  • Do you know what Tonkatsu is? It's a deep fried pork cutlet with brown sauce. It was inspired by pork chops and Worcestershire sauce from Europe.

Over the years when I learned how to speak it, now I speak more of it than usual so I was struggling to speak in English with my friends (we communicate in English usually but also Chinese)

I love Tonkatsu, and especially Tonkatsu sauce! Where I'm from (UK) pork chops are usually served fried or roasted with a side of apple sauce. I prefer and love the crunch of Tonkatsu though.

The next time I visit Tokyo, which hopefully will be next year, I will have to try the breaded pork chop. I too, think I would prefer the breaded pork chop over the pork chop in apple sauce! I grew up in the US, but moved to England, and my mom used to make fried pork chops then made a gravy , had rice to go with it. A typical southern US dish. Thank you for sharing this vlog, it gave me something new to try when visiting Tokyo next year.

We have somthing very similar to tonkatsu here in Denmark. Our version is called "koteletter". A "kottelet" is actually just a pork cutlet. We coat the cutlet in egg and then in breadcrumps, which is slightly finer than panko. We then fry the breadcrump-coated cutlets on a pan with a LOT of butter. Traditionally there's always excess butter left in the pan, we use that butter for the sauce. My mom always fried the pork cutlets in a lot of butter so there were always enough butter left in the pan for sauce. It was so yummy! :D

This reminded me so much of Schnitzel. Although Schnitzel mainly uses chicken for the meat, it's not uncommon for people to use pork. You also dip the meat in flour egg and breadcrumbs. There are usually side dishes like, potatosalad, or veggies that come with the meal!

I just made tonkatsu dinner last Sunday. I skip the flour and just use egg dip and panko. I also shred cabbage and make daikon oshinko and Persian cucumber kimchi to eat with it. My favorite tonkatsu sauce is Kagome brand. Oishi! I love your videos!

Ah, so katsu also means victory? That makes more interesting meaning in Yuri On Ice. Yuri's favorite food is katsudon and there is a character he becomes close to named Victor.

where I am from in Vietnam, pork cutlets are usually thick slices of pork belly roasted until the skin gets crispy. it is often seasoned with a mixed spice rub and cooked on a pan, then served with hot steam rice and sour pickled vegetables.

In Taiwan there's a restaurant that does this style Tonkatsu but we grind the sesame seeds and mix with vinegar to put in the shredded cabbage as a salad dressing. The tonkatsu sauce is on the side.

I love each and every variation of Tonkatsu! I even make it in my home in San Francisco - and I have an amazing very traditional 40+ yr old Japanese restaurant next door. But when I get lazy, or tired Restaurant Tanuki makes the most amazing katsu (and an amazing nameko soup), Thank you for sharing your favorites.
