The Stranglers Guildford 19/11/78 Part 1

A `triumphant' homecoming for The Stranglers as they visit their local University in Guildford for a TV recording. Trying to get under the radar here, but it was a programme by the UK's national TV station where they filmed university gigs for broadcast. The National Union Of Students had agreed to The Stranglers request that non university types would be admitted as well and then reneged on the deal.
What you see here is the pre-broadcast warm up before the programme itself went live (this the complete footage as filmed, taken from the BBC tape). You'll see the clock at 11.10 which signifies the start of the on air broadcast, and the inaccurate intro by Pete Drummond (`Hanging Around' was on `Rattus Norvegicus' wasn't it ?)
Anyway, be sure to watch Part 2...and to all those Stranglers fans who have been waiting forever to see this to the bitter end....glad to be of service.
Those were the days when bands didn't kiss arse just to be on TV.

I was a this show aged 15. I only got a ticket (which I still have) 'cus my mate's mum was a cleaner at the Uni!

This reminds me of when I went to see Dr Feelgood at Goldsmith's College. I waited in the queue with my mate for an hour, only to be told, when the doors were about to open that the gig was for students only. Luckily, my mate had an NUS card and his uni card. He lent me one of the cards and I got in, even though he had bright ginger hair and I didn't. I saw the Stranglers at The Roundhouse. Bottom of the bill was The Jam.

My copy of Black and White doesn't have Hanging Around on it. Perhaps Pete Drummond should have been the one to use his Crackerjack Pencil to eject himself from his own backside!

Let's just say I used to work for a certain broadcasting organisation ;-) It's what they call a `viewing copy' hence the timecode clock. I just don't see why this shouldn't be out there....it was public service after all !
