Honestly this might be my favorite version of the story. I think leaving Ramona to face her Exes since…I mean they’re HER exes, was an amazing choice and seeing them get extra moments to flourish as characters was fun as hell. Also I think Bryan Lee O’Malley actually confirmed the future timeline wasn’t actually a sequel to the comic or movie and is technically it’s own continuity that just happens to follow similar beats

The anime was basically if UBW was about romance instead of his ideals. Tiny changes to the present timeline and the big fight is about changing the future to not lead to the bad end he saw himself.
I watched the show without knowing much about Scott Pilgrim other than the fighting of the exes from the movies. I wasn't expecting them to actually remove the main character for half of the show. At the end, I loved it. Loved it so much I binged the comics the day after I finished watching the show. And then rewatched it again with the Jp dub.

I think the most off-putting thing, and this is a grievance that most people have, is the lack of Scott within his own story. In fact, there is a noticeable tone of cynicism or even malice towards Scott within this series from the other characters who are supposed to be his friends and family. Granted, in the comics, everyone in his life bemoaned him for his immaturity, obliviousness, and free-loading nature, but there was always a sense that they cared about him, enjoyed his company, and were willing to help him out as he struggled to make the leap from adolescence to adulthood. In the series, not only was everyone elated that he was presumed dead, but all of their lives were better off without him. The only characters who were upset over his death were Knives and Ramona - the characters who knew him the least. That didn't sit right with me the whole time watching.

This is an evident part of the original comic and even the movie though? Like he's kind of an unselfaware douche in the comic- him realizing that is like- his whole arc. I really loved the story, his IF-type storytelling, and the spin Brian gave on the story, born from the maturity he gained from the time passed by the end of the series. One of the elements i liked the most was the nuanced way they rappresented the conflict between older Scott and Ramona in the future.
Yeah, Scott probably did make a mess of things in their marriage, and a lot of his suffering and grief was self-imposed, but part of that was caused by Ramona distancing herself fom Him and her problems, and falling back in her habits.
She didn't say to him that she still loved him and that separation wasn't meant to be a divorce, making Scott think that all his efforts on being a better person and having a good relationship for himself and her lover were wasted, and making him having a worst break up fallout that the one he had with Envy.
She expected him to make all the work to resolve their relationship problems, when the faults were shared between them. Damn, she didn't visit Scott for the 10 years he spent in his old appartment, making him go even more batshit crazy in the meantime.
Infact, Older Scott's rage deflates almost instantly when Ramona tells him that they could have made their relationship work again in the past, and when Ramona rejects his proposal to get back together, he accepts it, bitterly, but he accepts it.
Their problems were caused by terrible misundestandings from both parts. And their resolution relied in both of them trying to face their problems together, not apart form each other.

I hope not. It sort of robs the book of it's ending... which is currently the best version of the story we have so far with both Scott AND Ramona dealing with their issues in order to fight side by side with one another. Thus far the film sidelined Ramona too much to focus on Scott (and angling for a Knives ending that the comics already warned us would be 'bad for everyone') while this anime (Currently) sidelines Scott too much for Ramona's development, and only the book does BOTH at the same time with a particularly good sense of maturity... I honestly can't see how THIS timeline could POSSIBLY result in any better result since if older Scott comes from the timeline where he actually went through a character arc and learned lessons... what hope does he have in this timeline where he hasn't done ANY growing at all? Obviously a second season could really hone in on this and with the right direction could really hone in on showcasing Scott and Ramona TOGETHER, conquering their issues to be worthy of each other, but at this exact moment, while Ramona has dealt with her primary fault, Scott's still a newborn babe of issues.

My problem with this addition to the series is that it didn’t necessarily add character development to the series, it just replaces the development other characters would have normally gotten. Steven is still exactly the same and doesnt get his boyfriend, Envy Adams doesn’t go through her arc, Kims reconciliation with Scott doesnt happen, Gideon is effectively completely rewritten as a character, and Lisa STILL ISNT THERE for some reason. Ramona doesn’t even actually apologize for her behavior to anyone except Roxie, every other Evil Ex barely interacts with her in any meaningful way outside of Lucas Lee. The whole thing felt like side content they could have stacked ONTO the original to elevate it, but on its own/as an AU, it just falls flat. Like instead of eating Mac and Cheese, you just ate the shredded cheese by itself.
EDIT: It also doesn’t make sense from a viewer/fan perspective to have a Scott that doesn’t learn from his mistakes be the antagonist. Every other version of Scott genuinely deals with his issues by gaining the power of self respect/understanding and the confrontation with Nega-Scott. The idea that either A. This isn’t either of those Scotts makes me question why Im supposed to care for him or B. It IS one of those Scotts and his other arcs amounted to nothing. Scott doesn’t even solve that issue in this one. He just fights him, he gets sent back to the future, and we’re supposed to believe that he learned despite having an even worse arc in this one than the other adaptations. I just don’t get the point.

