    The words with s and r get me every time. It sucks having a stutter. I'm a covert stammerer so I avoid speaking as much as possible especially in group situations. I know people say I am odd but I'm just extremely embarrassed about having a stammer so I don't socialise much. I'm sad and lonely a lot of the time and I have severe anxiety.

    Sometimes I talk with a slightly different accent to open up my throat so I can speak. I also write down what I have trouble with and show it to the person I'm talking to, like my name.

    • @MinkaLovesPineapples
      @MinkaLovesPineapples  7 лет назад +5

      I actually have spoken in a different accent as well before. It can help. I ordered a Starbucks drink one time in a British accent!

    • @lordaniolist
      @lordaniolist 7 лет назад +4

      I didn't think you would see my comment, awesome! I usually use British accents and a couple kind of made up accents too. One of my biggest words that's hard to say is "ask" so I usually say "say". Such as: "I saw Bob and he said, "do you have a phone"." I'm not good at coming up with examples like that. I enjoy your videos and will watch more soon! Thanks and stay great!

      Minka Frederika I tend to do that too and I've noticed the difference.

    • @MinkaLovesPineapples
      @MinkaLovesPineapples  7 лет назад +1

      Yes I see all comments! I also have made up some accents. I thought about permanently living my life speaking a British accent but decided not too. I have a lot of trouble saying my name and sometimes saying "hello" when I pick up the phone!

    • @lordaniolist
      @lordaniolist 7 лет назад +1

      I have trouble saying my name and answering the phone too. I hate when I'm talking to some one that has trouble hearing, noting against them, because I'll say my name or something and get through it then they didn't hear me so the next time I stutter on most words. Sometimes I'll say a "jump start" sentence were I'll start say something that leads up to what I'm going to say (Ex. "What was I going to, oh yeah"). Also if I need a pause I'll pretend to be thinking while I gather my sentence and courage, but I don't think that's good to do all the time because I feel like it makes me look scatterbrained which I can be, but not always.

    Its amazing to see how other people have handled their stutter. I have never thought of looking on here to see other peoples problems. I was born with this and went through very hard younger years. I'm so much better now, but I still get overwhelmed with it at times. I don't know about the rest of you, but I have to think of everything I am going to say before I say. Some days my brain hurts so much from all the repeated conversations I have in my head before I even have them out loud.

    • @MinkaLovesPineapples

      let me tell you what happened why I stutter. when I was a little kid (age 5). I had a friend that stuttered. you know as a kid we tend to imitate people because base on the fact that we where kids. so I copied my friend and the stuttering got me. till today I still stutter but it has reduced a lot. I use to hit myself when I tried to make a sentence. originally I don't stutter.

    My stutter is a little bit different. Whenever i stutter i don't repeat the word. I just hold the word until it comes out, is their anyway that you can help or another way i can speak differently to help my speech?

    • @amylake9064
      @amylake9064 6 лет назад

      Alizah Cardenas So you have a prolongation stutter. Specifically which sounds do you struggle with? Consonants or vowels?
      For consonants- light touches. Say the word "May". Purposely make yourself stutter too. What do you do with your mouth on the M sound? Do you press your lips together really hard? When you say M, or any consonant sound, say it very softly. Barely press your lips together. Don't but emphasis on consonants. On any consonant sound, avoid causing tension in any speech-related muscle areas: jaw, lips, tongue, throat, chest, diaphragm, and say those sounds very softly.
      For vowels: breathing. Say the word "Antler" and purposely make yourself stutter as well. Chances are you will feel tension somewhere. So what you should do to help relieve that is breathing. First, stop relax your muscles. Next, breathe in for two seconds, out for 1, and begin speaking. Speak into the exhale, don't pause between the exhale and your speech or else the exhale is useless.
      For a vowel in the middle of a word: continuous phonotation. Or, linking. Think of your sentence as a long word instead of individual words. Don't break up the words in your sentence.
      And just general advice: slow down. I know, I hate getting this from condescending people, but it works (for me, at least). If you speak slower, you give yourself time to plan the rest of your sentence(s), and you put yourself in greater control of your speech because you're more in-tune with what your mouth is doing and the way your body is feeling.

