Spot on, Ben! I grew up in New Jersey but I remember the grittiness of the city when I was a kid. I've lived in Brooklyn for 9 years now and it's disheartening seeing how many family-owned delis and restaurants are being pushed out by trendy, overpriced cafes both in BK and Manhattan. It's tough because even though the city is safer, but it's definitely losing some culture.
On top of that, it seems like everyone I work with came here from somewhere else (like the midwest, Florida and California) and only stay for a few years before moving back to where they grew up. Many agree to pay those exorbitant rent prices because they figure "Eh, I'll only be here for a year or two." Makes it harder for people who plan to stay here permanently to afford a place!

I love how his idea of NYC includes only Manhattan. If you had some sense you'd hop on a train, bridge, or ferry and discover that there are 4 other boros where the grit and romance of old NY is still alive. You know, those places where the people who drive your cabs and work the counters where you get your morning coffee live.
