  • Kayak fishing for snapper, snapper fishing Melbourne Port Phillip Bay. But that''s not all were also targeting whiting, flathead, pinkies and more. In this video im fishing with good friend Mark Moseley and we happen to stumble upon a nice school of snapper. Both catching a snapper each around the 3 kilo mark.
    Gotta love kayak fishing Melbourne in Port Phillip Bay on my hobie Pro Angler 14 when the conditions are nice and flat. Mark was fishing on his Dragon Kayak. Salt water kayak fishing. hobie kayak saltwater kayak fishing red snapper
    Apologies for some footage which was missing, it happens at times in the chaos of trying to land good fish and not having a dedicated film crew.

This time around was just a silly error, the strike has strong and unexpected and i panicked and turned the camera off. was spewing when i realised i did. anyway gives me an excuse to go and catch another and get it on camera this time.

    Long review today, first let me say cracking session👍by no means am i telling you what to do, these are just observations, your allowed 4 rods in the water while fishing in the bays so use 4 rods😉 in the front you have star ports like me, now in front of those i have on each side a berkely quick set rod holders but use the triangular scotty bases then i lashed out and bought 2 H rail heavy duty and 1 light star ports the light 1 is for swapping from side to side when drifting (in place of these but at more cost you can use the better ram ball mounts) the quick sets are cheap at around $25 each + scotty mount i also use the scotty mounts for my downrigger 😉 ideally you have 3 permanent rod holders on each side plus 1 movable (counting the moulded ones in the rear) while your at anchor or just drifting try to always have atleast one rod with a sp sitting about a metre of the bottom, the rear moulded rod holders are mainly used when trolling at which time you can utilize either the H rail holders or quick sets (this takes practice as you have to have the 2 rear lines out further or in closer than the other 2 and your turns need to be gradual to avoid crossed lines also drift will create havoc if you slow or stop) when im in the bays or offshore this is my goto practise and once i hookup i set the hook then put the rod back in the holder with enough drag set that i dont get spooled and set to winding in all other rods and put those in storage out of the way, then i return to the loaded rod an fight away😉 although this is not always possible 😔 with kingfish you cant put the rod down, you have to get control of the fish then you can proceed with the other rods while fighting the fish😉 reviews done but i have 2 more things to add first a read afn.com.au/a-lively-approach-live-baiting-for-snapper/ written by a guy (im told) from www.vyak.net/index.htm i would encourage you and anyone that's serious about kayaking to join this forum as it's full of a weath of information and like minded people that are very very helpful 👍 hope this helps you in furthering your kayak fishing enjoyment 😉

      Thanks Peter, some great tips in there. Ill make sure to read the article and join the forum. Always happy to learn a few extra tips. That day we both packed minimal and light. originally we were going to target squid then flick plastics but the squid action was dead. Thats why we both got catches on such light gear. Some good quality there mate. I agree about Altona ramp. It's the closest ramp to me but I avoid it like the plague. Those snapper would have been great fun on soft plastics.

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  4 года назад +1

      Thanks Darren, yeah when it hit the soft plastic i wasn't expecting it and it took of, which is much different to watching a snapper hit when using bait and your watching the rod buckle over. Spewing i didn't get the footage but had to prioritize landing the fish first. Was amazing fun. The very next day i went out and put some heavier line on my rod as that snapper really tested out there gear. Yeah Altona boat ramp was nuts that particular day they were parking kilometers away. would have been a big line up unless launching before 3am which i really struggle to do. Plus it can get pretty stressful down there. Hope you have been fishing and doing well.

      Not much I'm afraid mate. Weather hasn't been great on my few days off. Did try and get out last week, but didn't last long. Got the biggest skate I have ever seen in my life which took all six rods out of action, snapped one of em, wrapped line around the prop shaft and put an end to the day. Other shit happened aswell. One of those days! Weather looks terrible this week again. 😔 So maybe the week after.

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  4 года назад +1

      Yeah the weather has been so frustrating the last couple of months. I too have had some days out there were everything seems to go wrong. Just means we will be back out again soon to redeem ourselves. Thats no good about the line being wrapped around the shaft its always horrible when that happens.

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  4 года назад +1

      Hi Joseph, It a very entry level sounder. Lowrance hook 2 4X .I have very mixed feelings about it. Yes in shallow water under 5 meters it really struggles. Just showing a choppy screen, forcing me just to use it for depth and temprature. However last Sunday fishing around 6 meters it was actually really good and picked up multiple schools of fish including the snapper. Id love to upgrade to the Lowrance HDS-7 or elite T1-2 7. Might be a project for me in a couple of months time. I hope that helps.

      Usually size 4/0 hooks, we were also using premade patanoster rigs. I believe these were the ones we were using www.rigmastertackle.com.au/product/whiting/

      fishingmad is 4/0 fine for pinkies they’re not too big are they ?

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  4 года назад

      Yeah for pinkies 4/0 is probably a little big. Have a look at those whiting rigs I linked in the last comment they are perfect rigs for pinkies, whiting, flathead. I have caught many fish with them. During peak snapper season I go a little bigger targeting some bigger fish. I hope that helps. You'll see that I use that same rig here ruclips.net/video/VEXa7FMDf_Q/видео.html

    how do you dispatch your snapper?

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  4 года назад

      I never show dispatching fish on camera, but usually spike the fish then run the knife behind its gills to properly bleed it out. Then straight onto ice, my mates esky had the ice in it. so they went in there.

      I have been using the Savage Gear Stealth reels exclusively since 2017. I really rate them and they can be picked up at bargain price from time to time at BCF sales. Here is a video review I did on them a month ago ruclips.net/video/S0dom5JjIuM/видео.html enjoy
