Nilah released with nerfs of course. and she is basically good at nothing. she is basically an underpowered toplaner. her most efficient skill is wave clear, and she has to do it in melee range while being ultra squishy. In bot lane she is basically like picking an offmeta fighter like yasuo yone etc. except compared to any of those, she has no tricks. all she has is a dash and auto range worse than vayne lol WAY WAY better to just ACTUALLY pick yasuo yone etc. This is another champion that was designed entirely around the idea of "do lots of damage" and was then immediately made weak as fuck so now she is POINTLESS. GG rito fucking geniuses

Facecheck is just bad. The Info it gives is just plain WRONG.
For example what the player usually builds. It shows for my champion that i often build prowlers... which i NEVER built... even ONCE. For enemys it was not better in any case, in best case it was coincidence that it was correct.
For the Abilities of the enemies, most important thing to know is not how they work but the cooldown. Facecheck doesnt tell this incredibly important info.

You hit the nail on the head when you talked about Nilah not feeling like a Melee champion. To me, that is the biggest problem about Nilah from a conceptual point of view. She's supposed to be a melee ADC, yet can have permenent uptime on an ability that increases her melee range to that of some ranged champions. Her passive and ability to effect allies, while making sense in the lore, feels more like something that should be on a support rather than an ADC.
In my eyes, they failed to deliver on making Nilah feel like an ADC or true melee character. The increased auto range turns her into an aggressive thresh, and her team/ally utility makes her feel like a diver support. Just like Bel' Veth, I don't think she's weak at all, but is a dissapointing design in my opinion.
In my eyes, it would be cool to have designed Nilah as either a jungler or a roaming support, who gains stats in the river or something. This not only fits in with her lore, but if you took the roaming support role, let's her share her joy among her entire team more effectively (kind of like an enchanter version of river shen).

I'm shocked you didn't talk about how almost everything she does is hard to see or just looks weird
    is it just me ?
she has a heal that will most likely heal every one of your teammates with her ultimates but it's only shown as a semi-transparent green around her allies (unlike soraka for example)
her w can be passed to allies, a blueish veil that doesn't look like anything, and prevents damage from auto attacks.... (think of jack's counterstrike or even gwen's w they are so easy to see compared to that)
her auto attack animation is really weird when you compare it to almost every champs in the game (it almost looks underwhelming to me) and doesn't really look different from her q...
I'm pretty sure you were the one talking about how jhin has an incredible design because it's really easy to understand what he does just by looking at him, I'm not sure that someone who didn't see the trailer will really understand what she is supposed to be when she comes out...

So many of the problematic League champions feel like they were designed by third graders having a playground argument. "I have a shield, so your laser can't hit me." "Well I have a missile that destroys shields." "But I have a gun that shoots down your missile." And so forth.
When champs are able to negate everything that could possibly be done to them, the game just becomes a skill check, where the opponent can't possibly win if they're just slightly worse at the game. When champions have clear strengths and weaknesses, there's at least the possibility of out-strategizing your opponent, which I think is more fun.

I've noticed that all games that develop a competitive type of scene become like this. I originally experienced it with Yugioh. The game becomes about control effects, essentially, and at that point interaction disappears because the control effects don't operate within the rules that make the thing what it is: they prevent the thing from happening. It causes a devolution where you have to either have more negates, or what you play has to be able to do so much at once that the negates are exhausted and then you can remove whatever is causing the negates.

  • @Herio7
    @Herio7 2 года назад +342

She is epitome of what I'm calling forced design. Riot thought of something "cool" ie. melee adc, then forcibly created hero forgetting that their own game limitations and rules. Their skills aren't created to be coherent, play well, have unique twist or whatever but to solve problems created by that arbitrary cool idea.
Melee adc have to be powerful enough to stand against ranged opponent but they couldn't be self-sufficient because that would make her better at top. So Riot shoehorned some support/pair oriented skills. Next problem lack of defensive items so they had to add some powerful defensive skill but it can't last long otherwise she will be broken. That creates dps problem, without range there is no way to deal damage safely and defensive skill cannot protect long enough. So they added burst but not too much so she can't be assassin/diver.
Problem is with Riot from very beginning were restrictlingly "streamlining" the game (removed roamer/ganker, nerf lane swaps, added herald so top is more interesting point, added vision participation to every hero). Now innovation and line blurring design fail or are broken.

