Harry was my guy. He was so invested in the Cubs. Harry was first and foremost a HUGE fan. You could hear it and feel it every day in his broadcast. Boog is a national broadcast guy. I wonder if JD would also be better if he had a partner that was more invested in the team. I loved Harry and Steve Stone together. I do like the radio guys, Pat and Ron.
Harry would call the players out and didn't hide his disgust when the team was playing in an uninspired way. Boog just isn't like that. He tries to be an impartial observer. There's a lot to be said for that, but it's not what Cubs fans are drawn to.
Boog is not a Cub. Period! It's not a knock on him personally, but when you hear his voice broadcasting the Brewers in the playoffs, it kills whatever intimate connection he is trying to build with Cub fans.
Love JD, cannot stand boog. It's him talking only analytics , mcnuggets, and not caring one bit if the Cubs wins or lose. I've heard him get more excited over a brewers homering than a Cubs player.
Thanks guys, I listened to his entire interview, and I felt the same way. According to Boog, the manager has little more to do than fill out the batting order and then sit down in the dugout while the game is being played. Boog is clearly not a Cubs fan. He looks at himself as a national broadcaster first and not a Cubs broadcaster. I don't want him to become a Hawk Harrelson, but I do want him to represent the fans point of view a bit more. And his take on a "sense of urgency" is clearly off base.
Every time someone like Boog espouses a philosophy like that on the manager, I always want to ask them "then why doesn't the team save six or seven figures by not having a manager at all, and instead have some front-office intern making $40K a year sit in the dugout and just make lineup and in-game decisions by whatever WPA calculation a computer spits out?"
I started watching games in the 1960’s with Jack Brickhouse. To me, he was the Cubs. Then in the 1970’s my family moved to NYC and I watched Lindsey Nelson, Ralph Kiner, and Bob Murphy. They were a great announcing team for the Mets.
I don’t understand how you can call him elite. He’s not interesting, and sometimes just silly. I would rather listen to J.D., and he’s not really a Cubs fan either.
I honestly loved this one guys. I follow most podcasts and I do love when you guys interact with each other. Keep it up and I agree to a point with most views. Boog is a good play by play guy. The team is bad so there is not much to talk about and he os not going to bad mouth his boss and shoot himself in the foot. I wouldnt let a play by play guy dictate how I feel about the team. Some insight on the innerworkings and behind the scenes stuff is always cool.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one to feel this way. I live in another state so I watch the games through the MLB app. Anytime I watch I have to switch the audio to Pat Hughes call. Len Kasper did such a great job and Boog just doesn’t seem like a Cubs play by play guy. He doesn’t have the same passion for this team that the fans do.
Have Boog and Coom ever done a game together? I would love to hear Boog and Coom do a series together. Not because they would work well together, but because Boog might learn a thing or two
Boog is a much better announcer in venues other than the Cubs. He was great in the WS, not so much as a Cubs announcer. He seems to be more interested in other venues than he is in Cubs games since he finds so many other things to talk about during Cubs games.
Brickhouse was the best with a Harry a close second. You could tell right away that Jack lived and died with the Cubs. He may not have been the best broadcaster ever, but he truly loved the team.
Boog does not know how to broadcast a baseball game the way he does it is boring to me. He spends too much time talking about other things like what he's seeing on his computer. I like Harry caray and Pat Hughes who broadcast the game about the game. It makes it a lot more exciting and interesting and fun to follow
Interesting discussion. Jack Brickhouse was my childhood Cub’s voice. Said more with less. Casper & Boog have that fake, corporate voice. Very unauthentic. That’s my humble opinion.
He's probably the worst announcer in baseball. Can't stand to hear or look at him. That's why Steve Stone and Chip Carey is no longer with the Cubs because the Cubs brass doesn't like someone in the booth calling a spade a spade.
Great show, you guys nailed it. I watch all the cubs games on mlbtv. I use the option to listen to the game on the radio side. Pat Ron and the boys are amazing. I cannot listen to boog.
Sam is 100% on point when he says Boog "talking to the fans like that is a little much." What if your electric company was completely average but showed no sense of urgency in improving during a power outage? Or a police department with no sense of urgency in a criminal crisis? Or your car mechanic when your needs matter? Good businesses and good industries have a sense of urgency bred into their culture. And while I hate using such corporate language myself, it is the truth. If the Cubs don't have a sense of urgency, maybe it's time I just cave and watch the Dodgers. 'Cus let me tell you something...when they lost two NLDS in a row, and their only WS trophy in recent times was from a 60 game season, they felt a sense of urgency to miss miss on Ohtani.
Harry Caray will always be indelibly the Cubs for me. I loved him since I was kid watching Cubs games in the ‘90’s. The Cubs have the best booth currently, it’s just not BOOG and JD. It’s the HOF Pat Hughes, The all-star Ron Coomer and Zach Zaidman.
according to sciambi, there can never be a player that has just checked out and doesn't care any more. because in his world, urgency doesn't exist. that, is idiotic. I seriously lost a lot of respect for him after hearing his idiotic take that he thinks is smart, while also demeaning fans. It's not just a "bad take" Matt. It's a horrible take.
Schambi is just another talking head . He has no allegiance to the Cubs or any other team . His whole broadcast revolves around the bullshit stories of his career and his experiences with a little bit of the Cubs game thrown in as filler . I don't give a damn about all of the highlights of his career , I just want to hear about the Cubs and their opponent that day and about what's happening on the field . Let him write a book about himself and if anyone gives a shit they can read all about Boog , he can also include some of the dead air from his broadcasts . I was really disappointed when they hired this guy and that hasn't changed . There are a good number of qualified people loyal to the Cubs that would have been better choices but Ricketts in his infinite wisdom chose to go the national route with an unaffiliated celebrity . I dropped Marquee in the middle of last year so I really don't care anymore but it was one of the reasons for that decision . Listening to Pat and Ron on the radio is so much more informative , except when Zaidman fills in . All in all I just don't understand the logic or fascination with the Schambi hire . So disappointed !
The Cubs’ TV team is ok. They’re professional. But I believe the radio team may be the best in baseball. I usually listen to the games instead of watching. With Sirius XM, I also listen to other teams’ games, so I know what I’m talking about.
I'm way too young to have heard Jack Brickhouse, and my Cub fandom didn't begin until the 90s when Harry was, unfortunately, past his prime. So, for me, the "golden age of Cubs baseball" will always be Len and JD on TV and Pat and Ron on the radio.
@@d.j.8059 I thought Len & Bob were a far better duo together than J.D. I actually think J.D. is best with Pat, then Boog. They groove with his sense of humor. Len I think is best actually with Steve Stone, even though they rarely team up on Sox broadcasts.

