I had seen him live three times in 1991-93, but when I saw him perform "I Believe In You" (and do the solo himself no less) in 1994, I noticed the uptick in the quality of his performance relative to the previious years. Later in the year, I saw him do the best band version of "Every Grain Of Sand" I've ever heard (I have a recording). He leans in with a quite impassioned vocal. The acoustic Supper Club shows of November 1993 through the departure of drummer Winston Watson in August 1996 comprise a high watermark in his live performances. There is circulating pro-shot video of two shows from August 1996 that bear out as much.
thanks for the revue john ,, i was lucky enough to see bob a couple of times in london on the 81 tour , first time i had seen him ,, remember being blown away by slow train coming live , 40 years ago this year , blimey where has the time gone ,,
Fantastic review. i have been enthralled by this have the 2 cd and prob going to get the LP version! I have listened to the whole release on amazon’s streaming site and it is incredible! Thank you for your reviews in general - I and many appreciate your views opinions
I think we are in the LIVE RECORDS ERA !! The Live albums now are so good with the new technology we have. Look at the Beatles Live at the Hollywood Bowl for example and of course this one !! There are lots of Live albums out which deserve to be remixed...like the wings over america ! They should put that one out andf lots of others !!! cheers from austria
Didn't know you'd reviewed this, John. Watched Trouble No More dvd on BBC 4 this eve. Such a curio, with the sermons in between the songs. The songs, the band, the performance, all bloody great!
wonderful review John! I, too, have this version of Trouble No More and I was blown away by the quality. I hope to get a copy of the DVD without having to purchase the more expensive version. Thanks again!!
Thanks Paul. It's a bit mystifying why the box is so expensive. Having said that you are getting a lot of new stuff inside. I would pay 80 quid but not 140!
Thanks for the review! I’m going to pick up Trouble No More now since you really seemed to enjoy it in your appraisal. I’ve just been getting into Dylan’s Gospel period, really good stuff.
Thank you for your fine review, John. I realize I am late watching this one. Bob Dylan's gospel recordings are my favorites of all of his work, and I pre-ordered the deluxe box set with the two bonus San Diego 1979 concert cds from bobdylan.com as soon as it was announced. Although it was delivered in November, I waited to enjoy it until New Year's Eve, as it was purchased in celebration of our 29th wedding anniversary. My wife and I had a local gospel singer and dear friend sing "When He Returns" at our wedding ceremony on December 31, 1988. I resisted temptation to read or watch any reviews throughout November and December, even knowing your review would be special, because I wanted to come to the box set with a completely open mind. I've been so absorbed in the box set since then, that I didn't return to watch the review until I was reminded to do so by your wonderful recent review of Planet Waves. I do hope that the deluxe box set drops in price sometime soon and you can pick it up. Discs 3 and 4 feature many alternate studio takes, rehearsal run-throughs, and soundcheck performances. Discs 5 through 8 contain near complete concerts from 1980 and 1981. The hardbound books are expanded in the deluxe box, and the DVD is nice, but it is the cds that are special. Thank you again for your excellent review video. --Michael Ernst, Berkeley, CA
mpmternst thanks Michael! What a splendid way to bring in the new year! I am on the lookout for the box (self portrait one too)...still bit too pricey...cheers
I purchase the 2 CD versions because I can hear the full releases on AmazonMusicHD for $7.99 a month. Super value as you can download any album to a device and play with the Amazon Music player. Great for travel!
Dylan considers SHOT OF LOVE as one of his favorite releases. The SPRINGTIME IN NYC Bootleg Series #16 includes 7 tracks from SHOT OF LOVE sessions and several legendary tracks from INFIDELS includes that legendary band version of BLIND WILLIE MCTELL
I have had bad luck, unfortunately, most of the times that I've gone to see Bob Dylan. One of the times was on his 81' tour in Madison Wisconsin - we had heard good things beforehand, but sad to say, the show was mainly a cacaphony of discordant sounds out of sync with Bob's whiny vocals. None of my friends or acquaintances were happy with the performance, except for a decent rendition of "Every Grain Of Sand"...It always frustrated me how erratic Bob's concerts were, because I knew that he was capable, and I would occasionally see clips of inspired Dylan performances here and there...Happily, in 2012, I finally saw a good performance during his "Tempest" tour, so mission, in the end, accomplished! ....Nice review, and that's a cool jacket John - you look like Eddie Cochran!
Very interesting review John which I was looking forward to! They have done great things with these bootleg collections. The booklet looks great. I really enjoy this period of Dylan's and think Slow Train Coming is one of his best. This is definitely one for the Christmas list!
great review john like always-i was interesting in dylan mainly about the lps of 60s-i have 6-from the 70s only blood on the tracks is in my collection, perhaps i was wrong
ok no any answer from you any more not good that, its offensive for me to answer to all the good people here except me .is your right but all so different now
Again a great review .Alas as much as I love Bob and I’m a total obsessive...I can’t handle his God stuff.Nothing to do with the subject matter( each to their own) it’s the songs and lumpen playing that gets me.I recently bought “ saved” in preparation for this release but only played it a handful of times.I don’t know what it is??On saying that I loved when he returns from STC like up there with my favs.Maybe it’s the gospel backing I dunno.Anyway my point is I’m still waiting to buy this.Your review has made me maybe re-evaluate..cheers
Nice review John, this sounds like a worthy release. I don't actually have or even know the Saved album, but am an admirer of the Slow Train LP, which I only heard for the first time last year. I like some of the material on Shot of Love too. This one will go on the list. I'm currently reading the book A Simple Twist of Fate by Andy Gill, well worth a look if you don't have it. Cheers, James
Cheers James. I saw the vinyl version today in Budapest but was too pricey so I am ordering from Amazon.de! Saved has some great moments and a couple of sublime melodies.
It's a real shame that this is all live stuff, but at least this will save me some money. I enjoyed this period of Dylan's career and might well have bit if it was studio sessions.
I would normally agree that studio outtakes are preferable to live stuff but this would be an exception....the band is very tight and in many cases the live versions are even better than the album versions. You might be surprised!

Thank you for the review. I was lucky enough to see the 79 and 81 tours in Montreal. Both shows were great.

To be honest this was my favorite period from Dylan. No matter your religious views this was some of his best music. I was thinking of the 2CD set.
Thanks James!

Spin it on, Getting Closer for sure
The box set is great! I am sure that you can get the whole set now for a lot cheaper than you mentioned.
Great review. This is one of my favorites in the bootleg series.