    • @Amaling
      @Amaling 2 года назад +17

Yeah that’s a very good point. The restrictions on creativity over time, compared to something like Dota which is still creative, makes the design team break their backs trying to make something different. That something different still has to somehow fit into the design constraints. It would be fine if Nilah is an ADC and midlaner, but I don’t think they’ll allow it. Just force her numbers around until she’s only really viable in the “desired position” like what they did to Viego

I agree, it's like you could take some things from her kit and make a pretty decent assassin or skirmisher, but nope, she HAS to be a melee adc even if it doesn't really make a lot of sense. She has a shit ton of stats just to make her able to survive down there, so... why bother? It beats the purpose of making a creative and interesting kit, just add a bunch of stuff until she doesn't get sistematically destroyed

Her passive (exp part) really messes up bot lane. The bonus exp only comes when she kills a minion but if she kills the first wave she will only need to kill one melee minion for lvl 2 (for her and her support) while every other botlaner has to get the first wave and the 3 melee minions making it very hard to get lvl 2 before her. The lvl 2 matters way more on bot lane than any other lane cause you have 2 champions and you get twice the bonus stats from levels and 2 abilities insted of 1. @ebbandfloatzel 2 года назад

@atDrago But even if she was support, wouldn't she already seem very diverse compared to the rest of the enchanters or even supports? She's closest to Rakan but they still have wildly different aesthetics and gameplay, especially if they gave her another enchanter specific skill. I'd love for a unique male enchanter, like a nobleman who's stoic charisma rallies those around them with the support of his spells. Possibly even a hextech user from Demacia, who's ideals matched Jayce from Arcane's version of him, a protector who believes hextech can save lives. Or an old vastayan man who's attunement to nature and gained wisdom gives them access to primal magics, but is cynical and critical of those around him. But if Nilah was a support, I wouldn't have bat an eye. She'd have been pretty unique visually and gameplay wise, especially if they kept the lifesteal heals idea, and added another supportive ability. And again: the closest to her visually, being Rakan, fits a more engage heavy role... Diversity shouldn't be so one note to deny that from her.

By that, I mean that she's the kind of champion that isn't really that great as the main engage that initiates the fight, but she's instead someone that wants to either follow up on a teammate's initiation, or turn around an enemy's initiation. Think of it as essentially a skirmisher version of someone like Seraphine, Braum or Aurelion Sol. I can also see her playing teamfights a lot like Diana, due to both being squishy sustained damage melee characters with decent burst, a targeted dash that can be cast twice in quick succession, and a giant aoe ult that pulls in enemies.
I have absolutely no idea what her early game playstyle is going to be, though. Guess we'll just have to wait for the Nilah players to figure it out.

Riot needs to stop making champs that snowball hard, it's frustrating dealing with snowballers for mainly two reasons:
-They comprise of the most toxic base player, snowballers when caught will blame the rocks on the rift before blaming themselves…Viegos, Samiras, and now Nilahs, they just attract bottom of the barrel players that will start to flame as soon as something goes wrong.
-champions that farm a bit and can comeback after playing badly due to utility (Jhin) are fine, but snowballers that you know immediately after they appear on your map that no amount of dodging or building will stop them from destroying your kda are not fun or fair.
Give snowballers less gap closers, make them higher risk, don't overload them with life steal, not every other ability is cc heavy, they shouldn't feel like five champions in one, I don't wanna feel frustrated after the game because no amount of map awareness+correct building was enough to counter the fed belveth, but oh well, god knows riot has created at least five more champions like this in the time it took me to write this rant.

