The B Button mapping actually makes a lot of sense. The Bounce attack is mapped to the B Button because "Bounce" starts with the letter "B" Same thing goes for: - Bin Dash - Blight Dash - Bomersault - Bick Up It's quite intuitive when you think about it
Funny thing about that, this is the same Sonic Team that worked on most of PSO's development at the EXACT SAME TIME. Guess what they developed for PSO early on? The action circle, a grouping of simple and easy to discern icons on hexagons with borders color matched to the buttons all of which were dynamically reconfigurable. They literally developed the solution they needed for PSO at the exact time they also needed it for SA2, they just... didn't implement it in SA2 for whatever reason.

Yes, the guy has some sort of obsession with this stort of control scheme even when it's obviously not the best. I fixed it. The controls are good now.", and the controls actually change in game. I need more sassy Omochao in my life. I love him.
Distorted Travesty does a lot of meta stuff like that. Its a 2D platformer mixed with an RPG (at no point is one over simplified to accomodate the other) alongside...other things. I heard the 3rd game is better, but I've yet to play that one yet...

The "one-button game" mentality in the classic games doesn't exactly apply well in 3D when you give the characters multiple abilities. At least they got better at this in the games after.
A little bit, but IIRC Unleashed was still the first game to bind light dash to a separate button than the general action button. So, 7 years after SA2.
Shadow the Hedgehog didn't technically have its own button for light speed dash, but light speed dash was just about the only thing the X button did in midair. Heroes and 06 to either side of Shadow on the release timeline weren't as good about that.

If light dash was put on Y, that would have solved 90% of the issues. Almost every place where the wrong action happens is because of missing a light dash in my experience.
There is a workaround to somewhat mitigate this issue: homing attacking forward before the rings will put you in a falling state, during which the Bounce Attack isn't available to use, hence the Light Speed Dash will be the only option.
Somersault and Spin-dash on the same button makes sense. Even the bounce attack does, since it's in the air. It's the Light Speed Dash that ruins everything. Should've been on X. (As well as the other context sensitive inputs)
Balan Wonderworld had the same issue but instead of the same button doing everything, every button does one action and even then it depends on what ability you have. Figures as Yuji Naka had a big hand on both games, dude just likes making everything more complicated for no reason.

I mean, Sonic Adventure 2 definitely worked, but that was despite this and the Bounce/Light Dash issue is definitely a valid concern. Especially when you get a Magnetic Shield and the ring you initially were going to use to Light Dash gets pulled into you so instead you end up Bouncing and falling into a bottomless pit. Balan Wonderworld on the other hand, that was a fuckup of epic proportions. Primarily due to everything being mapped to the B Button.

The pain of bounce attacking when you wanna do a light speed dash above some god forsaken bottomless pit.. Ideal controls for me would be X is spin dash, Y is LS dash, B keeps the somersault and bounce attack. Whistling and pick up is context sensitive and mapped to Y
As much as I freaking love this game, the mid-air Light Dash getting replaced with a Bounce To Your Doom is an actual problem. Through years of practice, I have gained an intuitive understanding of exactly how to get the B Button to do *exactly* what I want, at all times. EXCEPT THAT ONE.

Not gonna lie, I fucking hate it when I'm trying to A Rank a level with Sonic and bounce near a trail of rings instead of doing the wanted action.

Maybe this is what inspired Yuji's Naka's ambitious control scheme philosophy for Balan Wonderworld. It would explain a lot.

Kirby Air Ride had all of its buttons do the same thing, but that game worked because your options are already very limited. This doesn't.
I mean, Sonic Adventure 2 definitely worked, but that was despite this and the Bounce/Light Dash issue is definitely a valid concern. Especially when you get a Magnetic Shield and the ring you initially were going to use to Light Dash gets pulled into you so instead you end up Bouncing and falling into a bottomless pit.
Balan Wonderworld on the other hand, that was a fuckup of epic proportions. Primarily due to everything being mapped to the B Button.
Oh god is that why the one button gameplay was a thing in Balan Wonderworld?
In the developer's defense. The B button is used mostly for Attack/Execute while the A button is just for jump/interaction iirc 😅

The pain of bounce attacking when you wanna do a light speed dash above some god forsaken bottomless pit.. Ideal controls for me would be X is spin dash, Y is LS dash, B keeps the somersault and bounce attack. Whistling and pick up is context sensitive and mapped to Y
You could also map stuff to the D-pad, which goes entirely unused in SA2.
Finally, someone gets the fact that these controls make absolutely no snese
SA2 is like a rhythm game where all you do is press B button at the right time and win.
sa2 is the kind if game to bind both sprint and walk to B button
As much as I freaking love this game, the mid-air Light Dash getting replaced with a Bounce To Your Doom is an actual problem.
Through years of practice, I have gained an intuitive understanding of exactly how to get the B Button to do *exactly* what I want, at all times. EXCEPT THAT ONE.
