The stack talk tells so much of the story. So hot to see & hear an old steamer doing exactly what she was designed & built to do; this is easily one of my fave RUclips steam loco vids, from any country! Thanks heaps mate!! 10/10!
Great video, really enjoyed it. 3642 was (and is) a very good 36 and the RTM by sheer luck was lucky to end up with it. It was one of very few to have two of the best modifications made to the 36 class (if not the only one to have both) - steel cylinders in place of the original cast iron and 38 class long-travel valves. The long-travel valves make it sound more like a 38. Judging by the sound, it sounds like it had about 220 or so tons behind it, maybe a bit more. 36s were allowed 280 tons up Cowan Bank without assistance. It's interesting to note that 3642 took 20 minutes to climb Cowan bank, a 38 on a 310 ton Newcastle Flyer was allowed 12 minutes; can you imagine what that would have sounded like?
3642 was returning from the steamiest event at Maitland (approx 180km north of Sydney) to the NSW Rail Museum at Thirlmere (approx 80km south of Sydney. It carried passengers as far as Concord West a suburb in Sydney.
Superb effect of steam locomotive existing!
Liked how you filmed the whole run up the bank without a break, so many just film short bits which breaks the flow. Great work.
Thanks!
ONYA Howie....Great shots, with plenty of 'continuity', and nice sounds as well.....GOOD STUFF!!!!
Thanks@ Glad you enjoyed!

Glad you enjoyed it! Hopefully it can be repeated later this year with loco 3801
Fantastic! 3642 is really working hard. Love the smoke swirling mourned in the tunnels
Yes, the smoke looked great. Interestingly not much got into the carriage.

Hopefully we will get a chance behind 3801 this year. On return from Maitland Steamfest maybe (hopefully it will still go ahead)