At this point I've come to appreciate how every single iteration of the story: The song, the comic, the film, the video game and now the TV series kind of goes a completely different way with the whole thing and interprets the characters differently to the point where I no longer think there is a definitive version of any character. I remember one of the things that bugged me about the film is that they didn't do Julie Powers justice but here she gets tons of screen time and she's kind of completely different from the comics. I got the impression towards the end that Julie was actually a pretty nice person but she's the only person who doesn't let Scott's bs slide but here she just seems to be kind of evil so I don't know, maybe I was wrong.

I just wish we got an actual adaptation. I don’t like that people are saying that people shouldn’t complain because of the comic and movie existing. I wanted to see events throughout the comic be animated and have things be more complex and thorough and not have to cut out so much stuff like the movie did. Then we got a bait and switch after getting bombarded with advertisements about the show being about Scott when it’s instead about Ramona. Then you have future Scott regress and seemingly forget all he’s learned to being a better person in the comics over a misunderstanding of all things. I’ll just ignore whatever the connections the movie has to this and pretend that it’s separate. It’s the best I’m gonna get now. This series, while good overall, was just a big “what could’ve been” for me. I’m tired of this incessant need to massively change things for the sake of it. Scott didn’t need to “take off” in order for the supporting cast to have more development. The comic being the way it was with how it treated characters was just due to bad writing. Maybe if this were 13 episodes and Netflix would stop making its shows shorter and shorter the creator could afford Scott being there I guess idk. I think that could be a factor. Season 2 maybe?

as a fan of both the comics and the movie and now the anime, i love how none of the adaptations are a perfect replica of the comics, each piece of media feels almost like its own entity while still maintaining that scott pilgrim charm. exploring different things in each makes them feel like they actually have a purpose (rather than just being a cash grab like many sequels and live action movies now a days) it’s pretty cool too cuz it’s like we’re slowly getting our own scott pilgrim multiverse! and i love that with the anime we are able to see alternate ideas from the creator that r so new and fresh that we’d never get to see otherwise! as a longtime fan it feels like an even better treat than just an anime covering all the beats of the og-i just love love seeing the universe expanding and growing! it makes me so excited about what else the future has in store for scott pilgrim!!

I actually interpreted the show to be a spiritual sequel the comics and not the film, for several reasons.
Although there are a lot of similarities and call backs to the film, I think first and for most the Older Scott we meet in episode 7 acts a lot more like comic Scott than movie Scott. He still has that foolish confidence that the movie Scott didn’t really have in my opinion.
And in the virtual reality scene, Regular Scott says “Is that our ex? Do we have to confront our past or something? That sounds terrible.” And Older Scott replies “I’m telling you the whole thing was terrible” which I don’t think applies much the movies events, which for the most part was just one eventful week for Scott. I think he’s experiences of reconciling with Envy, The Nega Scott, Lisa, and all the events in the comics would be garner that kind of reaction.
And later in the episode, younger Scott asks Older Scott to tell him what they did wrong so he can do better, and Older Scott remarks “You immediately assume I messed up?!” I interpreted that as Scott being frustrated with still being perceived as in the wrong even after all the changes he’s made.
I think it’s a very human reaction to feel as though all your efforts of self improvement were for nothing. And I’m sure from Scott was frustrated as Ramona at the pointed didn’t actual change like the anime Ramona did, so interpreted it as her doing what she always does.
Granted Scott did massively over react, but that’s normal for Scott and people in general. I viewed Scott’s arc in the anime to be a succession to his arc in the comics of being a cautionary tale that even if you overcome your demons, you can still fall back into toxic behaviors

I watched this with a good friend of mine who's a huge fan of the comics, I've only seen the movie and know a few things about the comic thanks to her. While I was mostly on board with it, in great part thanks to the amazing artstyle and animation, as well as just how fun the show was in general, she felt a bit conflicted, loving a LOT of stuff but not being 100% on board with everything. It was a cool watch though, hope we get more just so that we can see more of this artstyle and animation.

I really, really wanted to like this show, but the further into it I got the more disappointed I became. I think I was really looking forward to seeing more of Scott and Ramona actually being in a relationship and how it helps them grow past their flaws to become better individuals, even with all the messiness. I was also never sold on Scott in the live-action version and immediately fell in love with the animation's Scott, making it such a let down when he is whisked away in episode one. To me, this also hurt Ramona's character - why is she so hooked on this guy she went on one date with when she is someone who routinely leaves people when it starts to get real? He behavior is of a Romana who has already gone through her character development, which doesn't make sense in this version of the story.
I think this video's point about how this is a response to the movie Scott who has not gone through the growth of comic Scott has softened some of my initial bitterness though, as the idea of Scott just growing up to be a obsessive man-child felt so mean-spirited to me. It's a helpful point of view and maybe I'll be able to watch it again in the future with that perspective in mind and maybe like it. But right now, I can at least say for certain that the production itself is incredible: I loved the animation, the music, the action choreography, voice performances and sound effects -- all of it was awesome. I even like how the mouth-flaps didn't always match with what they were saying, reminding me of old anime dubs. It was a good touch.
But the story... not for me.

