for posting.
I miss this ride and this park!
Our family frequented Whalom Park in the 70's. Thanks for the trip down memory lane with this excellent video! Good times. Kinda sad it is gone.
This brings back memories
This makes me want to cry. I grew up at Whalom Park. Too bad its gone...
Its depressing that I lived so close to where a great park USED to be....and I was too late.

thanks for posting. brings back great memories. its touch and go
Thank you for sharing. Many great memories at Whalom Park. This was the first roller coaster I ever road :)

For the most part this ride seems a bit weak, but that black hole tunnel is genius. It's basically the entire ride. Wish I could have experienced it.

didn’t happen
@@WCfanboy Lol ok sure!🤣👍🏻
@@Mrd9960 can you send a link to something about the ride so I can see where you’re coming from
@@WCfanboy Maybe it wasn't called the spider, I just remember a ride that was colored black and it spun around in the air.
@@WCfanboy I'm positive it was at Whalom Park, that's the only amusement park I went to as a kid.
What a shame
Anyone think on recreating this coaster on Roller Coaster PC games or Planet Coaster on your PS4, PS5 or Xbox?
