Thanks for the idea! Here are the earplugs I use:

They do impact sound quality somewhat, but are much better sounding than normal earplugs.

I found your channel on a whim yesterday checking out amateur radio content.. your video on how the FCC caught you when you were a kid was so intriguing to me I subscribed

I also found you through the pirate radio video. I subbed due to your absolute lack of hyperbole and everything you say is just dead set fact. I don't need gloss if the content is informative.

The quality of your audio is absolutely STELLAR, just crazy good in every possible way!! 👍 After 50++ years of tinkering with mixing boards, playing in bands, studio recording, living and learning everything I can about decibels, audio technology, techniques, microphones, pre/post processing, acoustic environments, patterns, grey hair, etc…I must tell you that I am totally amazed with the clarity, tonality, and well-adjusted dynamics of your audio capture. To my ears your sound is vivid, natural, and has a human-presence that is lightyears above 99.9% of YT creators. There are MANY reasons I am a new sub to your channel, but your audio is going to keep me here forever Barry, outstanding! Even your LAV mics in outdoor settings are stunningly crisp and clear! Congrats on milestone of 5k subs, and thank you for all the advice, tips, tricks. Just found your channel today so I have 5 years of vids to catch up on 😆 and totally looking forward to it!

      Hey Thanks!
Yeah, I know it's important to have clear audio if you don't want to chase away viewers. I think a lot of people will even tolerate so-so video if the sound is clear.
The audio is actually heavily processed with a lot of compression. It's a punchy loud "podcast" style mix. The secret sauce is in the careful choosing of the compression timing constants so it doesn't sound as processed as it really is. Sometimes I do struggle getting the background noise floor low enough, I have issues with that in my space. I often do different techniques and use different mics on videos, and some videos turn out a little better than others. I like to mix it up and use different stuff all the time, I probably should settle down with a setup that works well, but what fun is that?
Haha, most of my outdoor lav mic videos were done with a $3 Panasonic mic capsule I soldered on a cable. Nothing fancy there. Just a little post-processing soundguy magic.
      Thanks again!

I had never heard of your channel until your pirate radio station video turned up in my feed. I see I'm not the only one either, since that video has 32K views, while most of your other videos have view counts in the hundreds. That's the one that's going to put you on the map! A techie/engineer type can spot another one pretty easily, usually. Your hair and face make it easy to spot, and it conveys "this guy knows what he's talking about". I like the no-nonsense approach. No fancy introduction to have to sit through, no distracting backgrounds with the obligatory guitar, no memes or stock footage interjected every minute (those are the worst). Just a calm delivery, talking about the subject at hand. Kudos!

I subscribed because of your recent story about your AM and FM pirate radio station you had as a teen. We are of an age, Barry...my dad was an electrical engineer too, and the control operator of the local amateur radio repeater station close to our family home, 146.61 Mhz... I was the monkey on that damn 70' 2 meter beam at home, and many hours spent at the repeater shack too! I was a phone phreaker who was able to parlay that into a job at Bell Atlantic as a core tech at 22, a long time ago. I'm on my third engineering discipline now... I suspect you've had about as non-linear a career as I have had, most likely never to be duplicated today. Please carry on with the channel...

Always a pleasure Barry. A couple of standout videos for me are your exposé on good egg vs bad eggs and to bridge an amp or not. The bridging an amp video was great as it was so well explained and really just clicked in my brain. I think it’s wise to pause once in awhile and enjoy our successes like you are doing, with a learning spin on it too. Thanks for the humble nature and modesty that you work with, it’s refreshing. Keep up the good work.

I appreciate that! I think 'who out there wants to hear about audio and farming', and I wonder how many subscribers are we going to lose with this oddball video. I know I really should focus on a particular topic, but I'm just interested in so many things.
But, it looks like this channel is made for you. Haha.
