    JEFF, I think it's great showing regular folks steps in making pipes. It is sad when some artisans guard it all like some big secret. GREAT JOB THANK YOU.

    Love the video and proud of you and your work! What you make is beautiful, both because of the craftsmanship and because of your obvious passion for the camaraderie and memories made when people share in a ritual. I'm sorry that some people don't see it that way. Smoking isn't for everyone, and obviously comes with health risks - but so do lots of things in life. Sharing a pipe with a friend or loved one, much like sharing a glass of wine, can be such a powerful bonding experience. Keep up the good work! I am seriously tempted to buy one of your pipes for my dad!

    Good video, anyone who spends time sitting at the work bench in the garage / shop is a peaceful person.
    What type of dye / finish did you put in the bowl of this pipe?

    • @jalanpipes
      @jalanpipes  9 лет назад +1

      FirehouseMike No dyes are used in the bowl. The black coating is a mixture that pre-treats the wood with activated charcoal to neutralize the flavor (so you may taste your tobacco more transparently), protect the wood during the first few uses, as well as make it look more finished.

    Wow! I can't believe how many people out there are so negative. I wonder what all the critics out there do for a living and spend their energy and if it helps the human race. Using some of their logic a car maker/designer is just making a killing machine. The appreciation of aesthetic, reward of ritual and relaxation really are worth smoking a pipe. But many buy these little guys to not smoke but to enjoy as an appreciation of craft like one who would purchase a well hand made knife and never use it. I personally believe they are made for smoking so don't waste it but to each his own. "At home, at sea on land, abroad, I smoke my pipe and worship God." --J.S. Bach

      +Pavle Pavlovic I just placed 19th in a slow smoke competition of 42 people, my time was 44:21. I have been smoking for nearly a year now and I just figured out how to smoke. First, don't get discouraged by tongue bite, I am just now getting over my tongue bite from the competition and it was three days ago. Tongue bite is what you experience from smoking hot, i.e. smoking to fast and to hard. Slow down, sip the pipe and smoke tobacco by enjoying the process and flavor and not the end result. Second, a cheap pipe can have an impact on how you are forced to smoke, a poor draft hole will make it impossible for you to get a good intake and leave your tobacco at the bottom of the bowl moist and nasty. Find a pipe within the 40-60 dollar range on Ebay, preferably an estate pipe from Peterson, Savinelli, GBD, Wessex, these are all good starting points for pipe smokers, make sure it is clean before you smoke out of it but try to leave some cake on the bowl if there is any, that should help it to burn cooler as well. Third, the tobacco you smoke is undeniably the most important aspect of pipe smoking enjoyment. Virginia tobacco burns hot, meaning that if you smoke it too fast and with too heavy of a draw, it will burn your mouth. Really, any tobacco can burn you if you smoke it wrong, but I feel there is a generally consensus that blends like Lane 1-Q are a great start for smokers who have trouble with tongue bite. Either way, don't buy drugstore blends, there are some that are great but most are not. Use matches when you can and only light the smallest amount possible, hold the flame above the tobacco and draw it into the bowl. Tamp down after the initial light with whatever pipe tamper you have and re light using the same method. After the second light you should have a great cherry going in your bowl, don't get nervous, it will probably go out, but as you smoke take note on what kind of draw it takes to keep it going and what kind it takes to smoke it. It is on fire, it will smoke, you don't always have to suck through the pipe with the force of a hoover to keep it on fire, unless of course your draft hole in your pipe is the width of a human hair. Good luck!

      James Lloyd i am honered to get aresponse from expirienced smoker , but i must say i am not from a ritch country , and even worse im from rural parts of it , tho i have money to spend ,prodacts are hard to find. Believe it or not , i went in a local shop and i was amazed when i saw that they have Mac baren rolling tobaco, as low on list as it is , its rare to see any so i got it , Opened it home and it was bone dry with fungi all over it . Thank god i have sister in Germany and she sends me some quality stuff but this shiping shit and spoiled goods to third world countrys gets on my nerves ....I realised everthing youve said , i must burn it slow cuz hot tobaco vapor bites as it carries all sorts of stuff , so i use filters , smoke slow and in small dosses ...tho i can burn a pipe 30 minutes + that kind of smoking always ends up with a tongue bite especially in my cheap pipe ..i will try with a good one when i get it , but as you see i must be carefull in third world countrys they can sell you shit for 100e and call it whatever they want , and i thing the shape is not all size for all, so i must experiment before making that decision. Or maybe try Nargila ,

      ***** WebMD:
      Cancer: Even if you don't inhale, you can get a number of different cancers from smoking pipes and cigars. People who smoke cigars regularly are four to 10 times more likely than nonsmokers to die from cancers of the mouth, larynx, and esophagus. Oral cancer can develop anywhere the smoke touches, including the lips, mouth, throat, and tongue. People who inhale also increase their risk for cancers of the lung, pancreas, and bladder.
      Lung disease. Cigar and pipe smoking double the risk for the airway damage that leads to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a lung disease that includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Smoking can also worsen existing asthma.
      Heart disease. Smoking cigars or pipes increases the likelihood of having heart disease or a stroke. Cigars boost the risk of early death from coronary heart disease by 30%.
      From WebMD
      www.webmd.com/smoking-cessation/effects-of-smoking-pipes-and-cigars
      Again, i love the idea of artisans, imagination, creating quality hand made things which last more than life time but why not put all that amazing ingenuity, creativity and passion into something which creates health, happiness, and improves humanity in some way? Even creating some really cool and fancy wooden cups would be a lot more creative and positive.
      When 20,000 people die of cancer every day (including my grandfathers) its hard to see that his passion and creativity is used in such a way.

    • @jalanpipes
      @jalanpipes  10 лет назад +8

      Max Sidorov I get it. We all do. There are risks when we make choices. If you are unwilling to accept a possible risk associated with this, then maybe it isn't for you. As for me, I need to hop in my car and drive on the freeway right now. Yet another risk...

    • @mirsidorov5112
      @mirsidorov5112 10 лет назад +3

      jalanpipes Its just that your passion and creativity can be used to create something which in some way makes people better, stimulates happiness or goodness. I probably sound like some old lady with a cane yelling at the young kids, but in our day where there is so much out there that creates negativity, and ill health, anything that does the opposite would be that much better.
      And comparing pipe smoking to driving on the freeway is like comparing flying to skydiving. And even that is a bad example. Everything has risk, some risk you have to take, like being alive, or making lifestyle choices which will, without a doubt lead to you being worse than you were before. Even doctors admit that more than 50% of cancers could be wiped out simply by changing our lifestyle choices, like smoking.
      Its like we see all these people dying and suffering, we donate to causes, do runs or whatnot and then turn around and make things which add to the dying and suffering. And it being handmade or "artisan" somehow makes it not a part of the big picture.
      I used to smoke, but that was because i was young and stupid and fell for the marketing and saw others do it. It doesn't matter if it was a cigarette or a handmade pipe, I was also part of it, not only adding that much more toxic stuff into me, but being a walking promotion for this business.
      Life is life, and people do what they choose to do, like you, but I just wish your amazing creativity and passion could be used to make our world just a little bit better.
