while true most self taught piano learners learn piano solo versions of songs for instrumental play not accompanied by others so playing the vocal melody becomes necessary. the same thing happens in piano solo arrangements of orchestral songs. the piano player will end up having to learn the melody of the strings/brass/woodwind if they're doing a solo performance of a song and work it into their piano arrangement
