I remember watching The Lucky 13 as a kid when the reception was good. I did not try carp until I moved to Iowa in the late 80s. They smoked it there and it tasted exactly like ham. You are very fortunate to have this video of your great uncle and thanks for sharing it.
Thanks Erik! Besides my Great Uncle, the guys in the boat are my dad, my little brother and my son -- we used to all go carp shooting -- a real family event -- glad you enjoyed it (and the carp!).
I was born in 53 and I can honestly say that the ol timers knew exactly what they were doing! Thank you so much for sharing, ! I would love to know what he knew about smoking various meats!
This is my Great Uncle Albert -- my Dad and Albert used to do all sorts of things like this and when Dave Carlson found out, he just felt he had to do a story on this -- I think kind of to save it for those of us who came after (I was born in 1950). So much has been lost generationally -- glad you enjoyed the video though.
How neat! I'm one of Helen's granddaughters (Cheryl's daughter). I'm a little too young to remember Uncle Albert very well, but, holy cow, do I see Helen in him here :)
"they'd think they was eatin' ham." My son had a friend over and at lunch the little boy said he didn't like fish. I shoveled some on his plate anyway. He stuck a fork into it and then said it was the best smoked turkey he ever had. I told him it was fish. He perked up and said "I like fish". What he was saying earlier was that he didn't like dry hard nasty fish stick like his mom usually made. (We didn't tell his mom.)
i once fed my buddy frog legs and told em they were chicken wings,,he had no clue and actually bought it flavor and texture wise till i told him what it really was and he got mad at me even though he liked them ,,i was laughing my ass off
I had to check this out and you're right, Albert did look like Woody Hayes -- interesting -- thanks for pointing that out and giving me a chuckle or two!

Me and my dad used to eat them bought at the grocery store called Easter’s in Charles City Iowa
Sounds like bubbles from trailer park boys

Wait till the end!! This guy is my hero. I aint fighting a fish and not getting nothing out of it, no matter what it is.!!!
this guy sounds like a grown up version of bubbles
I tried them back in the '70s, real hard to keep lit though!
I was going to say the same thing but you said it before I did LOL
My god, he looks like Woody Hayes!

I can't believe I am excited to eat a carp, tume to go fishing
Have fun!
My dad smoked carp, tasted a lot like smoked pork.
You can smoke just about anything
I tried to smoke a carp, but could never keep it lite.
Was it heavy?
I prefered tobaccos, when I smoked. I quit smoking.
We used to lay the carp on a cow pie, smoke it for 8 hours, and then eat the cow pie.