I read the comics, and saw the movie. I did NOT like the anime. I didn’t necessarily hate it, I just didnt like it. I found a lot of the stuff stagnant, and i think it took away from some of the momentum that I appreciated in the old one. Also found Older Scott to be corny, and felt empty and bored watching the show without Scott in it. Scott was the glue that got all the characters we see to meet and hang together basically so it just felt empty and weird to me. The animation was nice, the humor was cute, and the cast was great but it just wasn’t what I asked for. I can see why people like it, but I dont think it’s unreasonable to dislike it either as a fan of the movie and comic adaptations. Im glad Scott pilgrim is still being given attention at least and getting love but I would’ve appreciated something else a whole lot more personally.

I really enjoy the ending. My only real issues are that Envy and Kim don't really end up being much of a character outside of the books and the Gideon Julie relationship just seems like a bland wouldn't it be funny if these two were together without much reasoning or desire to explore them.

He thought the space she needed was a divorce. So his dumbass BECAME a evil ex. It's hilarious and poetic. It's a sweet ass semi-sequel. The evil exes were 1 dimensional jerks, and Ramona was always sort of a bitch to them growing up. This is a really cool way to promote growth and show depth of all the characters and give them room to be humans. Instead of pissed off people who get murdered. I loved the show. Big FLCL comparisons, with the wacky characters and insane fight sequences, along with it being a highly stylized study of a single character (Ramona) makes this so so good. As FLCL is my favorite show, the fact I wasn't around for its initial airing always makes me sad. But now it's like I get to experience the joy other people got back then with this show. It's also great to see such a public Japanese and American crossover. I think this one will age really well. It has all the hallmarks of a cult classic. I'm glad they did something new instead of a full on adaption. Wallace is my favorite variation of his character so far. Lots of feelings about this, but the short of it is that I love this, and I'm glad it exists.

I think I was most disappointed since it was not an adaptation, but felt more like an alternative new game plus timeline in Nier. Then it just went to explore and change character areas on characters that got less screen time in the movie. I really disliked the episode of them making the movie as it felt like a parody than retelling or developing the story and universe of Scott more. While it was certainly nice to see Ramona take a more active role in the story, I did not feel like she had enough charisma to carry the show with her cold delivery. While I am happy an animated Scott Pilgrim exists, I am already looking to get the graphic novels to understand the real story.

Yes, it took me until like episode 3 to realize they weren't all the same story, but I enjoyed the story that played out nonetheless. Speaking as someone who read around 15-16 chapter of the comic and seen the movie 2 or 3 times this show I feel has a good first half and meh second half. The first half gives us an interesting new dyamic to look at for these characters (Lucas and Roxy especially) and Ramona trying to reconcile with her exes is great, but the second half feels like more stuff happen that Ramona is in the background of. Episode 5 drops the reconcile aspect and makes some decent joke, but I feel become a bad way to characterize Todd leaving him a mess. Episode 6 is really just the fun opening and then a drag out with Gideon behavior change (which is fine), context on the twins backstory and then the mystery is solved poof, it honestly not that good imo. Episode 7 is just speedrunning Scott to be developed which doesn't feel earned and has a hook mystery which you can eaisly figure out. Episode 8 is fine with an epic battle, but I feel the way Future Scott is handled doesn't solve the problem which the previous episode brought up. The whole aspect of Ramona not trying to run away from her past feels so contradictory when she solves the Future Scott problem by poofing him away and instead combing with pass Ramona to help a Scott who hasn't gone dark side. Again I think there could have been a decent what if, but I can't call it great due to the condense series second half.

Scott Pilgrim is one of my favorite things of all time, after watching the movie I moved to toronto to study for a bit and I was just 15, the impact this series has had in me as a whole is massive and even though I was sad about not having an actual adaptation of the comic (Lisa fans will never recover) I am so happy to have scott takes off since it gives me more of something I really wanted and that is just to get to see more of scott pilgrim characters outside of scott since he has already been explored twice, and having a critic of movie scott since he really never learned his lesson, having Ramona also get more development was great since she should always have been the one that fixed things with her exes.
I do dislike the whole "Sparks" since I hate that depiction of Love in Media but I understand it was due to time and also feel like if you are new to scott pilgrim and see this series the enjoyment you would get is greatly diminished.

Still a bait and switch. Glad their is a part of the audience that enjoys, yet their is no denying that there is also a segment that feels cheated or lied to about this being a proper adaption of the source material. This being some extention of the live action was such a weird choice, when the easiest path was to do follow the source and add some character development around the exes and Ramona. This would have lead to new audience going back to the source material, the established audience being happy and sharing with their buds and other, merchandise sales rise, all is good in the neighborhood, like they wizards in Japan do with their comic tales moving to other mediums. But this is what we got, so be it.

Their is possessive. "That is their cat"
There is locative. "It's over there"
      They're is a conjunction "They're my friends"
      Hope this helps

I was pleasantly surprised by the anime. Scott Pilgrim is my favorite comic series and I was excited to see a more faithful adaptation of it but I'm really glad they did something new. Even Older Scott is the Scott from the comic years after the series ends so they turned the anime into a sequel in an interesting way. I like the idea that Scott and Ramona's character arcs span two different timelines
