@@bdeithrick :) Ah now don't be too hard on Bob, I was very disappointed with his ID4 GTX review which said hardly anything at all about the car, but was more a monologue rant about public charging infrastructure. 'Its just another trim' is incorrect. AWD with dual motor makes a big difference and he made no mention of how or why. I'm interested in AWD for traction capability not performance. Cheers

Viewing the video a second time, I did wonder why I didn't have the keyless entry... So I went into the menus and found the option to activate it.
So it was previously set to only unlock the door I touched with key in hand and now it is truly 4 door unlock when nearing the car (without pressing keybuttons)
So thanks for the video to get me to activate that option.

Ok, quite some good remarks by Cindy...
For me and my wife the seats are fine and comfortable enough. The non illuminated toch buttons on the center panel are quite stupid as you do have to search for the hearing options. The suspension for some roads in Belgium can be 'choppy' (as many roads are concrete slabs of five metres lengths). The media system asking at each start of you want to be online or offline is really stupid - VW should make that dumb question disappear. Of course you always want be online.
Getting in and out of the car is easy as it higher than a regular sedan. The Id3 is quite more of a SUV height. I never had tinted windows before and it offers more privacy and if you forget something on the back seat it isn't visible from outside the car. Range is more than sufficient for us. Sound proofing makes it a quiet ride although the all season tires we have are a bit loud.
The choice of some plastics in the interior are a bit shabby for VW standards but let's be honest about it, I touched those plastics just a couple of times in the beginning and that's it. Nobody touched or feels those plastics more than couple of times. But the parts that you do touch all the time are indeed better and decent enough.
The combination of driving assistance aids (cruise control + lane assist + distance to car in front) works really well so that I drive quite a distance more relaxed. It even slows for roundabouts, drives around it (I do the steering of course) and after the roundabouts of resumes the set cruise speed. All very nicely done. However sometimes it gets alarmed to easily by a cyclist or a parked car on the right side of the road and slows down the car abrupt. That is a little annoying to me and the other cars behind me.
I did say that range was sufficient for our family but in the winter you see the range dropping quite faster than expected. So driving a 11km real distance drops the range (prediction) by 20km. If you do drive a longer distance this seems to level better for actual distance and drop in range guesstimate. Our Hyundai ioniq 2018 is more consistent for range guesstimate in winter but the Id3 had much better heating (very much appreciated by my wife).
The three kids love the space on the back seats. But a little bit more space in the trunk would be good.
    Overall a good car...

    Lots of good information.
My wife has similar “height” issues.
The seat will definitely be an issue. Also we both enjoy the heated seats in our Golf which would be a shame to have to drop down to something less effective.
She also drives very few miles.
Overly complex controls would put her off driving too.
I’ll m due to change in two years and the iD3 is something that I was thinking about. Seems the obvious choice. The Kona is also well up there. But I see there are lots of annoying issue with the VW, which mostly I’ve picked up from yourself. Thanks for the real world feedback.

About the seats. My wife, who is only slightly taller than Cindy (1.60m) loves the seats. Moreover the ID.3 is the first car we both drive without having to adjust the seat height after the other drove the car. In my previous car she had to raise the seat to the max in order to get a good driver's view causing me hit the head liner every time I entered the car after she drove it. With the ID.3 we only have to adjust the interior rear view mirror when we switch

I'm 181 cm tall and I got backpain really easily in the ID.3. Driving to the Netherlands was quite a challenge (from Munich). I now drive the Fiat 500e, no backpain, even on those long drives. For my wife the exact same thing as well. Although the suspension of the ID.3 is much more comfortable than the 500e, my back doesn't hurt in the Fiat, so overall it's better for longer journeys.

It made me realise how important seats are for car comfort, more important than suspension, sound insulation etc. I drove the ID.3 for six months btw, and I never got a comfortable seating position on long journeys. I'm not sure why though.

