Anyone familiar with their letters will know of the great esteem and respect that Vaughn Williams accorded Barbirolli. This mutual regard shines through in these recordings, which have been beautifully remastered and restored. I can only thank, once again the team at CMRR for their talent and insight, and for bringing such rare treasure to a digital platform.

This recording reminds me of my childhood: the village fete, the smell.of popcorn and pipe tobacco, the post office, men bringing the cows into milk, the mill, those wounded from war, brave men - solid we could rely on them. The old man who counted us children as we made our way up to the Hamlets. His dog, his limp, his silence. The men beating out the field fire, the men who dug out the ditches, snow drifts, who swopped veg and told ribald jokes. England of the past - all gone now. Given over to ticktok, alien religions, bizarre hedonism, carelessness and hate.

Malick had the Cannes Palme d'Or for "Tree of Life" but for me "Knight" would have also made a superb Palme in his incredible filmography... I have collected such masterpieces as this for over 5 decades now. I have never heard a recording with this conductor that is less than fully committed and frequently revelatory, often spiritually uplifting. "Light " composers or the 'profound heavy folks' makes no difference. And any orchestra he stands in front of is brought to a very high level.Does anyone possess a recording that would contradict me?
    Respectfully (I am no professional)

Thank you so much for these wonderful remastered recordings of this great conductor. I had the privilege of being born and educated in Manchester. I attended Halle concerts from the age of 10 ( 1959) untill i emigrated in 1981. I was at nearly every Barbirolli concert from 1959 until his sudden death in 1970. I had Sunday season tickets as well as season tickets for the Wed/ Thu series. He was a magnificent conductor . His Mahler, Sibelius , Elgar and Vaughn Williams were unforgettable. One particular concert was absolutely unique....3 fifth symphonies!! Schubert and Vaughan Williams 5th symphonies in the first half and Sibelius 5th in the second half. Barbirolli was loved by everyone, audiences and players alike. I strongly recommend the biography of Barbirolli by Michael Kennedy.

@@garynilsson416 sorry, i'm confused. I don't understand "had any hard feelings". I mean that music in the hands of Sir John is presented very, very beautifully and you can count on it.

There is a scratchy noise underlying this- as if dust is being carried along by the record needle.

Any information on how many takes there were? Think I hear a splice, so was it recorded ‘live’?

I take it this is an EMI recording, is the orchestra the HALLE or the LSO?

Don't bother with this. Midway through the fantasia you'll be hit with the first ad. Advertisements in the middle of Ralph Vaughan Williams? Disgusting.

The first add I got was from St. Jude, right on the early hours of Easter Day 2024 😢

Yes, the ads tell us so much about our society,or rather the 'state' of it.
