    This is terrible reporting.
You just can’t purchase real grenades anywhere in America much less the Big Island, they’re illegal.
This reporting is designed to scare and sensationalize. The reporters keep referring to the items as “grenades” instead of “replicas”, which they are.
I doubt a follow up report will be made explaining where and how the Japanese tourist bought these replica grenades. They obviously arrived on the big island somehow.
It’s obviously legal to sell replica grenades in Hawaii.
Not a smart move on the tourists behalf. Having said that, painting him as a terrorist and felon, and constantly calling them “grenades” is just plain insidious and disingenuous. Bad reporting.

He probably got them on Mamo street as a souvenir and did not consider taking them through TSA...

There's tags on the grenades, he bought them in a store as a novelty or souvenir obviously.

When TSA finds a loaded, or unloaded (weapon) an automatic fine of 10K needs to be levied. No excuses, no going to court with your ambulance chasing lawyer. Thirty one hundred weapons in a single year. Wow we have a problem.
