I have loved Ann Sothern for many decades but just discovered her great singing voice! She was classically trained by her Mother who was a concert singer. Ann Sothern won awards for musical compositions three years in a row when she was a teenager and was also an excellent pianist.

Ann Sothern just had personal sparkle. Her hair was always very teased and big, yet somehow delicate and flattering to her soft face. Love her charm.

I agree, a very charming woman. I would never be in her league, so to speak, but you can imagine that she must have been very enjoyable to be around. A terrific guest or hostess.
I always loved how her tv shows ended with her pulling her boss out of a mess that he had created for himself....she always played the loyal "right hand". And since she was the producer of her tv shows (AnSo Productions) you knew it wasn't just someone else's idea for a cute ending.

Please view Sam Levenson in the context of the times. By all accounts when I was growing up, he was known as a warm, funny, lovable and kindly man: a mensch if you will. I remember him for two reasons.
First, his articles were often printed in "Reader's Digest", always putting a smile on my face and a chuckle in my belly.
Second was because Sam didn't become successful as a professional entertainer until he was pushing 40. He was a HS teacher in the NYC public school system for the first part of his adult life. After his career as an entertainer took off, he didn't forget his roots. He made regular appearances at NYC public school PTA meetings, delighting audiences with his humor interspersed with wisdom.
One day, Sam spoke to the PTA at the grammar school where my brother and I attended. My mom was there. From then on, Sam Levenson could do no wrong in her eyes. She disdained celebrities who "put on airs". Sam was folksy, very down to earth.
From then on my mom would dote on every word of his "Reader's Digest" articles. Over 50 years later, I can remember one of her favorites. He was writing about how he could still hear in his mind's ear many of the things his mother taught him. One example he gave was that when attending a party where guest towels are put out next to the bathroom sink, never start a clean towel (and make more work for the hostess). He mentioned that he had just attended a party like that. He closed the article with this one sentence final paragraph: "Ma, I didn't start a clean towel."
Mom, I did my best to set the record straight on Sam Levenson.

I had a subscription to Reader's Digest in the 6th grade. I thought it was very grown-up, having a magazine mailed to me. I enjoyed the vocabulary quiz, and- being a city slicker- chuckled at the folksy tone of the whole thing.

Pitcher Larry Bearnarth graduated from St. John's University in the middle of 1962 and was the Mets first "bonus baby" signing. He got off to a good start with the Mets top farm team by winning his first two games and then was pounded for the rest of the season, losing 13 in a row with a terrible 6.67 ERA. But when this episode of Password was airing, Larry had turned things around in the Florida Instructional League. His rapid improvement and an excellent spring training with the Mets saw him earn a spot on the major league roster. He had the most appearances of any Mets pitcher that year (58) and appeared to have a promising future.
But he may have been rushed physically. Arm problems dogged him the rest of his major league career. The Dodgers thought highly enough of him that they offered slugger Frank Howard for Bearnarth and Al Jackson. But the Mets turned down the offer. In the end they got next to nothing for him. After pitching in the Mets minor league system from 1967-70, they sold him to the Milwaukee Brewers for a small sum. (It worked out better for the Dodgers who got Claude Osteen from Washington for Frank Howard. He had a much better and longer career than either Jackson or Bearnarth.)
Larry had a much more highly regarded career as a pitching instructor for the Expos and Rockies organizations, both at the major league and minor league level.
He died of a heart attack on New Year's Eve, just before the start of Y2K. He was 58.

A correction to the contestant list: future major league pitcher is "Lawrence Bearnarth" and he was living in "Bellmore, NY". (Bellmore is one of a handful of neighborhoods that is partly in in NYC, in this case Queens, and partly in the suburbs, in this case Nassau County.) When Nassau was split off from Queens when modern NYC was formed in 1898, the border divided it (along with Floral Park and New Hyde Park, among others).

Allen Ludden was a fine, personable host. But he would often get confused on name pronunciations, the order of play, the score, and other details. A blooper moment evoked a puzzled look on Sam's face but the first losing contestant seems to take it in stride. In telling her what her consolation prize is, at 10:46 he calls her "Betty Young". That's the name of the next female contestant. The name of the first female contestant is Katherine Menzel.
For a few seconds when the second female contestant was introduced, I thought how amazing that they had two contestants on the show with the same name. Then I realized the error that Allen had made.

They mispronounced his name;it's Ber NARTH.Larry reached the Mets that year and lasted until 1971 with the Brewers. He was almost killed by an angry mob in Venezuela in 1965 after being misquoted.

    • @loissimmons6558
      @loissimmons6558 5 лет назад

According to Larry's SABR biography, his remarks were more misunderstood than misquoted. He sent a letter to sportswriter Maury Allen of the New York Post part of which included his remarks about the conditions in Venezuela. The remarks were intended to be humorous. When they were picked up and reprinted in Venezuela, the citizens of that country didn't see them that way.
Fortunately Larry was home in New York for Christmas when the uproar began. We don't know what the fans in Venezuela would have done to him because he wisely didn't go back there.
