  • "O Lord of Hosts" is a cherished hymn within the New Apostolic Church, known for its solemn and uplifting character. The hymn expresses deep reverence for God's omnipotence and providence, with lyrics that inspire humility and devotion:
"O Lord of hosts, who reigneth high in glory,
Before Thy throne we kneel and humbly pray.
Grant us Thy peace, o hear us still imploring,
That Thy great love may keep us this day."
These lines reflect a plea for divine peace and protection, coupled with a sense of humility before God’s throne. The second stanza highlights the work of the Holy Spirit:
"O Holy Ghost, the well-spring of our being.
Thine is the pow'r that bringeth all increase."
The melody for this hymn is set to the famous tune from Jean Sibelius's "Finlandia," a stirring composition that adds depth and majesty to the prayerful text.
The hymn also holds special significance as it was performed on November 8th, 1978, at the Good Hope Centre in Cape Town, where Chief Apostle Ernst Streckeisen was to conduct a divine service. Sadly, he passed away in the early hours of that morning following a stroke.