  • @trafalgarlaw8373
    @trafalgarlaw8373 Год назад +2

People hating a bit too hard. In a straightup smack fight she will of course out-smack a normal adc, as any melee adc would.
    1) Passive: The healing for allies in her kit is mostly bait, and generally ignorable. It makes enchanters not completely useless with her. First 10 minutes you'll get around 100hp from it, support includes. The bonus xp is useful in laning if you're last hitting, which is a tradeoff for losing cs due to poke. If you're alone there's no benefit.
    2) Q: Passive gives a lot of stats later. Early on, nothing. At 1 full crit item you get 4% lifesteal and 6% armor pen, which is a little touch but not huge. Once at 3 crit items you get a solid amount, 12% lifesteal and 18% armor pen, roughly 1.3k in stats. However, items like eclipse, maw or deaths dance are often crucial, so you often only get that at 4 items, before which many games end. Full lategame, with 4-5 items, Nilah becomes terrifying. Even then she's a melee adc who can get focused down in teamfights if she's just a bit too far up, or be useless by being too far back.
    3) W: Really nice for the short window where you can turn around a fight. You can't really "trade" with it, because to do damage you need to fully go in, with no way out. Forces enemies to run/use skills for 2 seconds. Still, 30 second cooldown. Once the enemy baits it out, you cannot fight. Situationally insane vs champs like Rengar, especially lategame, where you only need a few seconds to kill squishies.
    4) E: short range, targeted dash. 30-20 second cd. Not enough to directly dash to a ranged enemy. You need to go through a minion in the way, which non-trash adc's will avoid, or have a support cc/engage. Even then you probably need 2 dashes, maybe 1. After an engage or running, you need close to a minute before you can consider fighting again, because with 1 short range targeted dash you're just not gonna make it close. Any enemy mobility or cc and you're stuck, getting kited to death.
    5) Ult: Nice bit of extra dmg, although you cant AA during it. Good for a bit more healing and keeping running enemies close enough to finish them. Potentially insane dmg later if hit on 3+opponents (as with most aoe ults)
    6) General weaknesses: the short range really fucks you over during lane. The mobility is really situational, long cd, no resets, and outplayable. Also can't be used to escape unless the minions are running up. Really support dependent. No or bad engage support and a capable enemy, you just don't touch the enemy and lose farm. Lategame you need to be closer to actually reach the fight. It's easy to either be too close and get oneshot, or to be too far behind and the fight is over before you can do anything. If you get behind, and cant statcheck, you become completely useless.
    7) However, strengths: early, if it comes to a 2v2 and the enemy fucks up and you can stay on them, you win almost all 2v2s. If you hit all Qs and stay alive, you have high damage output potential. At 3+ items, you absolutely shred towers. Left alone you can push rapidly on a sidelane, and win many 1v1s or even 1v2s.
In general, lategame is where you start to really shine to a 1v9 degree. The free stats start to show, what would be single target dmg on other adcs is aoe for you (ult, q, cone AA), and if you land on squishy enemies, you can oneshot them. The healing of BT, passive and maybe shieldbow means that if you kill the carries, bruisers and tanks dont have enough to kill you, and you can just win fights no other adc could. More like a Yasuo than a Samira. At fullbuild you also destroy turrets in 2 seconds, 1v1 anything and can 1v2 most things.
Overall, Yasuo is a good comparison. Early outdamages if he can stick to you, lategame a dps beast that crits with free stats, 1 negate and conditional mobility. Easy to feed with. Potentially insane late, but counterable and difficult.

Lots of speculation for a champion that is a literal Samira copy.
Samira was overpowered, unkillable, nerfed to the ground. It seems Riot wanted to "try again" and make Nilah's kit a more "fair" version of Samira's. Instead of Windwall, its a Dodge (that you grant to allies) instead of dash resets to allies allowing for safety AND aggression, its just a 2 stack dash so you have 2 tries to use it and nothing else. It stands to speculate Nilah will go the way of Samira and be overpowered and be nerfed to the ground.

