    NOTE: A lot of people - a whole lot - have corrected me on an error I made in this video. To be clear, I filmed this (and a few other videos) while still figuring out my channel. As something to talk about while testing cameras and practicing speaking to them, I chose to discuss some favourite books, because it gave me an easy topic. I never intended them to go public at the time, so I didn't bother to check my facts. I just worked from my recollections, and one or two errors of memory occurred. The one that seems to have people really incensed is where I erroneously stated that Poledra was in wolf form when her daughters were conceived. I NOW KNOW THIS TO BE INCORRECT. I was confused. I apologise. Please don't be mean to me in the comments. I'm only human, and I feel I have been chastised enough. Thank you. 😊 P.S. The mean comments (and abusive emails) continued even after I posted the above message in the description section, so I'm posting it again here. And to the person who emailed me and told me I should take the video down - no! It's been one of my most popular videos! This is a modest little channel. Why should I take it down because a small (but vocal) minority can't get past one little error!? This is a hobby channel for a person with disabilities trying to come out of their shell. Either be kind, or go away! 😜😜

      The video was really cozy to watch somehow, and yeah, youve been successful in persuading me to give the series a longer try. I agree with your view on the self-censorship culture, its getting worse with the PC culture. We are more and more inclined to say nice and ethical stuff and (I mean it’s good on its own ,but when you’re pressured into it then the society turns hypocritical) that makes things boring. Anyways nice introduction

      So lovely to see you enjoying my back catalogue. 😊 Yes, this set of books is a great introduction to Fantasy, containing as it does many of the more popular tropes - but done well. These books are DANGEROUS!!!!! They are almost impossible to put down. I read the first one years ago. I had a normal job, get to work at 8:00 in the morning, you know. My wife cautioned me - it's 1:00 in the morning. You need sleep! No problem, said I. I'll just read a bit further - I couldn't stop myself. Somewhere around 4:30 AM, I happened to glance at the clock. Didn't get much sleep that night. Wasn't worth much the next day. This went on for ten volumes!! By the time it was over, I was a walking zombe! I've read the series (all 10 books) six or seven times now, usually once every year or two. Yes, I know the plot lines, but it's always fun to visit these people again - like seeing old friends. Be CAREFUL! This series is frightfully ADDICTIVE!!!!

      @@kitsworld My friend, you are very welcome! It's a pleasure!! Here's something else for you to look at - Bill Baldwin's famous Helmsman science fiction series, an unabashed space opera. A great read, but what happened in the end is frustrating in the extreme. He wrote several volumes, and then had a very very long pause (maybe 10 years or so) then he wrote one more book, and then died. He was slightly more than half way through the series. It is a somewhat risque space romp. The hero has romantic encounters wherever he goes. Patrick Rothfuss and George RR Martin may be slow (but worth it) and so was this guy - then he died - and then nothing! I could scream.

      I don’t know, in my experience Eddings either hits hard or misses spectacularly. I loved Belgariad when I was a kid but on a later reread I found the characters completely flat, worse than caricatures. I also couldn’t finish redemption of Althalus, or make it past book 2 of Sparhawk’s story. But people I respect like Eddings, so I guess it’s just a hit or a miss.

    The best thing about the Belgariad and the reason why I keep reading it again and again is the way the characters are made to feel real just by talking to each other. There‘s an enormous amount of conversation in these books. Most of it os hillarious, and all of it defines the characters without the need to describe them directly.

      Oh, I agree. The conversations and character dialogue are quite excellent, and there is a great charm to their interactions. You are wrong about how Polgara and her sister were conceived. You are correct that Belgarath met Poldera while he was in wolf form. She was a wolf. She stayed with him even when he was in human form. One day, she saw how he changed forms and started to change forms. Thereafter (and unbeknownst to Belgarath at the time), she changed form to a human. Belgarath came across Poldera in her human form and eventually they had the twin girls.

    You know, I didn't notice the lack of swearing until you just pointed it out. I have read these multiple times since I first read them as a teenager, and I suppose every time I do I am so swept away and enchanted by them things like that didn't grab my attention. They are probably my number one favorite book series, my Star Wars of the book world.
    I like the Will and the Word, personally. It was simple and straightforward and to me realistic because the magic is of a divine origin. It comes from being a disciple of Aldur (or Torak), so it would make sense that it would be so simple. Wouldn't gods have 'word and it is done' kind of powers?
    If you like swearing and violence in your fantasy novels, why don't you give Jenna Moreci's The Savior's Champion a try? I think she overdid it on the swearing and underdid it on the world-building but some people adored TSS.
    Ty for you book report. I enjoyed watching it.

