I bought a MGM rimfire spinner. It is the same target, just scaled down. It is not too expensive, is much easier to move around, and is really pretty fun. Of course with .22 there is no recoil to manage, but with half size plates (4" and 5") it is at least as challenging as the full size version. Anyway, a few practice sessions with the rimfire version, and I was able to spin the spinner the next time it showed up in the match.
One of the comments made during that wonderful Ken Burns series on baseball is that the game is more about losing than it is about winning. There are some parallels here. Timing and pacing is critical in so many games. Watching the clean timing displayed by the guy with plus ten years of practise just made me shake my head. Deliberately adding stress of some form makes even mastered skills more difficult. An excellent presentation guys. Well done.
This video reminds me of the first time I encountered a Texas Star, I think it was my second match ever. Looked really intimidating but relaxing and working on getting clean hits on shot at a time worked. Felt great after clearing that stage.
Beating the star is always a good feeling for first-timers. My first encounter was at a bitch of a match that had the top half blocked by a barricade so that your first shot always set it spinning as fast as possible.
Preston Smith Oh man, I had one of those. They put a star at like 35 yards and it was obscured with walls so you had to wait for it to swing into a window and move positions to get all the hits. Lots of people failed that day. I think I left one plate.
I remember watching Russell's own videos of the Hard As Hell 2-gun, and comparing with yours. He was able to dispatch those spinners so easily. It seems to me the most significant difference between him and either you or Ian was that he relied heavily on double taps.
I shot my first 3 gun match a few weeks ago. When signing up I could see stage three from the table with a spinner. Had a gut wrench moment. I believe because of this video I was able to spin it with a malfunctioning pump shotgun ( which we all know dont malfunction) one of the fastest spinner engagements in my squad. Thanks for the tips!
Very helpful. I shot a match yesterday that had about six spinners. And they killed me. This technique looks like it will help. Thanks. Also, I need to work on my double taps.
When I first started to think about these after seeing them on video, something was telling me hitting the target at 90 degrees was best for some sort of kinetic vs. potential energy reason. I realized this didn't actually have any effect, but it's refreshing to realize that there is a reason it's still true: at this vertical position, the bullet transfers the maximum amount of its momentum to the spinner arms. Leverage also has nothing to do with it, but the bullets' momentum is all horizontal, so transferring it when the spinner's motion is _also_ all horizontal, not partly vertical, is ideal. Unless the reason is really just that a 90-degree hit is the most solid, and everything I just said is spurious. :)
I'm not sure if I agree with Karl saying you need to hold the gun "differently", that is, with a death grip, when shooting a red dot equipped pistol. Shouldn't a pistol always be gripped hard if you want to control it well? I'm aware the dot can jump around from shot-to-shot, but don't the same exact rules of recoil control + follow through apply to both a red dot gun and iron sight gun? I'm a novice when it comes to red dot pistol shooting, but this is the impression I get from what I've shot. Am I wrong, or missing something?
I panic as soon as the timer comes out! All of a sudden I can’t hit an 8 inch plate at 10 yards. Without the time I can keep my hole mag on that same plate at 25 yards.
Hi Karl, Having never shot a spinner, it seems to be pretty intuitive how it works. But on the the clock I can see where people panic and rush shots. Not to mention trying to to do it on the clock with small mags as we have seen Ian and you do several times, with the reload just about putting you back to square one. A technical question. is there a formula for spinners as far as weight distribution? What is the ratio of large and small plate? Thanks for all you do.
The only matches I have shot with a spinner has had it set up somewhere around 15 yards or closer. Is this a typical distance? I see them at Karl's matches that appear to be at longer distances even for pistols.
Wait. Was Ian not here for this? Karl is officially getting intimidated as of a couple matches ago. He's gotta regain that edge over the underdog. (No, not really. Fantastic tutorial, guys.)
For the .223/9mm shooters. Would it not be smart to carry some 79grain .223 and 147grain 9mm for xtra energy on target? (spinner) I shoot 3 gun in Canada and have not faced a spinner yet, but find my 147's knock the steel around better than cheap bulk 115's.
All you have to do is hit the spinner with .45acp coming out of a 1911 and it will spin first shot. The 45acp is so much stronger than wimpy 9mm that it will make the target spin for days.
My question to the people who are moaning and saying they are going to time out. Why aren't you practising on that type of target more, if you are so sure that is going to be your failure point.
I have found it is more often as Karl said in the video, mindset. At a local steel challenge match I see it all the time. We don’t use a spinner, but have one stage in particular that kills people. An array of a dozen or so poppers from 2”- 4” with a run across the bay to a hostage/bad guy headshot. The first thing I hear at that bay is oh crap, I say oh sweet! Some of the shooters are better than me, yet I almost always destroy them on that stage. It is mostly mindset coming into the stage.
I suspect it has a lot to do with the $400 price tag for this target. Also, many don't have access to a range or place where they can set up and use a target like this. Having said that, I do have access to such a range, so I bought the much cheaper rimfire version for exactly that reason (to address my failure points), and it has helped a great deal.
Instead of only moving the target a tiny bit, it will move a tiny tiny bit more. Still absolutely nowhere near the energy or momentum of a rifle round tho
Lol it can be hard to tell between humor and stupid sometimes, especially in youtube comments where the vast majority of people are either dumb as fuck or trolls, didn't mean to give you a hard time lol
*STRATEGY* *Rifle:* _use an AR chambered in .30-06 or .300 win mag_ *Pistol:* _reflex sight_ *EDIT:* :D *EDIT2:* _you buried the lead on what the .308 was!! ...now I have a hard-on... warn a guy next time!_
yes I know... I love the scar.. hence the comment of them nonchalantly calling it a .308 -- "burying the lead" and "having a hard-on for it". I never asked what it was ... I knw what it was, I've shot SCAR's in several calibres ... I never fail to be jealous when I give it back to it's owner.
I have no idea where you got the idea that this was a "Christian Channel", but I did accidentally leave that in during editing - that wasn't intentional.
I think the best way to deal with a spinner is a bayonet charge.
I was thinking that in the last match video. Just throw the 1911 at the spinner and close in. So much for expedient and efficient.
The bottom would smack you in the balls
I think a destructive device would be appropriate
Ian turns up at next match that has spinner with a forgotten weapon the .950 JDJ determined to spin the mother.
They were disappointed to have missed "their" turn/opportunity for medical treatment.
Grenades are a game changer
I'm hoping that someday we'll get to see MAS-38 vs. Lage SMG 2-gun matches...and Chauchat ones. :D

