Our Clapped Out Honda CR500 Stretches its Legs (Sand Drag Racing)

  • We take our 1985 Honda CR500 to Busco Beach ATV park to hit the track and drag strip. This will the the first time this short rod CR500 has been out of the CarsandCameras Motorplex, and riding the big bore 2 stroke on the sand is trickier than we thought! The CR500 dirt bike wants to wash out in the sand, and the drag strip is in not great condition, leading to slow launches at the drag strip. We put the CR500 up against our 263cc Mega Moto 212 mini bike, and the results were surprisingly close!

If you're going to run it on sand anymore you guys should get a pair of sand tires or at least a paddle tire for the rear. The 500 just has too much power to get traction on sand with knobby tires.

It could possibly be bad grounding locations as well. LUND MX just got his hands on a 85 CR500 and his wouldn't even attempt to make sparks. Even with trying the stators, coils and cdi boxes he knew worked that came from his other 500's that would start in two kicks.

Before I learned how to start my cr500 I had to get pulled/bump start to get it running as well. Once I learned the technique I can get it to start on the first kick almost every time, even after sitting all winter. There's a handful of little details to doing it, I can make a video demonstrating if you'd like.

My first bike as a kid was a 1983 XR100. Beautiful bike, but it's hard to believe that Honda was developing the CR500 that same year and was selling them the next. The 2 bikes are complete opposites in almost every way apart from color and number of wheels. A mighty sixty horsepower versus... six. I miss that XR100.
It's been fun watching this series, hope you guys have a few more planned for this bike. Do a rebuild! Take it to a track and do a collab with someone who'll jump it! You guys need to keep making videos though, so don't hurt yourselves lol take care and thanks for the fun content.

Cool cb350. The cylinder bore on that can't be more than 2 in.lol my scariest ride on a motorbike was the 750 triple. I had enough for life after a mile. Lol
My only time on one of those suicide 500s was when I swapped my Suicidal 200x (Big Bore Cam and head work 30 mil carb super trap Extended swingarm and 8-in over Dura blue axle. ) for a short time when riding.
I survived but it scared the crap out of me. I'm 6 ft and my feet were still 8 inches from the ground. Wasn't a big deal until I ended up on a long 2 ft wide Ridge. Lol Being new it was scary fast although handled quite nicely.
Same couldn't be said for two of my friends. I didn't realize the one I swapped with had never been on a three-wheeler. He was going to show off ended up nailing the side of the van hard with the driver and all the beer he just picked up in between. He ended up with a broken arm and almost lost his eye plus it totaled the side of his van. Or rather company van which got him fired.
My three wheeler was just a little Dusty.lol
    Still have it still runs.
Now if only I still could. Seven decades of trashing my body has taken its toll.lol
    🤠🏞️🐂

Good job guys, im no CR500 expert, just one of the fortunate /unfortunate people to of owned one back in the 90s. It could be a number of issues, from the impeller bearing seal letting bottom end pressure through and the cap is designed to release over pressuring coling fluids, but normally there is a pressure release hole in the impeller casing that would piss coolant first.
Bad head and or head gasket. A hole in the rad. Or cracked boar into the cooling sleeve and that's over pressuring it. Good luck with it, that bike wants to live, and they are getting a bit thin on the ground now.
Happy New Year to all the Cars and Cameras subscribers from the UK.

Brings back many memories me and a couple of friends had an 84 rm 500 we were 16 and scared of it but we needed see what she was capable of so with a cutout cereal box and liquid gasket bodged the blown gasket and cranked the head bolts down and sent it into orbit we sold it after a very near death my friend lifted it to far and flipped God was looking down on him that day the back of the bike snapped of and had heavy damage

  • @toddmitchell1889

pressure check the coolant system and engine included, an blown head gasket or warped head will aid in hard starting, fouling of plugs and in cars it causes water to flush out of the system because it builds up steam.

Just a FYI, I'm an amputee, lost my right arm in a motorcycle accident (street bike).. It look over a decade but I rode again, started on my kx-125, then I bought a cr-480, yes I rode that bike with one arm and you guys need to let the back wheel steer.. too many mini bikes with no power, big bore power you steer with the back tire..