    • @kitsworld
      @kitsworld  7 месяцев назад +1

      It's not so much that I like swearing and violence. It's more that it jars me out of my immersion if people are purposely NOT doing it - because children might be reading! LOL. It's unrealistic.
      But I still enjoyed the books - made a whole video about them!
      I will always be a tough crowd, and I'm not apologising for that. I am a demanding reader, because I need total immersion, and emotional commitment in order to keep at it. I want the book to grip me by the throat and not let go. And I can't bear feeling patronised, pandered to, or spoken down to. (So, needless use of sex, violence, or swearing will piss me off too). I don't want it there just to tick a box. Use it when it makes sense - but don't stint, and keep it real.
      My favourite books of all time are the Deverry books by Katherine Kerr. I sincerely believe they are the BEST FANTASY BOOKS EVER WRITTEN! And they are criminally underappreciated and obscure. If you can find them, I recommend reading the first four in the cycle: Daggerspell; Darkspell; Dawnspell; Dragonspell. There are dozens more - and they are all one BIG story. But the first four books are very satisfying as a quadrilogy. They have plenty of "grownup" themes and writing, yet are not in any way forced. And the magic system is by far the best and most well thought through that I've ever encountered.
      I made a video about them, too. 😉😉
      Thank you for watching.

    So I thought that, allegorically speaking, Sendaria represented America and Arendia represented the UK, mainly because the Sendarian king was elected and most of America is farmland, while (other than the bravery over smarts thing) Arendia represents the torn nature of the UK (or are Sendaria and Arendia both English while Drasnia is America?) Obviously these are opinions. I've never talked to another adult who has read these, so I'm dying for other interpretations. Are all of the nations in the book supposed to be based on real nations? Would that make the Murgos Japanese and the Mallorans Chinese? or vise versa?

    • @kitsworld
      @kitsworld  3 года назад +1

      Thank you for watching, and for your comment. I think the best thing to do here is to simply go back to the original source. In "The Rivan Codex" Eddings explains the nations thusly:
      "The Sendars correspond to rural Englishmen, The Arends to Norman French, the Tolnedrans to Romans, the Chereks to Vikings, the Algars to Cossacks, the Ulgos to Jews, and the Angaraks to Hunnish-Mongolian-Muslim-Visigoths out to convert the world by the sword. I didn't really have correspondences in mind for the Drasnians, Rivans, Marags, or Nyissans. They're story elements and don't need to derive from this world."
      I hope this helps. I only skimmed the book briefly here, but couldn't find any reference to real-world correspondences for Murgos and Mallorians, although I can see where you are coming from in your question. It seems that Eddings didn't stick to any solid rule of basing all his fictitious nations on real ones, but simply did what was convenient here and there where needed. 😊

But I remember 'Belgarth swore fiercely' or one of them taking one (or more) of the Gods names in vain. So while there is some censoring it is no more than I would expect from adult romance novel written in the same time period ( the 1980's and 90's). That's the kind of thing I meant. He uses phrases like "the air turned blue" rather than just telling the reader what the character was saying. Thanks for watching. 😊

Ordering them around, cajoling them, not being able to be themselves, whereas apart from Murgodom and Anheg, the women were given free reign. I resolved that I'd never put myself in a position to be in a relationship with a Velvet/Ce'nedra/Pralla. Pol was adorable with Durnik, though there were times like, "Really, woman? The proles sre only on this world for a few decades. Let them enjoy life."

      Yes, I wonder how much of that was an echo of the dynamic between David Eddings and his wife, Leigh, who was instrumental in co-writing all the books, albeit without a credit for most of them. It wouldn't surprise me if the female characters derived most of their attitudes and behaviours from Mrs Eddings. 😊

    So sad to have recently learned that David and Leigh Eddings cruelly punished their adopted boy by locking him in a cage in their basement, restraining him so tightly it cut off circulation, causing tissue damage and a limp, and even had restraints on the toilet seat for God only knows what. On the day of the arrest of David and Leigh Eddings, the sheriff arrived to find Leigh Eddings beating the weeping, restrained 4yr old. He’d been there for 2 days that time. Luckily the little adopted boy was removed from the Eddings’ care for good after that, his one hand so inflamed he couldn’t even put on his shoes without help and bruised all over his body. Just sad to learn the Eddings’ we’re sickos like Marion Zimmer Bradley and Piers Anthony.

      Agreed. I only found out about all of that after I'd already posted this video, and it was a tough decision leaving the video up. But in the end I decided that everything I say here is an accurate expression of my thoughts and feelings about these books and their place in my reading history. So although I'll never be able to read an Eddings book again, or un-know what I now know, I don't want to eradicate the happy memories of my past. Also, being autistic I guess I'm able to separate my feelings and compartmentalise them in ways different from other people, so my original feelings are still valid (to me) despite new information.