    Man, I don't have a "stutter" but I call it that. Sometimes I have trouble starting a word, like I go to form it in my mouth but I just can't make the noise for that specific sound. I don't know what its called. It doesn't happen extremely often but the annoyance it causes me when it does just made me wanna give you a hug every time you got hung up on a word in the video. You never got frustrated, which I found very cool. I can't imagine how annoying it must be sometimes in day to day life. 🤗

    Hi, Minka I think that, we had fixed in our brains for instance, if we have to say certain letters which we stutter on that, we stutter it at any how.
    I believe that to cure this to talk oneself in mirror. And also speak confidently.

  • @openspace923

    I believe you are safe from mean people on the internet because I would imagine those who watch you would be actively searching for stuttering videos. I have it on exactly the same level as you, even down to words beginning with certain letters. It's very uplifting to see somebody else who has it as bad as me!
    The worst moments I remember was when in secondary school, if we had a guest speaker or the likes, the whole class would have to introduce themselves individually. Always they go one by one and out loud must say their name and date of birth, which are two things I can't say for the life of me. Some of the class would make fun of me then and even in college a few people are very mean to me about it and would do stuff like fake stutter when they talk to me, which only makes it much worse.
    I remember once I was at a bar with a group of friends and we were all talking about the funniest tv shows. They asked me and I really wanted to say Blackadder, but I really struggle with B words. They were friends so obviously they understood and didn't mind, but it still makes me feel like a hindrance and such to hang out with. Sorry for this absurdly long comment, I just literally have nobody else to talk about stuff like this to. I only met one other person ever who had a stammer like me, and he lived in Donegal, which we left a few years ago, and I have yet to meet someone else.

    Seems like your biggest problem is with words that start with a letter that is formed by the tongue touching your upper teeth and letters formed by your lips or with word that require a sudden position change of your tongue, especially those two positions i mentioned.

    My two cents: When I realize I am about to stutter, I wrote down the word (in a imaginary paper) and read it.
    It's awkward, but it works most of times. :)

  • @dimastandayu9576
    @dimastandayu9576 7 лет назад

    Minka, you should practice a technique called "Soft Contact". It's a technique for stutterer to keep our lips open when we say a word so an air could still flow from our lips. The problem of the stutter start when we want to say a word but our lips still close, so it creates a stutter. Example when we say "people". When we start on P, it stuck! Because our lips closed. So the technique will teach us how to keep our lips open. So when you say these words....David, Minka, Bubble, Maybe, Bible, the problem is not on the words but on these letter D, M, B, M, B. So the point is the "Soft Contact" technique will teach us how to say those hard letters.I can share the technique to you if you want.

    I was at a doctor's appointment a few days ago and they asked me for my birthday and I stuttered pretty bad. I got stuck on "17" which is the day of my birthday and I wanted to crawl into a corner and never come out... It's worse when I'm at home and when I'm meeting people. I find myself having trouble pronouncing words and speaking full sentences. The letters I get stuck on are "B, E, D, F, K, S, P" and probably more. I'm not really certain. The thing with me is that I never had issues with stuttering before in my life until about a year or so ago. Is it uncommon to develop a stutter in your early twenties or is that something to be alarmed about? Because most stutterers have stuttered their entire lives and I haven't. This is a pretty recent speech impediment.

      Minka Koopman Thanks for answering! I just hope my stuttering wasn't set off by a possible head injury. I had a trunk of a car slammed on my head a while back and I'm hoping it doesn't have anything to do with my recent stuttering. (The trunk being slammed on my head was an accident by the way). It kind of worries me when I think about it, but I'm guessing it could also be caused by stress, anxiety and genetics.

      You're so welcome! Oh wow that's really sad I am sorry. Stuttering can be triggered from different things and some people are born with it or develop a stutter at a young age Try not to worry about it. Genes and anxiety/stress can trigger it.

      Minka Koopman Thanks for the reply. Kind of made me relax a little bit and not worry too much about what caused the stuttering. Love your channel and I'm looking forward to more of your videos. :-)

      @@alifnajmi1997 yeah, once ur 9-10 your speech organs are fully developed, if we get a stutter with that age (or even above) it's most likely due to a brain injury or emotional trauma.

    Well allow me to ease you mind from stuttering.
    Today I was going to take the bus on 1:25 and train was going to leave on 1:40.
    So, I thought I would take the bus. I went to the ticket station and got stuck on my city name😂😂😂.
    I tried breathing , and tried again, still no luck.
    Guess what I did?😂
    I took the train because I already had the ticket for the train which I purchased two days ago.😂😂😂😂
