There is something special about Louis Cato’s ability to captivate an audience. During this Tiny Desk, he expresses his belief that music is most powerful when experienced in a live setting - it’s there that we build community. With rhythmic strumming and a winning smile, he draws us into his honest, thoughtful and vulnerable storytelling.
Not only does Cato sing and excel at multiple instruments, he holds his own on the other side of the microphone, producing, mixing and, most visibly, serving as bandleader for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. If this is your first encounter with Cato, you’ll quickly get a sense of his immense musicality. He’s the type of musician who inspires other musicians and, as such, is very much in demand. Indeed, at the Tiny Desk, it's a fellowship of good vibes as Cato and his band - bassist Jeremy McDonald, guitarist Randy Runyon and drummer James Williams - guide us through an introspective journey of the love we have for others, ourselves and humanity.

Beautiful. Some say all musical instruments are made to mimic beautiful human voice and human sound articulation. I realize that when I hear a voice like this.

Louis is such an underrated musician. He's done some incredible session work. Bass with the Late Show, drums with Marcus Miller and Theo Katzman. And to top it all of, a voice like that..

Louis is truly incredible. But "underrated" is a very overused word. He has a fantastic creative platform on Colbert, and this is the NPR Tiny Desk which showcases world-class talent. So, no. Not really underrated.

Absolutely loving this live instrumentation! The whole vibe. And Randy just kicked out up a whole nother notch. You guys have a great collective, holistic vibe. I really which I could find these lyrics somewhere 😊😊 8 minutes in and so likely to finish/share
And the switch up to international/worldly vibes at the end, omg Desperado much?! Had me thinking mariachis all over again. My soul had been touched sir Louis and gentlemen.

For "Unsightly Room" alone I would have considered this a good day. But more than the lyrics, I found the performance to be a touchstone of empathy. In listening I felt uncomfortably heard, and loved anyway. Thanks NPR for these introductions made with such care. Not since a house concert decades ago given by Vance Gilbert have I heard such meaning and intimacy conveyed with such delicate skill in a live performance! Now off to collect the Louis Cato catalog!

I´ve just read Louis Cato Wikipedia page, and noticed he was born in Lisbon (not my city (Oporto) but my country) then I saw he´s not portuguese, and I got a little dissapointed but at the same time relieved because I would consider myself uneducated for not knowing such a talent from "my country". Great tiny desk, keep it up brother Louis and his band.
