The whole Close To The Edge album is stupendous. The lead side (whole side 20 minutes) is considered the peak of the early 70's prog rock. Siberian Khatru closes with a rock banger that features Rick Wakeman ripping on a Thomas Goth harpsichord. Real strings, no electronics from early 20th century. Shreds it like a guitar
WELCOME BACK to the most ADVENTUROUS band in modern music!!! YES, the word, is synonymous with positivity, hope, uplifting, optimism, joy, happiness, LOVE! YES were all those things instrumentally, vocally & and lyrically. "A Man conceived a moments answer to the dream." is simply about, the point of realizing the purpose of Life. "Stay in the flowers daily sensing all the themes" is being with Nature experiencing and staying aware of all it's cycles & changes (which dictates so much of our lives throughout our time here.). It's a song about experiencing the wonders of life through the World in pursuit of the beauty, bliss & true inner meaning of our existence. The "You" in You & I" can be symbolic of a Lover, Humankind and/or The Most High! The lines are clearly metaphorically philosophical & abstractly poetic with profoundly spiritual undertones.
Nice description of this marvellous music. There are so many layers to their music, each listen brings out something new. So it looks like that you are partial to Chris Squires bass. I'm kind hesitant to suggest you listen to the title track of Close to the Edge (which has some real crunching bass in it) cause it requires a lot of understanding of how Yes approaches composition. It starts out quite chaotic with a jazz infused jam session -- but it's oh so marvellous - then it carries the listener thru an incredible journey that only Yes can do. So if you're up for a musical challenging but most exquisite experience CttE will deliver. Nearly equally as challenging and just as amazing and a lot shorter are Heart of the Sunrise and Sound Chaser. A more listener friendly track but again with some amazing upfront bass lines is the Long Distance Runaround/The Fish combo (they have to be listened together) - actually this is what you should listen to next.
Close to the Edge is one of the greatest progressive rock epics ever concieved. It was their peak period, I highly recommend tbd rest of the album. The release before it, Fragile was the 'other' masterpiece.
Always a nice find - first reactions to this classic are always wonderful. Subscribed 😊 I’m now waiting eagerly for the title track, “Close to the Edge.” The most perfect song IMHO.
These guys could do no wrong during this period. They put out the Yes album, fragile and then close to the edge in a pretty short period of time. Creativity just oozed out of these guys.
Nice reaction. Try Siberian Khatru next ... then the title track. Then skip forward to 2024, the song "Once Upon a Dream" from the album "True" by Jon Anderson & The Band Geeks.
@HEDoubleX You'll get treated by Chris Squire's sublime bass playing on Siberian Khatru and Close to the Edge. Completely mind-blowing. Then, Richie Castellano (Band Geeks) is also a marvelous bass player. The rest of the Geeks are amazing musicians.
You need to listen to the rest of the album. Side one "Close to the Edge" is considered one of the best if not THE best prog rock songs ever. Then you must listen to "Awaken" and "The Gates of Delirium". And many more.
I don't know about the best band ever! They are great, but let's not forget, Genesis, Rush, Pink Floyd and other progressive pioneers. The best decade ever, for sure. And Yes, they are awesome live.