      I started to read Eddings years before the murky past became public ( only after they both died) and before woke cancel culture became bon-ton.
      I still like the stuff they wrote and judge it on the product.
      When you take all the nastyness of the creator in account, one never can enjoy the music of Wagner, Bach or Beethoven. Or works of Tolkien, when you know he was a old fasioned Catholic, who happens to read the Latin miss out loud during the service, because he did not like it in English.
      When you as a consumer of product let yourself in with cancelculture, you and up with the narrow mindness of the early '50-ties, where a Catholic, did not by buy "Protestant" bread because the baker was non-Catholic or vise versa.

    Belgarath did never shagged the she-wolf in the shape of a wolf and sired a litter of semi-wolves.
    in the autobiography he made it clear that it would be immoral, only married Poledra when, after a few thousand years of compagnionship, she herself took the shape of a woman.
    In the chapter Drasnia of Castle of Wizardry Belgarath even scolds Garion for ...

    The review was going alright till about the 11 minute mark. These books were aimed at children, why you should think there should be swearing and sex in them is perplexing, they were perfectly aimed at their target market.

    • @kitsworld
      @kitsworld  Месяц назад

      This is an ancient review from a tiny channel that has not published any content for years. Why do you even care?
      But to answer your point, these books were NOT aimed at children specifically. They were written because Eddings wanted to explore certain themes about culture and religion. They are old-school 'high fantasy'. They are found in the fantasy section of the bookstore, not the children's section. They are for anyone who likes to read fantasy.
      To answer your question of why I'd want swearing and sex in them, it's because swearing and sex are alluded to throughout the books. To say, "now the character said some very sweary things, but I won't tell you what he said in case you are a child" is annoying. Just tell me what he said! (Or don't tell me he was swearing). The same with the sex. Sexuality is pervasive throughout the books. The characters are horny! But it's handled so coyly, again. it's annoying. If a thing happens in the story, tell me about it, don't pussyfoot around the edges of it!
      Also, I'm British. We are a BILLION times less scared and hysterical about sexuality than Americans. And, likewise, swearing is a big part of our culture and communication style. So the American tendency toward censorship (even self-censorship) and infantilization tends to grate!
      Finally, Eddings doesn't need defending from my review. It was a GLOWING review from a devoted reader who clearly loved and respected the books. I just had one little criticism. And it's funny that you're using the "children's books" defence, being that both David and Leigh Eddings were convicted child abusers before they even wrote the books! (Look it up. They served time!) If anything the notion of convicted child abusers targeting their product at children should be more troubling to you than an adult audience! 🤣🤣

The autobiographies were the first books I read by Eddings, and it works quite well like that because they are prequels and happen before the events of Pawn of Prophecy. But because they were written after the main books, some of the characters are more developed than they should be; they know things they shouldn't know, and there are a few minor inconsistencies. As for the lack of swearing and "shagging", i have to disagree. In this series, two of the main characters are children , Belgarion and C'Nedra, so surrounding them with that would have just come off as creepy.
    Tolkien doesn't use either in The Hobbitt and The Lord of the Rings, and they are unquestionable masterpieces and basically created the entire high fantasy genre.
    The highpoint of these 10 books is Eddings' characters. You truly befriend them, wish them well, and cheer for their successes.
    Like you so aptly said, its like sitting and listening to your grandfather tell you series of stories.
    Cheers

    • @kitsworld
      @kitsworld  8 месяцев назад

      Thank you for watching and for your kind words. We'll have to agree to disagree about the self-censorship though. Who cares if two main characters are kids? They're adolescent and horny, and Polgara spends a lot of time keeping them from shagging anything with a pulse. And they're fictional characters anyway. I'm sure they can handle living in a world in which sex happens naturally and without shame - rather than the American puritanical version. (And anyway, it's not so much the lack of sex scenes as the fact that Eddings breaks the fourth wall by reminding the reader that he's censoring content in case children might read it. As he does, too, with the swearing, or lack thereof). I just don't like feeling patronised. And I didn't like it any better when I was a child either! Also, it's weird (and very American) to use the presence of child (or in this case adolescent) characters as a rationale for sex and swearing to be censored, yet having no worries whatsoever about gratuitous violence - of which there is plenty in these books. Think about all the violent deaths and disfigurements dealt out in these books - sometimes by the child characters - and ask yourself if it isn't just a little hypocritical to find the presence of sexuality too "creepy" or swearing too adult. Just my thoughts, of course. Thanks for watching, and I'm glad you liked parts of my video. Cheers. K.

    I once made a religious experiment and read the whole shebang seven times through. Turns out, they make a whole lot more sense than any extant religion, are a whole lot shorter read than the Mahabharata, and I do not not have a religious bone in my body. The only thing that the experiment achieved is that I learned to feel plot holes like potholes in a road. However, I also learned that the books are very much like travel.

