    What a way to start the day Austin, a stunning piece of work, full of interest and a selection of locos that was a joy to watch. Well done to that driver for preventing that train slipping to a halt, and those whistles were something else...

      Many thanks Bob, we had an enjoyable few days up in Cumbria and didn't get too wet! I did think for one moment that Whillan Beck was going to slip to a stand before us but the driver did a fine job

    Excellent camera work and some great shots. It is now a long time since I went on this railway with my girl-friend who has now sadly passed away. Your video brought back happy memories of that day! Thanks for uploading.

    I've never visited (shamed). I've got an original whistle fitted to 'Katie' from the late John Wilkins collection, and repeated invites to visit. Hopefully 2021! My appetite is truly wetted. Great filming Austin (as usual). Cheers, del.

    Compelling viewing, Austin, with loads of variety and traffic-free locations. This really puts the railway into perspective with interesting gradients and beautiful surroundings. A nice bit of drama at 03:25, with even the dog apparently ready to get out and push. I'd love to go there and I guess it warrants at least a couple of days to see and film properly. Kind regards, Bob.

    • @acw71000

      Many thanks Bob, I regret not having panned for the shot of Whillan Beck slipping as the noise from her as she climbed to the summit was superb. A couple of days there would be ideal. We were lucky in that the locos changed over on the Sunday so all the shots of River Irt and River Esk were captured in one day. In normal times there is a more frequent service too

    Why do these locomotives have better whistles than normal British steam locomotives

    Does anyone remember these engines,the River ones, from 30 years ago.A few of them now seem to have whistles that are rather American loco sounding,im sure they didnt sound like that back then,maybe its just my imagination 🤔😁

    • @acw71000
      @acw71000  3 года назад +1

      I filmed River Irt when it was at the Liverpool International garden Festival in 1984 and having looked at the video again the whistle was possibly not as loud but that could be down to the quality of the microphone at the time. I wonder if the whistles have possibly been changed to be louder at the crossings

    • @indignationmeeting4488
      @indignationmeeting4488 3 года назад

      River Irt, Esk and Mite? I wasn't around 30 years ago but I'm pretty sure they changed the whistles along with adding radio telephones in 1976 (I think). They might have changed River Irt and Esk's after the workshop fire, but I'm not sure on that. They use different whistles to differentiate the engines at control at Ravenglass, and Whillan Beck and River Esk certainly have American whistles,. I'd say River Irt has an extremely British whistle, as does River Mite, and Norther Rock is somewhere in-between.
