    Question:
When planning to pump available water from a pond or creek low on the property to a spot higher on the property and perhaps too far for a ram pump, what considerations in pump selection and other logistics should I be keeping in mind? Are there reasons not to pump out a swampy low spot to recirculate water to the top of the property? Am I better off just dropping a pipe into the water or installing a well point?
The pump referenced in Geoff's answer is the Bunyip Pumps by Porta's Affordable Pumps: www.portasaffordablepumps.com.au. If anyone reading this buys one, tell them Geoff sent you. Bryon has promised to donate one to the Permaculture Research Institute after 10 referrals 😉

Have you ever seen , I think it was in ancient Egypt, the stiff coils that lift water? It can be done by hand.

Question Mr Lawton, are there any research and development sites near Fresno California that you are aware of?
just thought i asked as I'm on limited resources and wish to use strategy and common sense in acquiring additional resources for a sustainable and prosperous future.

That's really interesting question and answer. I also wonder, do you leave it there to form a chinampa, do you pump it back up to reticulate, or do you just store it as extra? Or do you hold enough water to do all that?

Thinking about my property, and my extreme lack of flowing water to power this wonderful device.
My challenge is, when I need to pump water, it is in a drought. No water to power this. So... wind or other appropriate technology will have to do.