      Honestly, I haven't read them in years, and feel I have moved on from them. Back in the day I adored them, and read them through several times. So when I was experimenting with doing reviews in the early days of my channel they were what I used because I knew them well, and I spoke with the enthusiasm for them that I had felt back in the 90's. But I am so far removed now from that version of me, I wonder if I would have made the same review having read them just beforehand, or if I would even have reviewed them at all and instead simply made an unhaul video?! Anyway, thank you for watching, and for your comment. 😊

      It is amusing that Eddings makes a lot of fuss about Gods, while is is rather obvious he is an atheïst.
      Maybe that's why I like his work; he is placing Gods in the realm where they belong _ the realm of fantasy.

    • @zeideerskine3462
      @zeideerskine3462 Год назад

      If you read through these books again, you will see that the Eddingses are obviously antitheists in the way Buddhists are. That means that the accept the fact that gods exist but the good ones do not want or even like being worshipped while the ones that crave worship should be avoided like the plagues they are. I also love the way the characters break the fourth wall and comment on the story they are in.

      I consider the Sparhawk serie and Athaus as a bit of watering down the Belgarath serie, his Dreamers serie had lost all taste and skill.
      I was hoping the Eddings would create a newer and stronger book, but they died short after the Dreamers got finished.

    This guy doesn't know what he is talking about. Belgarath DID meet Poledra as a wolf, but Belgarath realised that having a litter of puppies would be impractical and so he went on his way, as a wolf. However, he later met Poledra as a woman and that was how the relationship started. Also, David Eddings never broke the fourth wall wrote that a child might pick up the book and read it.

      Hi, Avengers, thank you for correcting me on such an old video! 😜 I refer you to the comment I sent to the previous guy who corrected me. I'll address your additional issue at the bottom:
      "Sorry, Kamion, I made a mistake. This is an OLD video, posted as an experiment and not researched, scripted, or fact-checked. I have explained to COUNTLESS people in the comments that I am VERY SORRY for my error, and that it won't happen again. I was new to RUclips, trying out some prototype content, and have since moved-on. My channel is no longer about books and hasn't been for years, yet I still keep getting told-off about this ONE mistake. I seem to have got a lot of other stuff right, though, and MANY people have enjoyed my obvious and sincere enthusiasm and love for these books. I just wish people didn't keep picking on the one thing I got wrong. Or at least that they would read the comments and see that I've already addressed it and apologised many times. Anyway, thanks for watching. 😊"
      Avengers, the second point you made has been commented on less, so I can't remember if I've addressed it yet, so here goes: I haven't read these books in over 10 years, and hadn't at the time of filming the video. However, I was describing a generalised sense of fourth-wall-breaking, rather than specifics, and I think it happened mainly in the two autobiographies, although I can't say for sure because it's been so long. I did, however, spend the vast majority of the video singing the praises of these books and their author, and expressing my deep love for them. (This was before I discovered that David and Leigh Eddings had tortured and imprisoned a child in their basement, for which they both served prison time. My love for their work somewhat diminished after that discovery!)
      Anyway, I'm sorry you were so annoyed by my ancient video that you felt the need to come here and tell me off. I consider myself duly chastised. Now I have to go care for my dying mother - the reason I've been away from RUclips for months.
      I hope you can forgive my errors of the past. My video was well-intentioned.
      Kit.

      I'm sorry you feel that way. And I'm sorry that I mis-remembered one detail. However, in a 13-minute review, I discussed many aspects of the books - books which I admitted I hadn't read in so many years that they had actually grown mouldy - and it wasn't until nearly 10 minutes in that you spotted a mistake. So I guess I didn't do too badly. Also, to be clear, understanding and remembering are two different things. I understand the narrative perfectly well, thank you. I just misremembered a particular detail. Also, if we're going to be pedantic, you might want to work on your grammar, punctuation, and spelling before chastising someone for their work. Just saying. 😉

    • @kitsworld

      Thank you for your feedback. While I take on board what you say, I think perhaps it is unfair to characterise this as a "review". It's basically a video I shot in the early days of my channel before I really knew what I was doing. I needed something to film to test my cameras and figure out how to edit and upload videos, and I decided to talk about some favourite books. That's all. It's really just an unstructured, unscripted steam of consciousness. I also don't think anything in this video rises to the level of "big spoilers". This is an old video about old books, which were written by authors who are now thoroughly disgraced and disreputable. I'm sorry you didn't like it, but it's an obscure video by an even obscurer creator whose channel has changed twice since its creation. I don't discuss books anymore, and haven't done so for quite a while. I'm sorry this legacy video offended you, although it should be noted that the majority of viewers who have commented have agreed with its content and liked what I had to say. 😊
