I believe the water is the way he sees love. He falls into the pool which is like falling in love. He is like a life guard in the video so it's as if he fell in love with a local who comes to the pool. In the song it says "This isn't what I signed up for." As if to say that he signed up for the community, not for the sole purpose to fall in love. The dissolving colors, to me, represent the love that he bottles up inside of himself, maybe the colors presenting themselves are his true feelings for this person presenting themselves.

I was listening to this on loop during my first major heartbreak around 4-5 years ago. Kinda crazy how hurt I was back then and how well I am now.