Gun Sense (drmaudio) That's actually a pretty good idea for some inexpensive training. Teaches the same concept.
Yeah, that would be one of the things where rimfire practice translates really nicely, wouldn't it?

Have you tried missing less?
+Kyle That’s silly.
Lol
I just tried that - it's working!
Kyle That's like saying "aim first, then shoot". 😂
Halinspark I know its a difficult concept to grasp lol. But I swear it works
InRangeTV - where you don't have to shoot lefty, but it can't hurt!
Thanks for the vid guys. I'm able to deal with the spinner when I am shooting it with my rifle but I have been timing out with my pistol.
Very helpful. I shot a match yesterday that had about six spinners. And they killed me. This technique looks like it will help. Thanks. Also, I need to work on my double taps.
Here after Ian (Forgotten Weapons) put out his video today. :D
Simplicity itself: going away, shooty, coming toward, no shooty. I’m set for my next Two Gun! Thanks, Karl.
Thank you Russell
fun to watch old videos where he says mass with pistols doesnt matter, but then with the .50 guncrafter industries it clearly mattered
as a soldier, the govrement pays for rounds. somethimes the right thing to do is creating a "lead wall"
Karl, after the shoot, did you take the plates out for a spin?
Hostile I see you on every inrangetv video good to see I'm not the only one completely obsessed
Hostile good god that was a bad pun.
:)
Excellent explanations and demonstrations!
Stage design at the next 2G-ACM; Two Texas stars, a Polish plate rack, and a spinner?

i spun it with 7 shots first time..9mm..very fun and challenging target system.
Can we get, "shooty, no shooty" on a shirt?
Please!
You must always know where your towel is.
McCollum's Bane...
"Don't panic!" - Karl playing Lance Corporal Jack Jones - the "Family Butcher". :)))))
tsk tsk ... nope: Dad's Army ...
"......Stupid boy"
of course youtube would show me this vid right after ian did his video with the Alien lmao
Another lefty? Is it contagious ?
Thank you
This is the greatest frustrating spinner of all time
We just had the biannual 2 gun night match in Parma, Idaho. Shooting it with a light mounted pistol is a whole nother level of B.S.
"Hitch Hikers Guide to the Universe" reference great.
Karl, I like how you trotted a bunch of preemptive excuses then wrecked the spinner so quick :D
Are these as difficult as those programable moving targets you sometimes find on some army ranges or maybe even civilian ranges?
Don't think I've seen those in a video. :o

Grasp it firmly
Please do a video of this with a ruger mki/ii/iii/iv
GREAT VIDEO
Is it within the rules to throw your pistol at the spinner-target?
No, absolutely not.
How about a Heavy tactical rock? :D
Only if the 180 isn't broken
Nice shooting 👍
Excellent info!!!
Love the hitchhikers guide reference lol

I bet this is Ian's *favorite video
Ian isn't even in this video.
Hahaha

STs are fun!

