Rick Allen the drummer, lost his left arm in a car accident, when he was only 21 years old. He was close to depression, but his group said that no one would replace him, and they waited for him until he could recover and learn to play again. True loyalty and friendship.

Showing my age, but this song still reminds me of listening to my Hysteria tape on my middle school trip to Washington DC. Magical times.

Ya, I was there (in their Milwaukee show) and they started the show with that same round stage and the curtain dropping at the start of the show! Tesla was just getting really big and opened up for them. So much fun!

That was a monster hit in my high school years. Got tons of radio play, and I did buy that cassette, a few years later.
I remember their first hit song, ‘Rock of Ages’, and sitting around talking about it in my junior high art class, and debating what the first few words of the song were.

I was there at Monsters Of Rock at Castle Donington, UK in 1986 when Rick Allen made his first gig after the accident so only a small crowd of 40,000ish 😁 I'd seen them a number of times before and after. They're an awesome band live 👊

Oh boy! My daughter, who's now 33, went to see Cheap Trick, Foreigner, and Def Leppard about 15 or 16 years ago. I gave her $60 to get me a concert t-shirt. I got up for work the following morning and found a sleeveless t-shirt on the back of a chair. When I got home, I asked for my change, she said "what change? Now I had t-shirts from seeing Queen, Billy Squier and Styx that I might've paid $60 for all of them back in the eighties.
Plus while she was at the concert I get a text "Dude the drummer only has one arm, I only want to have one arm!" Kids.

Rick Allen (drums) joined Def Leppard when he was only 15 yrs of age around 1979 after their original drummer (Tony Kenning) quit the band... Their manager Peter Mensch recalled that Allen was clearly the best musician in Def Leppard, despite his young age. When Def Leppard were signed, Rick Allen's parents had to co-sign his record contract cos he was only 16 at the time and went on tour w/ the band in 1980.
After the car accident in late 1984 that cost Rick Allen his left arm, their producer Mutt Lange visited him in the hospital and apparently, told Allen that he could learn to play drums again... Def Leppard recalled visiting Allen in the hospital and he told them that he had been reading about technology that could be set up to allow him to play drums again w/ 1 arm and 2 legs... They thought he was too heavily medicated but he was serious... Joe Elliott (vocals) was adamant; Rick Allen would not be replaced... he was a friend and a brother and they owed it to him to try get back on drums.
After building a custom electronic drum kit in 1985, Rick Allen spent months relearning to play drums... Meanwhile, Def Leppard's sessions for their 4th album 'Hysteria' were fruitless and racked up over a million Pounds in studio time... In 1986, Def Leppard decided to play some live gigs and Rick Allen came through solidly on drums (A backup drummer was hired but he wasn't necessary... Allen was ready)
Def Leppard played the UK 'Monsters of Rock' festival in '86 and the crowd gave Rick Allen a huge welcome back... He was nicknamed 'Thunder God' after that run.
'Hysteria' was finally released in 1987 but sales stalled at 3 million copies after 3 singles (Def Leppard needed to sell 5 million copies just to recoup their debts) ... But in the Summer of '88, the 4th single 'Pour some sugar on me'... became a massive hit and 'Hysteria' would become Def Leppard's most successful album selling 12 million copies in the US alone.
Tragically, it was the last album to feature Steve Clark (guitar)... the charismatic guitarist struggled w/ alcohol and drug abuse and passed away in early 1991... Def Leppard recorded their 5th album 'Adrenalize' w/ guitarist Phil Collen playing all of Steve Clark's parts on the record in his memory.

I was working security at a department store when this came out. I wasn’t allowed to make purchases while I was working. For 8 hours, I walked past the display rack and saw customer after customer buy this album. As soon as my shift was over, I went out to my car, changed my shirt and went back in to get my copy.
I bought it on CD so I couldn’t listen to it on the way home (my ‘67 Mustang only had cassette). As soon as I got home, I put it in the tray and kicked the volume to 11.
Fantastic album from start to finish.

This song is one that will always get me up and moving! I'm not sure what it is about this song, but it really gets me each time! There were people who criticized Rick Allen for his 'limited' abilities. I got pissed off at that! Then you do better!! It's funny that you should say he played like an Animal since that's one of the songs from the album Hysteria. A great album!

He was adamant from the start that he would work out how to use his foot to play his left arm parts. Always a fun song and actually the song that exploded the Hysteria album that to that point had not sold that well. Great fun song but they have so many better. It was kind of their More Than Words moment that Extreme had. They were my favourite band at the time but this was their last great album for me. They were never the same after the brilliant Steve Clark died and of course the advent of grunge did for them for a time as well. They're still performing now and are a great live band to this day but we need to introduce you to some earlier stuff. I read their book in the late eighties written by a photographer that had toured with them. It's a great book. Rick Allen, the drummer, was just 15 when he joined the band.