I have tried and tried to give Boog a chance hoping I would grow to like him. It just hasn't happened? He belongs on ESPN. He just isn't a Cubs fan and you can tell. Like you guys said I want to feel like I'm listening to a Cubs broadcast and I don't with him. Pat and Ron are the best! Wish we had a duo like that for the TV broadcast. Go Cubs! 💙

I’m pretty sure that if this team was winning, then you guys would be singing a different tune. I guess we have to agree to disagree on this one. I love listening to Boog and JD. If the Cubs got anywhere close to sounding like insufferable homers like the freaking White Sox did for decades, I would be embarrassed. These guys bring professionalism and humor at the same time. I’m glad that the Cubs have one of the best.
Sam would you consider the Bears an urgency. So, it does exist. All bears broadcast considered that after 4 loses in a row. To me urgency means in order for us to be better, there has to be a change, the same don't cut it.
The Cubs haven’t had the sense of urgency since they won the World Series in 16 . The next 2 following years the kind of just settled , they had good years but didn’t go for it like in 16 . They lost that sense of urgency after they won the WS .
I, also, was pleased when I heard the news in 2021 that the Cubs had chosen Boog over Chris "Empty Suit" Meyers. However, it's been four years, and Boog has simply not fully taken on the role of "Voice of the Cubs", and I think he never will. Part of it is h, part of it is Marquee seemingly wanting him to be a polished, national "corporate" broadcaster, but whoever's fault it is, it's not good when I turn on a game and say "oh, Beth Mowins is filling in today! Nice!"...much less the joy of a Pat Hughes fill-in day.
Boog and JD are nice people, but I don't like them as the Cub's TV broadcasting team at all. The team that i enjoyed was Len Kasper and Bob Brenley. They had great chemistry!
Not a fan of Boog. But in his defense, I didn't like Len a first either. It took a couple of season for him to grow on me I keep hoping Boog will eventually grow on me like Len did. but so far no dice. and I am being to lose hope that Boog will eventual grow on me.
If you don't have a good product to sell people are not going to buy it. Was Harry Carey the Cubs didn't always have the best team but I never missed a game because Harry made every play interesting. It seems boob talks about everything except for the game in front of him. With Harry win or lose he always made the Cubs games exciting.

I am blessed to be old enough to watch Cubs games with legendary broadcaster like Jack Brickhouse and Harry Carey and who could ever fault the love Ron Santo had for the team. The Boog needs to leave and simply call games on ESPN or FOX or wherever because as you both said he is simply not a Cubs man. He annoys me and I am much older than you and older than Boog as well so I do not feel the need to watch my words. Pat Hughes and Ron Coomer are both great Cubs callers and I wish they were on Marquee instead of Boog. I really do not mind having Jim Deshaies in the booth since he can give an actual pitcher's perspective. I simply question the entire existence of Marquee but that is from an older fan used to watching the Cubs on WGN for most of my life.
Len Kasper's nasal voice I couldn't take. He's good on the radio, however, for some reason. Not a Boog guy at all - for the Cub. He's good away from the Cub though.
The Cubs have the worst announcers in baseball. The TV announcers crap all over baseball traditions and the radio announcers like laughing at people who are incontinent.
Boog CAN BE and COULD HAVE BEEN a great intimate voice of the Cubs. His jovial nature and great calling could've been a modern day-Harry. But his continued connection to ESPN, effing off on Sundays to go do Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN-Radio, and just missing alot of dates in favor of other things or days off. When Pat fills in, it makes you wonder why Pat (or Ron for that matter) don't just do double-duty and be the full-time TV & Radio team simultaneously like the old school did. Beth... shouldn't even be in the chat. These are the reasons why I defended the Sox when they let Benetti go. Too many days off, and what made it worse is Len Kasper & Steve Stone were BETTER on-air than Benetti. Pick a lane guys, and be the voice for your team, and stop trying to be free agents constantly. EDIT: Just wanna say they should've never let Chip Caray & Steve Stone walk in 2004. They were the voices of the future post-Harry. They'd still be doing it today if it wasn't for HOW HONEST THEY WERE. People forget they were ran off for how critical they were with the lackadaisical nonsense on that 2004 team that cost the team the playoffs.
Boog sucks he talks about everything but the team he was hired to cover .Boog is a national baseball announcer .I'd rather have Pat Hughes a real lover of the Cubs ,TV announcers we have are brutal..
How many times did boog interupt the interviewer also? He def like the smell of his own farts

Boog comes off as a baseball know-it-all, especially when he tries to talk about pitching. You can almost feel JD's embarrassment for the guy.

Not a fan of Boog.
Boog sucks he talks about everything but the team he was hired to cover .Boog is a national baseball announcer .I'd rather have Pat Hughes a real lover of the Cubs ,TV announcers we have are brutal..
