In layman's terms, a democracy can be described as a majority of persons using their numbers to deprive an individual of property and / or rights. Mob rule. I prefer a constitutional Republic, but I'm really not certain we've ever really been that, either. I'm an ANTI-Federalist, for lack of a better way of saying it.