Similar in theory, very different in practice. The E has a massive cd with no resets. You cant use it for safety, beyond a small dash if you're not fighting. For an actual fight you need both dashes just to actually get to the adc. There's nothing left to just "safety". Samira's wipe lets you dodge key cc abilities and dmg, Nilah gets to avoid AA dmg, but enemies then can just run and use spells. Also a 30 second cd, so once its baited out and with E, youre on a minute cd during which you cant do shit.

She could deflect projectiles, she had a cleave on her whip with an ability but her whip was always ranged. She could attach to either an enemy or teammate to pull herself to them. Her ult was like a windwall but instead of destroying projectiles it caught them, allowing her to use her deflect ability to send them back to where she aims. Also about her abilities, she really seems to me like a skirmisher with a built-in support. Why does she have so many healing passives when most ADCs need a support for that? Why does her ult cause shields for her allies and pull (cc) enemies toward her? Like, those both seem like support-ish abilities to me. Not to mention the shroud that ups mr and dodges basics, and can be passed on to teammates. To me she almost looks like a new carry support that they decided to give ADC damage numbers to, and then added the "forced bot lane" passive so she requires a support, as if to say "see? her passive works with supports! There are more than 20 champs in each class, and even if their wasn't, the chances of getting both teams to completely ban one entire class of champ are astronomically low. Idk why many forget that but you can use her Q on structures. Which is kinda insane late game. You'll deal like 950 - 1000 damage with it on towers and inhibs, weaving auto attacks will make you so good at pushing towers.
Also, your W can be shared, so your supp or jungle, etc can benefit from the effect.
However it doesn't dodge tower attacks, that was just a bug on PBE.
You can buy support items to increase your healing and kind of play her support, pretty well. Or you have a fasting senna who will get accelerated even further thanks to the EXP effect.
Navoris is pretty strong on her, so late game she will deal good damage and dodge a lot of attacks. Additionally having AH is beneficial for her, as her Q is a pretty strong ability, with all those free stats.
Her R can pull enemies over walls, if they are close enough, which is pretty strong as well.

So I reworked Nilah in my head, just wanted to give her a clear identity; that being high uptime, AOE damage and survivability to trade off mobility and First Strike privilege.
    P - Joy Unbound
Whenever Nilah is positively affected by ally abilities in champion combat, she receives 3% less damage until leaving champion combat, stacking up to 6 times.
    Q - Formless Blade
Nilah strikes in the target direction dealing damage. If she hits an enemy, her attacks deal damage in a cone.
    W - Terraflow
Nilah extends the Joy Demon’s power to the target area for 5 seconds, losing 40% of her current AD. Enemy champions that damage Nilah and are inside the Demonic area are targetable by Nilah’s attacks. While Nilah is near a Demonic area, she cleanses the debuff and her attacks heal her for 20% of the damage dealt.
    E - Surging Joy
Nilah blasts a water stream in the target direction damaging and slowing the first two enemies hit by 70% for 3 seconds.
If a Demonic area from W - Terraflow is nearby, another stream also surges forth from it, if both streams connect, all enemies hit are stunned for 2 seconds and Nilah cleanses the Terraflow debuff.
    R - Apotheosis
After a brief delay, Nilah explodes the nearby area dealing damage slowing. She also summons four Demonic areas around her, only losing 20% of her current AD. Nilah’s attacks against enemy champions through these Demonic areas deal AOE damage in a cone behind them and heal her for 50% of the damage dealt.

“That passive, an ADC that gets tankier with shields and heals? Lulu with her would be insane and unkillable. Damage reduction on a hyperscaling champion, 200 years design by Rito.”
“Look at that W, so it stays up forever as long as she inside? So stupid”

