Funny! I love it! I'd love to see that V-twin do 100mph!
"this is a part from... something, idk, picked it off the ground" love it
Those IAT's are a little spicy, I'm sure an intercooler will help quite a bit. An intercooler, E85, and a smaller pulley might make it almost as fast as a stock Insight! Keep up the great work. I love every one of these videos.
He would not get very far on e85
@@donaldtrump1300 demtard fuel. Hahaha
Why not?
@@kirbyswarp He will indeed get poorer fuel economy if he went to E85, he'd also need larger injectors. ~40% more just going to E85, and if boost is raised then proportionally more. Figure ~30% decrease in cruising gas mileage. Still worth it as detonation is pulled back quite a bit.
e85 is probably a bad idea given that he's using a predator engine. Most small engines aren't designed with high alcohol fuels in mind. Odds are he'd run into a bunch of his plastic and rubber parts breaking down due to too much ethanol. Also you're adding to the injector and fuel pumps's duty load on top of already adding to it with the increased fuel/air volume from using the supercharger. switching to e85 requires something like a 30% increase in fuel flow.
Look into a knock sensor circuit for the efi. A lot of power to be made with timing and boost. Possible idea over an intercooler is methonal injection. Definitely be running 93 fuel. Maybe even look into e85. E85 and boost go together very well. Looking forward to next week.
Knock sensors are tuned to specific frequencies, this would take some effort to select the correct one.
@@bobroberts2371 Yes. You have to know engines normal vibrations and somehow determine dangerous vibrations. Knock sensor is actually sound frequerency sensor.
The mighty Piso electric canon
@@dorhocyn3 Did we find the good, the bad, the ugly JIMBO talked about?
Agreed on all points! Although rigging an intercooler in somehow would be a lot more interesting. I would worry about air restriction, with any kind of rigged in intercooler though.
Even if finding a knock sensor and getting it dialed in to work correctly would be a challenge it would definitely be a good idea regardless. Working solely off IATs, power, and "it didn't blow up yet," is really not an ideal plan with boost.
For intercooler selection, I wonder how a factory top mounted intercooler from a Subaru would manage heat in this application. They're not too big, not too expensive, and it could easily be shoehorned into the engine bay as a front mount intercooler or a top mount with a hood scoop feeding it. (Also showing people the Insight means business!)
If he went TMIC like a WRX he’d definitely also want the WRX scoop so people know that this isn’t your grandmas insight
An air to air on a supercharhed car is not the move.
@@kirbyswarp he needs air to water
@@kirbyswarp when Subaru used these superchargers on their 3 cylinders they used small air to air intercoolers to pretty good results.
@@keithberwanger6595 Did JIMBO find the good the bad and the ugly here?
The part about running out of room in a car with a go-kart motor just got me lol
In regards to cooling the intake charge, this can be done in 2 ways. With an intercooler, or with water injection. Water injection can be done with a small single nozzle at the outlet of the supercharger. Water not only will greatly cool the intake air charge down, but it will also allow you to run more ignition timing gaining even more power.
If you go with an intercooler, it will have to be mounted somewhere in the air flow. The longer piping will decrease your throttle response. The other option would be to go with an air to water intercooler. This would allow you to keep the short pipe distance between the stupid charger and the intake on the cement mixer. You could then either run a small radiator up front to keep the water cool for the intercooler, or you could run a one to two gallon container inside the car(because there isn’t enough room under the hood) where you could fill it up with ice water and actually have intake air temps of below ambient……. until the ice melts!
You’ve got lots of options, and honestly any of them would make for good power gains, and help in tuning as well.
Maybe Alcohol injection?
🤷
@@Dis-Emboweled Actually, using high alcohol percentage fuel like E85 is already help, but it'll definitely mess with the tune setting.
Injecting water directly into the engine has more benefits and simplicity on the other hand the intercooling will increase complexity and weight .
But it’s also like nitrous in that you have to fill it. And that gets old.
@@Dis-Emboweled alcohol injection is not as effective at cooling the intake charge as water injection is. For example, a tea spoon of water will be able to absorb more heat than the same table spoon of alcohol can. Granted, alcohol does increase the effective octane rating, but more of it has to be injected to be effective due to the lower BTU content of alcohol.
For comparison, a Citroen 2CV6 with a stock 602cc 29bhp engine (and 2 cylinders) has a 0-60 of about 26-30 seconds, depending on whether the wind's at your back, so you're nearly there... :D
The 2CV motors turned faster as well that is where the hp gain comes in.
A 2CV weighs around 610lbs/272kg less than a Mk1 Insight. I guess the Street Legal Go-Kart will be a bit lighter without the batteries and motor though.
Wow, 0-60 in half a minute.... Its weird, but that sound fast to me..... I need to up my game.
@@ferrumignis 2CV doesn't have insight aero
@@robotcantina8957 how many ponies so far you reckon?
The root type supercharger produces most amount heat into the intake air than any other supercharger so you will have to introduce cooling for intake charge. Keep this in the mind that water cooling has more benefits into your type of car which is under powered and more weight.

