First time my father listened that song he wondered the meaning of the lyrics and I translated to him and he loved them a lot. Now I am listening that epic song after I lost him a week ago. Rest in peace my lovely dad and my best friend. You will never be forgotten.

It's definitely a song about regrets, the regrets we don't end up saying the things we need to say to the persons we love before they leave forever. Dido's voice then renders the song more magically sorrowful.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a song that encapsulates grief as much as this does.
The reality of losing someone and then going through the bereavement ritual: time off work, funeral arrangements, sympathies from your friends, family, and colleagues etc. But then one day you’re back at work, the outpouring of sympathy stops, and you’re back to living life again, but in a world that moves on without them.
You never really stop grieving, you just learn to live with it.
I love how she captures true sadness. It's not in-your-face, it's more like a slow-burn. A rare type of song. Me likey.

+Daniel Duarte So true. Since it came out, i listen and listen to it and never get tire. Time after, i discovered that most of the songs of this album are about her father, who passed away, and the similitude of her relationship with her father in these songs with mine and my dad (who passed away one year after he launched the album), knocked me down for a while. Apart of this sentences, musically, my favorite album ever.

+Jake Bsn When the album was released she had artists from around the world to make a music video for every song on the album as a promo. Don't believe in love has a "proper" music video since it was a single release. These other clips were just promos.
Dido and the record company commissioned several movie directors, from all over the world (UK, Brazil, India, USA, etc), to make short films for all the Safe Trip Home songs. The whole album is conceptual (about the deceased Dido's father and their relationship) For Dido, the pain of her grief and loss was so intense that she opted not to tour in support of the album due to her difficulties with performing the material. This is the same reason why she opted to not appear on the videos. Later, against her will, two tracks from Safe Trip Home received more usual videos, with her appearence, but at that time, these short films were very known as a visual project, so this "usual" videos were little seen and she really had nothing to promote them, thinking the short films were much more well succeed, artistically speaking

The same exact thing happened to me 12 years ago I broke up with the love of my life because I was young and didn’t know that God could take someone from us in a blink of an eye . I wanted to call the love of my life the day before the day he passed I wanted to tell him that I missed him and I really really loved him and I was sorry for being such a bitch . My pride wouldn’t let me pick up that phone and call. I often wonder if he would still be here today so many things have happened to me since he passed some good some bad but I clearly have so much regret I wish I would of called him I wish I would of been there for him when he needed me the most I wish I could of told him he wasn’t alone that I was here. Today I heard that someone who was good friends with my siblings was murdered last night while attempting to stop a robbery. Some girl was being mugged at knife point and this guy got in the way, stopped the robber and he took it out on him, stabbing him in the chest several times. The murderer ran away and has not been detained. I just came back to this video to remember him, because it's true:

I think we all interpret her lyrics differently, like any good writer (not songwriter, just any good writer does.) I never thought of these lyrics in the way that you see them. I took it more literally. I have friends that went out on a boat and never came back. I myself have gone out on a boat or surfboard and almost didn't come back. That Nazare area in Portugal is also famous for 70ft waves surfers risk. Thank you for sharing your story.
@@markzenzo6206 Well I've been a fan since her first album and she does talk a lot about the meaning of her songs. I usually stick to her explanations and know this one was written about her father's passing and how she felt guilty about not telling him how much he meant to her. But this recent tragedy made me think of this song and these words I quoted rang particularly true. Because my friend or someone you know dies, won't be honored like royalty normally will be; schools, businesses will stay open, it will be announced on TV but flags won't be lowered. Life will carry on when one of us average citizens die. But the hole that a loved one leaves will take a long time to heal, even though the world won't stop to mourn the loss as much as we would want it to. I think that's how I relate to DIdo's pain.
@@zimzimzalabim I like your answer. It is difficult to comment on a song by itself, versus the song with an official video. A video of a song can transform how I imagine the song tremendously. If I were to only listen to the song with headphones at 3am, with no visuals, I would interpret the lyrics probably quite differently. I didn't know the back story about her dad. That is hauntingly too close to home for me. I didn't speak to my dad for 7 years, and then he all of the sudden died. Thank you for giving me some insight. Mark
I have another theory about some of the lyrics. I am not a woman, so I really have to pull all of my imagination into this, but there is one thing I think women have going on in their head, especially who have boys: they can only do the best for them as they can, as children, but finally have to let them leave, to fight wars, battle enemies, and just do their thing. I think that women have an instinctive part to them that some of their boys will die.