I think what really bothers me is that she kinda offers nothing to the story. She comes from a relatively unknown region and technically where she comes from does not matter because whoever she was is not who she is now. It's kinda like Pantheon's old lore, except we are never made to care about Nilah's old self that much. She feels very slotted in, and she feels like she would not progress any other storyline. Nilah version 2.0
    Kit:
    P) "All I feel is joy"
100% of the damage taken is fractionated and applied over 3 seconds from the moment the damage occurs. Making a kind of gray life that marks how far the damage goes.
    Q) ""
    3 Activations/Area damage/Applies on-hit effects.
1⁰ and 2⁰ activations are like nilah's enhanced attacks, only with more range and going first from left to right then the other way around. The last enemy hit is rooted for 0.5 by the whip and right clicking on it causes the nilah to pull itself towards it.
The 3⁰ activation is similar to the current nilah's Q and generates a waterlogged area that expands a bit in the affected region. Enemies in this area as well as in the river are marked as "wet" even for a few seconds after leaving the affected region.
    W) "Fluid Defense"
Dodges basic attacks except turrets for a short time. If nilah doesn't move, attack, or activate abilities for the duration, the effect time is doubled and nilah is healed. This heal prioritizes damage mitigation over the gray health she has accumulated and has a greater effect on it.
    E) "Water walk"
-Passive: Increases water speed (River and 3⁰ Q Area) and slow resistance.
-Active: For 6 seconds, attacks and abilities against "wet" enemies have a chance to deal high additional damage. Critical chance increases this percentage.
    UTE) "Demonic Intervention"
Deals gradual damage in an area around the champion then pulls enemies around for a large amount of damage. Nilah heals based on damage dealt to champions. This cure prioritizes the mitigation of gray life and has a greater effect on it.
Similar to nilah's current ute, but two demon hands hover over her head generating a swirl of water.
Translated on google bc im lazy hope it is still readable.

The short comment about Vex encapsulates the whole problem that people see with new champions. Vex was honestly such a refreshing break from every single other character released directly surrounding her. The releases before and after her felt very strange and lacked the same sort of clear set goal that Vex had. Am I saying Vex isn't overpowered? No.... that champion is something. But I am saying that Vex is so cleverly designed in a way that makes her goal understandable and connects her lore themes and her aesthetic with gameplay. Riot has placed an emphasis on creating champions who feel cohesive and with a clear goal, and everyone from Viego to Nilah lacks that. Viego is ... inexplicable in that he has so much bullshit crammed together in a way that doesn't make sense and just makes him annoying to play against because you don't know what to focus on. Gwen is a doll turned mist fighter who also happens to be really good at sewing because her master was a seamstress and also has a broken ability that doesn't even really make sense in the context of the Hallowed Mist. Akshan is the most fucking bullshit cringe stupid cramming of abilities ever seen in a champion. Zeri and Renata were actually quite good imo but they still feel like they failed to fully cover their bases considering that Zeri was supposed to be an anti-shield character (do not see it) and Renata an enchanter with control (she still overly relies on her team playing off of what she does because she is still an enchanter). Now Bel'Veth just feels so out of place because none of what her lore suggests about a swarming, reality eating, and rapidly growing creature is represented in the game. Her scaling doesn't really represent her character and her swarm capabilities don't feel connected to her lore. Everything wrong with Nilah is in this video. She lacks clear weaknesses but has very obvious strengths that make for things they shouldn't (ie her being a melee duo laner)

    Things that need to go:
Free xp: Her Q cooldown and low cost are enough to compensate being melee just the same as Mordekaiser's old E.
Team block: Why does this exist? I think this is to encourage her staying bot but her passive already does that with the heal/shield buff, and this ability has built in anti counterplay. The outplay to Jax is to focus his teammates while he's blocking, but Nilah can just give it to them too. This could be ok on a less dangerous support champion, but on the champ that's also destroying you it's too much, especially as a basic ability.
Turret block: Any dps/burst champion should never have turret block. Even self shield is a bit much, ie Riven. The turret being a source of safety is somewhat sacred ground that you just don't mess with, or you get burned. Nothing is more frustrating than feeling like you're safe and you're not. To balance this out, diving is one of the riskiest yet potentially most rewarding things you can do, but it's a fine line of making sure it's risky enough.

The issue is that league doesn’t allow hard counters to exist anymore. Of course a melee adc should be destroyed in lane by an artillery adc, the same way a squishy enchanter mid would get countered by a xerath or syndra. When you make it to where champs are good even against their counters then they become incredibly over powered against anyone who doesn’t counter them.
