  • This video was made in 1992 by the late Derek Haynes of March. As Derek has since passed away and Nene Video productions no longer exist, I'm sure that he would be very pleased to have this video uploaded to the internet so people can still watch it. This is a tribute to him, the line itself (how useful would it be now?) and the men who worked it. The video isn't great quality but its of it's time and I think that the subject matter more than makes up for this.
P.S. Look out for the ghost at Holbeach Drove level crossing. You need to look at the bottom of the screen under the gatehouse sign. You can make your own mind up on that and may not believe in these things, but I witnessed first hand the alarm, upset and ill feeling it caused for some level headed old railwayman who first viewed the footage in 1992. They all recognised the ghost who used to be a crossing keeper and got killed by a train there in the late 1950s! No one saw anything on the day of filming, it was only afterwards that it was noticed. The BBC were interested in the footage at the time too.

The crossing keeper was Walter Clark who was killed on Wednesday 10th December 1958 at Holbeach Drove.

Goodness me I was once respocible for Spalding station from 2006 I remember very well Spalding as a full multiple platformed station from 1975 always came down as a kid for the flower show
Ironically not for the flowers but for the variety of locomotives & special trains
I have travelled over this rail line featured behind 40081 hauling a rake of MK1s special train (Joint liner special) it was called by BR March Spalding joint line closure
    40081 with headboard
    What Memories
Any Guesses to which avoiding line closed at the same time as the Marsh To Spalding rail line

hi there. Hope you don't mind but we've been discussing the ghost on your video. If you have any more details or background information to it, perhaps you can pop along and answer a few questions