Still sad the primary on the CVT is not tunable. Would be nice if it held 3800-4300 rpm from 0 to 60. Loving the progress of pushing more power out of this one banger. A twin 440 2 stroke would put it to shame though and would be a much more manageable size than the V twin. Plus brapp brapp noises.
pass on the 2-stroke here, burns oil along with the fuel, but agreed on the drive-pulley, that thing needs tuning for that engine relative to that car
Are they not like a scooter? On my scooter you could swap the weights in the front pulley to change ratios, I put a sidecar on mine so it'd bog with all of the extra weight, so I went with 19g weights instead of 28g weights so it revved out more. You need to work on your clutching, the rpm should jump to peak horsepower rpm and hold it there until you let off the throttle. Get a copy of Olav Aaens clutch tunning handbook and learn the operation of a cvt system.
Also maybe look into a snowmobile cvt for 3 reasons, #1 tunning is almost infinite
#2 the secondary will be larger that the unit your running now so will give you a lower starting gear for better acceleration
#3 durability will be much greater
The only issue would be is the primary on snowmobiles fits on the crankshaft with a taper and not a straight shaft key like you have on the predator.
Even if you changed the secondary to one from a 70s arctic cat jackshaft mounted unit you would see benefits from tuning and gearing.
Reason I mention the cat clutch is for availability, belt width and that it mounts on a 1 inch keyed shaft so it would mount easily. Also then you can set the clutches up with the correct center to center distance for proper belt deflection.
For reference the cat clutch is set up for a 1 1/4 inch wide belt.
Definitely this! I've never worked with these clutches but that drop in RPM doesn't feel right.

You could try a water to air heat exchanger. This would allow you to not only improve overall air density but you could also use ice water for 0-60 runs for a small bump short term. It of course would greatly increase complexity and would require an air to water heat exchanger but... For science.
I like the fact that it would greatly increase complexity. for science
Air to water in this application would also help with packaging. He is starting to run low on space, and being. Able to remote mount the radiator would be a boon.
The problem I keep thinking about is, what would you even use for the intercooler?
You can actually get fairly small barrel type water to air intercoolers. This would be good for two reasons:
1. Less air displacement between supercharger and throttle body.
2. As you said, much smaller packaging.
If I was Mr. Cantina, I'd be running an air to water intercooler under the hood, and run the hoses back to the rear of the car. There, I'd mount a radiator and a small electric water pump under the rear bumper if possible. This could possibly eliminate the need for an electric fan, if the low air pressure area behind the car is used cleverly.
However, with the alternator video, I think Mr. Cantina has been a few steps ahead of us already. That water pump is going to need like 4-5A at least.

valves pristine and carbon free. Water seems like a great idea too.
@@ocdman202 wow this is a great idea.. Water should be used more of course. Water has so many upsides.
Don't get me started on the price of gas⛽⛽⛽
@@ocdman202 10% efficiency gain and a clean engine is not worth it apparently for most people to warrant an entire water injection system and tank being installed and maintained. But man I would gladly pour a gallon or two of water in my car on occasion for 10% improvement. And that's for NA motors, there may be even more benefit for forced induction because of the extra heat involved.
The cheapest kits I've seen are the snow brand for about 500 last time I checked, probably more now with inflation. But I feel like you could easily make an effective kit for an NA car for less than 100 using an arduino and some kind of pump and misting nozzle combo. Ideally you would want to vary the flow with the intake vacuum level but even a constant mist would be an improvement over stock.
BMW used to make cars with water injection, you can read about them if you search online.
@@El_Chompo THANK YOU FOR THIS. Your points are worth research online.. Appreciate this. 🌹🌹🌹
A power steering pump and a electric drill work for feeding a turbo oil, just make sure it feeds into a collector for gravity feed