Good content Karl... at a boy 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏼👍🏼
PPSH-41 mud test & MP-40 mid test would be interesting to watch,
fun for the viewer, but not for the owner 😄
When are we getting Red Oktober footage, Karl? I'm dying over here.
Double/triple tap concept on spinner very cool!

MrDugbo171 it's not enough to matter. You might do it in seven hits instead of eight
Gone are the days of "badly placed" expletive censors... This is the ÜberInrangeTV...
What about low capacity handguns? I carry a 6+1.
What do you mean mass on target doesn't matter with handguns? If you use something like a .500S&W that would make that spin with fewer shots.
In normal match terms. No one brings a 500 S&W to any competitive environment.
Jerry Miculek does. But a hot 10mm might make a difference tough.
In normal match terms. No one brings a 500 S&W to any normal competitive environment, including Jerry Miculek.
I REALLY wanna try shooting one of these with my K-31 now.
We cant use spinners on the range near me. I have one but havent used it yet
Karl has a lot of left handed friends
how long is that range?
Shooty / NO Shooty should be a decision tree Tshirt
All you have to do is hit the spinner with .45acp coming out of a 1911 and it will spin first shot. The 45acp is so much stronger than wimpy 9mm that it will make the target spin for days.
Sometimes the plates fly off when you hit it with a 1911.
Russell Fagan, Karl's new best friend.
How useful is full-auto on a spinner?
It can do pretty well, as long as you keep it on the plate.
Subguns can rotate it in. Sub 3 seconds
it still takes 2 hits usually
I'd like to watch a 2GACM that's all spinner targets, they can call it the "InRageTV" match
AN-94 is purpose built for the spinner. I need Russian unicorn gun plz
My question to the people who are moaning and saying they are going to time out. Why aren't you practising on that type of target more, if you are so sure that is going to be your failure point.

Are all of your friends left handed?
Mr. Kasarda,
Now take what you've learned and go spin the spinner with your 1911...
How about impressing people by doing at 400+....you know, like it is actually engaged at a rifle comp.
All 11 dislikes are from gun Jesus
Who the heck shoots 110 grain .223? I didn't even know .223 came that heavy.
10mikemikeshooter he's referring to putting 2 55 grain projectiles on it rapidly
SinistralRifleman oh, I see. Going back to my cave of embarrassment and ignorance.
How to spin a spinner: git gud
I’ve never heard you swear before Karl 💁
Yeah, I forgot to edit that out.
Oh no, now he won't be monetized!
;]
Holy shit the wheels come off holy fuck watdo I do... lol
Step 1. Use a 50 cal
RPG-7 Would fix that spinner!🤔😁🇺🇸🔫
So I think karl is saying if I want a girlfriend I just need to find a woman and Pummel her into submission with a positive mindset. Thanks in range!
That's not the idea. :)
BUT WHAT IF YOU USE A 10MM?! Lol

did karl say holy fuck at 0:28? I thought this was a Christian Channel.
I have no idea where you got the idea that this was a "Christian Channel", but I did accidentally leave that in during editing - that wasn't intentional.
Gabe Duplechain and half a sentence before that he said holy shit. Shock horror
No that's just an internet meme from pewdiepie:)
I want to see it with a 12 Gauge Pump Shotgun With Slugs Karl will Mass of the Slug act like the 308 or Just Whip The Target Around 1st Shot 😎
Chris Chiampo 2 slugs generally get it done
Fidget spinner for non-autists.
"Manly Fidget Spinner"
Shooty, no shooty, shooty, no shooty…… you teaching kids dude?
Or you could just use .45 and get it spinning fast enough to power Wisconsin after one shot.
.45 still generally takes 6 solid hits
SinistralRifleman I wasn't joking in the slightest.
The assumption is then your friend is a lefty shooter. (I said this seeing his name, before they started shooting)
Alistair Shaw correct
SinistralRifleman I must congratulate you on an awesome choice of name.
Karl needs to watch his language, I don't want my kids watching this explicitly mouthed man 😤
I missed that during editing.
i hate getting to watch all this and know ill never be able to do it 😪 stupid gun laws that make sense 🙄
I think they're just conflicted.
tackytrooper umm search oxymoron on google, i cba explaining
Anyone come back to this after watching Ian with his new Alien?
what about magnum handguns?
+Gabe Musashi No one uses magnum handguns in competitive environments.
