      I also have an original monitor, are you aware of any caps that can go bad on that?

    The first PC I ever used was an Apple II Plus my first day of high school in 1982. I was hooked. Although at home I had all Commodore. Be sure to get the new Yellowstone card for the IIe.

    I was watching Your video because I wanted to know how to restore my machine. At the very moment You talked about "the tendency to burst..." my machine was starting to smoke out of the power supply. I unplugged it immediately and no further harm was done. Sometimes You cannot make up the things, that real life comes up with.

    Thank you SO MUCH for this video, because I've been looking for a video on how to clean the Apple IIe keyword, which my Apple IIe really needs a cleanup!

    Good job on replacing the power supply RIFA. Looking at the original one you took out and seeing those cracks in it, you were probably just a few power cycles away from it giving up the magic smoke. I tell everyone I know with Apple Ii computers to at minimum replace that cap.

      hey man no telling if youll see this now, but im here because i just got my grandpas //e and heard a few cracks and pops, then opened it and saw smoke. any idea on how id go about finding exactly what caused it? it was from the power supply i know that for sure. is it just something that needs to be replaced or should i opt for something that maybe has better cooling since it is enclosed in a metal box?

      @@ryanmeaser7922 Hi Ryan. That was the RIFA filter capacitor blowing inside the power supply. They are super easy to replace. You can also just cut them out and the power supply will continue to work. If you don't replace it or cut it out, the RIFA will continue to smoke when the computer is powered on. My contact details are on my Geek With Social Skills channel about page. Send me a message and I can reply back with pictures to show you what needs to be replaced. I can even send you a replacement RIFA cap no problem.

    Where can I find more info about the inside of this power supply? I just like old tech, I don’t know much about electronics and I wanna use my computer knowing it won’t explode, you know? My RIFA capacitor looks to be surprisingly in really really good shape, thought she’s still coming out, I’m not risking it. But to my surprise, the big orange guy in the middle is covered in some hard mystery goo. It’s a dark amber colour? 6:00 is a good example of where I’m looking right now. Is this something I need to be looking into? The computer worked great when I booted it up so……….

    I tested voltages on two on my iie platinum's and they where fine when running the computer. I then hooked up a disk drive and POOF power supplies went down and now I need to recap them lol.

    I had the same bad cap, it exploded and black smoke filled the room the smell lasted 2 days. So you don’t need the cap to run the computer??? I haven’t used it since because of that.

    should i do this to my Apple IIe Platnum's power supply to be better safe than sorry? I have heard that the Apple II PSUs had a capacitor that was prone to failing over time. I have no knowledge of soldering, when i attempted to solder new caps on my Pentium 4 motherboard back when i was a teen, i screwed the board up and burned my hand on the iron and ended up with blisters and a lot of pain.

    • @pentiummmx2294
      @pentiummmx2294 6 лет назад

      i took it apart and saw the capacitor, i took a pic with my phone i.imgur.com/4w97EAa.jpg, how is it? i need to learn how to solder/desolder, i was wanting to practice on some dial-up modems and a dead video card that i have in my parts box, maybe try soldering on a new vga port on my s3 trio 64 video card. my dad took away my soldering equipment after that accident years ago sadly.

    I'm no expert by any means, but my understanding is that the Apple II series was very well made, almost "bulletproof," and generally very easy to repair.

    I have a question i hope you can help with. I have a macintosh IIe a2s2128 and it does this weird thing now where I turn it on all it will say is Apple //e and my keyboard will not work at all. However when filp the switch real quick (turn it off and back on real quick) the command prompt pops up with random characters on the screen. But it allows me to enter commands and the computer will process them. If you can give me any advice on why its doing this i will be very grateful
