And they sure did, resulting in "new girl" Alice sticking around for a triumphant nine season run that saw this new style sit-com become the standard bearer for the next generation of TV comedy.Alice is the story of Alice Hyatt (Linda Lavin), a recently widowed single mom who finds herself working as a waitress at an Arizona diner while caring for her pre-teen son, Tommy (Philip McKeon). The inimitable Vic Tayback plays Mel, the gruff owner of the diner, while Beth Howland and Polly Holliday play her co-workers, neurotic Vera and no-nonsense Flo. This 3-Disc, 24- Episode Collection collects the entire first season of the Bicentennial-era break-out hit, including the rarely seen pilot episode featuring Alfred Lutter from Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, the film inspiration for Alice. Guest stars include Batman's Adam West, Victor Buono, and Dark Shadow's Lara Parker.
I used to watch this show everyday after school. Along with What's Happening, Good Times, and Sanford & Son.
All of those were good shows
Taxi, Barney Miller, Welcome Back Kotter, Chico And The Man, Baretta, The Streets Of San Francisco- I grew up on, and loved, all of those old programs!
Nowadays, I refuse to allow a TV into my apartment, the programming is so bad....

If you have Antenna TV, they have a channel named "Antenna" and they show a whole myriad of those throw back shows. I'm actually watching Alice RIGHT NOW as I'm typing this message! Great nostalgia channel!! Since it's FREE, it's double the enjoyment!!!
Was a great show. There were so many great shows those days. Just a TV and rabbit ears antenna or roof antenna is all you needed to watch all those great shows and they were FREE! No costly cable or satellite TV.
The expression on Flo's face watching the film is priceless.

FLO was the show, leaving Linda Lavin Green, hence why FLo was more or less made so uncomfortable, she left.
Love this show. Hell, I love all the 70s and 80s shows. Better than most of the crap on tv today.

That’s why she got a spin-off.. Season 1 was a success and they just gave up on it. I mean 24.4M views and just because of timeslot change killed it. They should’ve tried a different slot

This was my favorite show as a child. I loved Vera.
Christi Nash Vera was my favorite on "Alice." My favorite episode was when Vera found the baby at the laundromat and decided she wanted to adopt the baby but then the baby's young teenage mother was found. Such a sweet (and sad) episode. 🌼

The 1st season was the absolute best
Alice is on Antenna TV channel.So far it's showing the ones with Jolene.When it was first put on that channel, it showed the eps with Flo.Flo was the heart of the show...it really formed around her.I used to watch Flo's show, but it wasn't as funny without the regular cast.They all sorta worked together to create the comedy.Her show didn't last long, I think only one season.

Sometimes a breakout character needs to remain among her other actors in
the series.....it's tough when you go it alone.....it's not the same.
Flo was a strong, unique, funny character but I feel her solo series
didn't hold up well. Others who went solo & did not succeed were
Sally Struthers "Gloria" from All In The Family, "Checking Out" with
Marla Gibbs (She returned toThe Jeffersons), "One In A Million" with
Shirley Hemphill (What's Happening). More successful were:
Bea Arthur - "Maude" from All In the Family
Esther Rolle - "Good Times" - from Maude
Charlotte Rae - "Facts Of Life" spun off from Different Strokes
Valerie Harper - "Rhoda" from Mary Tyler Moore
Robin Williams - "Mork & MIndy" spun off from Happy Days
These shows did well due to the new supporting characters/situations being interesting

When Flo left, the show definitely went downhill, and the plots became rather silly.

Loved this show as a kid. Maybe I didn't understand all nuances as a kid, but 45+ years on, many of the same issues are as relevant today in the USA as they were 45+ years ago. Why haven't we evolved?
In real life, Linda Lavin was married from 1969 - 1981 to Ron Liebman....Ron Liebman played Rachel Green's father on "Friends." (Liebman passed away in Dec 2019 at the age of 82, from pneumonia complications.)
It's funny seeing Angelique form Dark Shadows (Lara Parker) and Batman (Adam West) in an episode together.
Alice was one of TVs all-time greatest shows, It almost gets forgotten among all the great TV shows in history, But I think Alice is one of TVs all-time greatest shows!

Mel was so thin in the first season, after that, not so much. Five years after the show ended, Mel died of a massive heart attack.
I used to rush home from school & watch this. I'd be sad once the episode was over.

It has been said that Linda Lavin is a difficult person with whom to work. Any truth to the rumor that she was more than glad to see Polly Holliday leave the show, as Linda was feeling upstaged by her?
Linda Lavin totally wanted her off the show. That's why Polly Holliday and her character were spun off onto her own tv series. The network wanted to keep her employed because she was such a popular character on Alice. Unfortunately, Flo didn't do so well in the ratings as a solo act and the network cancelled it.
Lavin finally got her 15 minutes of fame then Flo took the spotlight. People love characters they can relate to. Flo was down home, real as they come, didn’t care what people thought about her.

Polly Holiday as Flo was the Fonzie of the show. Too bad Linda Lavin couldn’t handle it and created drama and Polly ended up doing a lame spin-off and then they got all these copy cat actresses to try to fill the void.

Mel, kiss my grits! Flo, played by Polly Holliday, left 'Alice' to star in her own sitcom, which was canceled after only one or two seasons. Flo was the heart and soul of the show. Allegedly, Linda Lavin was difficult with her co-stars, Holliday especially. So, she left the series to venture out on her own. Admittedly, her spin-off lacked the essence of 'Alice' and quite frankly, Holliday never really cared for her character, Flo, or her famous quip, "Kiss my grits!" I'm watching Flo's goodbye episode when she leaves for a hostess job in Houston - such good vibes for me and such a great show.

i agree with you Markissable...but I believe that this decision was made also of the production, because the character of Flo was about to become more cute and popular than Alice, so that people preferred a lot more flo than Alice ... they had to make the character of Alice at the top, because he was the obvious protagonist of the series ----flo remained until the middle of the fourth season, then the series have become especially the last series more boring and less interesting, even the character of mel was off .. had lost its grit, the only one that remained in the roadway was vera

Phil C Well I heard there was definitely inner fighting on the set between the two, so they had to get Polly her own show..... but it was terrible! And Alice was never the same without the Flo character either...

Was first called Mel's Diner. Then Alice took over. Loved this show. I bet they don't teach sex education in schools anymore...😆 They did when i was in 4th grade...😆😆 Actually there is a Mel's Diner in Arkansas.. I think it's actually a chain of them.

Reminds me of the episode of Freaks and Geeks where Sam, Neil and Bill watch a porn movie in Neil’s basement. No part of the film is ever shown, but their expressions and comments while watching are classic.