Well, about heat...depends from person to person...i had a really bad episode of shivers (had to drive "now" and didn't change my clothes (as from inside home) but once i got out from house toward car i was freezing/shivering with no control) and the heater in the seat made it posible for me to get going, i mean driving - but also, after 8-10 min i was uncomfortable (it was on max lvl) so i had to reduce it :) But if i'm wearing my "all-time" jeans, 2 "stars" out of 3 is max i can go with for more than few minutes :)

  • @richard--s
    @richard--s 2 года назад +1

The lane assist camera is high up, so it can see the lines better right in front of the car.
That should also help in the fog. But well, Chris said, it works only over 60 km/h.
So keep an eye on the green lane assist symbol. When it's not green any more, lane assist is off.
But many thanks for your thoughts about this car. The other reviews are about kWh and seconds to hundred and that stuff, but almost nothing about how practical the car is, does the trunk feel big or rather small and so on.
How is the ride. Almost no one really said that the model y suspension feels hard over bumps, or the steering of the Y is too direct, to nervous at higher speeds, that's important. And it's important to know that the ID3 feels good even on bumpy roads or cobblestones. And so on.
So, many thanks for your in depth review about things that we never hear about for any car. (Was that too big? No, that was just right, these topics are not often covered. Well, even less than not often ;-)
    Thanks!

I’d still be driving them if this one area was better. I’m 188cm, my wife is 150. Other cars are doing a better job on seats, come on Volkswagen these are the things you need to fix along with the quality of the interior of the newer models, I expect more from you.

On another level, smaller bodies have a larger area relative to their volume - area increases with a second power but volume with a third. An elephant has an easier time in stone cold African nights than a mouse and will overheat less easily too.

Cindy is not that short (i'm only 4cm taller, so maybe i'm biased) but I have to tell both of you about this magical place called Queensland (Australia) where no one want to pre heat their car (I have seat heaters on one of my cars and never used them).

    • @daveamies5031
      @daveamies5031 2 года назад

@timemachine_194 It would be if you could buy one, unfortunately EV's are still more than double the price of a comparable ICE vehicle, but I'm hoping someone will spot the opportunity to dominate the Australian car market by selling an affordable EV, our local car sales industry is complaining about the lack of sales in the last few years but most of the EV's available in Europe are not available here.

I had this car and the Polestar 2. The infotainment system on the ID3 is from 2005. Honestly compared to the Polestar the difference is night and day. I didn't at first think it mattered much to me, but after a month in the Polestar i found the ID3 very irritating.

If I remember correct you have a 1st Plus? I have a 1st Max, and the seats are way better. Electriv adjustment, massage and adjustable length to satify peaople with short or long legs. Maybe you shold swap the passanger seat with one of those?

No, same seats, just adjustable. Same length. We had one for a while.

I am surprised there is no mention of the ID3 App as HUGE negative - specifically that only one person can be logged into the car at a time- how crazy is that for a family car which may be shared by two or more people!! If you are watching VW PLEASE FIX THIS ASAP.

Thx Cindy & Chris! 👍🏼 I drive an ID3 as well (10 months so far). My question: with the cars available now, would you buy it again?
I have the ID3 via the VWFS Abo and I have to say I would not go for the ID3 again, I will give the car back when my new one arrives. There are lot of pros similar that Cindy & you mentioned, but this piano black (I know you have white interior), the software bugs (I have 2.1SW), the fact that after one trip in rain the ‚black‘ back of the car looks like I did not wasch it for months, the seats I don‘t like either, the hard plastic everywhere, it just looks cheap, but it is not 😦 well, it was worth the try, first EV, but it will likely not be VW anytime soon again

I have the same experience and agree with your conclusion. There are loads of good things about this car but we're having to change cars (will get a Polestar or EV6) and would rather keep our 6 year old golf GTE and part exchange the ID.3 than part exchange the GTE and keep the ID.3. My green conscience will prickle me for some of the longer journeys in the GTE but 80% of the time that battery is big enough (usually 35-45 kms range) and the interior and feel of the car is sooooo much better.

Dirty hatch door is just a matter of physics, it's the same on, let's say, a Golf. However, if your point is that it is extra vivid on black paint - than i'm not a fan of black hatch too.

If lane assist kicks on at 60, I assume you mean 60 km/h (37 mph)? Does Germany have a lot of two lane highways that are under 60 km/h? Most two lane highways in the US are like 35-50 mph. Most over 40 mph. It sounds like she could see the lanes, but barely, so it's possible the camera could see the lanes. She just seems to like the extra confidence of having the system to back her up. Personally I can't stand lane keeping assistants. Lane centering is nice, but lane keeping is just super annoying.
