- Riding the infamous Dovers, which are affectionately named "Chewbacca" and "Chewbacca Jr." There are many imitators out there, but these two are the two and only two "Chewbaccas". Unfortunately, these soldiers only have a year and change left in service, as plans for the new Roosevelt Field forecast brand-new elevators.

It's been 10 years since this was posted! Miss these elevators so much. I wish they would have at least put scenic elevators again.
I miss these things. I loved the lanterns, the full glass design and the motor. Now some stupid kone MRL takes over. I wish there could have been some kind of way to keep the structure of these things
I really love the motor on the left elevator and I wish I could see these elevators, but it’s sad to see these elevators go. I really love the lanterns, too.
My first two comments will turn 3 years old tomorrow. This just came up on my recommendations on Jun 20, 2019. I had completely forgotten about these elevators for like 3 years and then it came up on my recommendations and then I remembered them.

I saw a Montgomery with a motor that sounded just like chewy, but way louder! I mean, my ears were ringing for a week, that's how loud it was.
I was on the last ride before it was shut down for good on the night of Sept 17th, 2015.
These were only 23 years old, and they completely destroyed them.

Those were called the "Feature Elevators"
The machine rooms would overheat on weekends and people constantly got stuck inside.
Do you work in the mall? And also, I take it that's why these were ripped out?
It’s because the motor room is so far away from the elevator. Also they leaked oil from the valves on the machine and from the hydraulic cylinder because of the amount of pressure it took to push the cylinder up.
One time at a mall around here the machine room caught on fire and the mall filled with smoke.
Chewy Jr.'s motor got replaced due to fire. The machine room could've been nearer to the pistons or there should be more powerful motors

You may not believe me but I found a pair of Otis Series 1's with Chewbacca motors. Not as loud but both got the same pitch sound.

All thx to SIMON for taking down the famous Chewbacca Dover. I highly doubt that SIMON will ever touch a Dover controller and scrap it so that KONE will replace it

They we're leaking from oil and had to go. Not to mention the fact that the controllers has serious issues.

Unfortunately, these elevators had to go because they were in very bad shape and they very BADLY leaking oil.

@@jamesackley1058 The motors were horribly leaking oil. These elevators failed inspection the last time Simon had them inspected, and were condemned as a result. Not to mention they had SERIOUS controller issues.

I remember that mall the Roosevelt field mall it is near 333 citi office tower and Hurricane grill & wings and Mcdonalds!
That motor was awesome, as well as the old neon lanterns. It’s a shame these no longer exist though.

Actually there was. Simon discovered that they were HORRIBLY LEAKING oil and they FAILED inspection last time Simon had them inspected.

Nice elevators! Too bad they’re no longer there. If these elevators were suffering from mechanical and environmental issues, wouldn’t the mall management have been smart in keeping these elevators in their same spots and modernized these to a MRL traction system from Schindler, Otis or even ThyssenKrupp instead of Kone?
I wish those piece of beauties would have been completely remodelled at the same spot. EPIC FAIL!
Hopefully some new glass elevators will be installed elsewhere.

Can someone shed some more light on what happened to these elevators? I would like to know more. I heard they had valve issues and were leaking oil badly. I also heard the motor would overheat.
It’s because the motor room was so far away. Like I mean hundreds of feet away in a service area.

I went to this mall today and I saw no sign of these scenic elevators so I wonder if they got rid of them or not.
They're gone. They were leaking oil and we're beyond repair due to the machine room fire.

Kone may or may not be everyone’s cup of tea when it comes to elevators, but given the mechanical history as well as the location of the machine room of the former Dovers that became enthusiast favorites, imo the mall was in the right to replace them with Kone’s

They unfortunately had to remove these elevators. 1) The machine room was well within a service corridor and 2) as a result of the distance between the elevators and the machine room, the valves suffered major leakage throughout the machine room due to getting the hydraulic oil to the jacks, and 3) the motors were constantly overworked in pumping the oil from such a distance, one of them even caught fire

I could be completely wrong here... But is it good for those elevators to move before the inner doors have closed the whole way?
Because from where I am seeing it the outer doors close, and then the car starts to move... I have noticed that with a lot of other Dovers... Is this good/normal?
This is a late comment, but it’s just how the inner gate switch engages, which allows the car to move. If you look on an elevator on the top door track you can see the gate switch on the car part.
For some reason I thought they were replacing these...
To my opinion, according to ih8escalators, he said that he's guessing that Schindler is coming in to replace them
May or June from what I hear is when Kone will mod these. Hope I get to ride them in June

David Ng Unfortunately, these elevators had to go for 3 reasons:
#1: They were in very bad shape
#2: They were BADLY leaking hydraulic oil
#3: They were VERY BADLY damaged during that machine room fire.
4: They were tired of you talking about them non-stop.

I like loud hydros, but I usually prefer traction over not-so-loud hydros, especially taller than four floors