I'd think a simple intercooler setup would be both simple and very beneficial. I've got a Toyota vits (yaris) which I supercharged running 15psi of boost with an eaton m45 positive displacement supercharger. IAT's were over 120c, which is not ideal. I added a small intercooler to that, and IAT's came down to ~30c. I did the exhaust at the same time so unsure exactly what gains the colder IAT temps made by itself, but overall power went from 90wkw to north of 130wkw (that's 175 barley corns for the imperial crowd) Simple and very effective!. Also there's lots of stock intercoolers off older turbo japanese cars which would likely be cheap at a junk yard and ideal for this little 420cc BIG BLOCK!. Love the videos! Don't fire Duke and Cheryl! They're doing a great job!
Yes, Duke and Cheryl are doing great.. I love your quote 175 barley corns for the imperial crowd..💖💖
@@kansasrose2909 You made use of that positive displacement
supercharger.. that is great. Go with what is both simple and
beneficial I agree. We love the imperial crowd.

On 91 octane fuel you should really be targeting in the 10.5-11.0 range for afr. I would strongly suggest a wideband o2 sensor to work with the ecu to properly tune fueling. AEM X-series units are nice and can be had for about $230. From there I would definitely investigate e85, or a small water to air intercooler setup. They are by far the most efficient when considering packaging size. If you need any pointers on the tuning side feel free to shoot me a message!
I'm still watching. This is great stuff.
I still say you should bring the Honda to the car show in St.Ignace. I would love to see this in person plus you could make a really interesting video about the whole thing.
I absolutely love these videos
I like this world. Makes my Prius look like a rocket ship!
Just discovered these videos. Spent a lot of hours fully captivated. Still though, i think an intercooler before and after the supercharger would give a reasonable gain
hey your're guess at the one to one making boost was a good one.
I would add a water tank and a sprayer to a heat exchanger to do the chilling by evaporation for the intercooler :)
HEY JIMBO..... congratulations on reaching 100k subscribers.. ROBOT CANTINA is providing the

I came for the electro mechanical digital wizard hobbled and cobbled debauchery. But I'm going to stay for the hygiene advice.
Those superghargers work in both directions.
That sound coming from a Honda usually spells disaster but here it spells awesome!!
I would love to see you guys try it with a 2 cylinder mechanical direct injection diesel engine, more low end torque to get moving, and you could put twin turbos on it and run the whole thing on vegetable oil.
Hes got one already. I don't think it's fitting in this car tho.
@@octane613 just cut a hole in the hood and let it poke through the top like a muscle car. Also, you could put the engine in the trunk and use a longer drive shaft to the transmission, or use the diesel to run a generator and an electric motor to the transmission to drive the car.
I would love to see this thing on vegetable oil.
@@kansasrose2909 Maybe the kabuto could run on veggie oil
You should not need an intercooler with a sidewinder, just make sure it's pulling cooler air than the engine compartment Cowl induction is the best. The drag coefficient on that Honda should allow for some really nice dense cool air swirling in the cowl area. Suck that in and it will keep things cool enough without the trouble of an intercooler which probably won't be anymore efficient.
Absolutely need an intercooler. I would recommend an air to water IC to better help your space restrictions. Awesome project!
Long time viewer.... This is by far one of the best "just because I can" projects I've ever seen. I love it.

I have never in my life seen a car with wrong spindle on it pass for so long unnoticed. that made my day cracking up about that
Many times I have taken this car apart and never noticed. Thankfully, the correct part is on its way.
That cracked me up. I bought a used GMC Sonoma pickup that had both rear calipers installed upside down. Went to bleed the brakes after buying it and had to scratch my head for a bit wondering how the last guy who worked on the truck missed that!
Great episode ,so worth the wait! Thumbs up Duke and Sheryl! 😘good job team!

It will be interesting to see what the final build with the Stupidcharger will be vs. a unmodified V-twin. My guess is the Stupidcharger will be more powerful.
A 1997 Civic driver myself, I like the idea of swapping the Insight engine for a smaller one. The performance of the supercharged 400cc is (imho) quite disappointing: way back in the seventies (yes, I'm that old...) I drove a Citroën 2CV4, that had a 435cc twin with a claimed 23 HP. Top speed of this "tin umbrella" was around 110 kph (+/- 70MPH) Since the CW of the Insight is half(?) of that of the 2CV I expected the Honda capable of well over 70MPH. Anyway: I enjoy your videos, so keep up the good work!😉
Awesome play!
