Timelapse: Fire Ant Colony Rebuilding After a Storm

- This is a timelapse taken over 15 hours of a fire ant colony before, during, and after a heavy rain storm. There was about an hour and a half of very heavy rain which collapsed the anthill. When the rain stopped, the ants poured out and spent many hours rebuilding the hill bigger and better.
I setup my DSLR camera to take pictures with an intervalometer just in time before the rain started. I’ve tried this a few times and usually something goes wrong, either the rain doesn’t come or it rains but the ants don’t do anything afterward. This time it worked out perfectly.
The beginning of the video up until it stops raining is at 420x normal speed then it changes to around 720x normal speed. I included a few real-time clips taken while the time-lapse camera was running (1:40) so you can see how slow of a process it actually is for the ants.

It's always reviving. Seriously though, I don't know. I'm usually in the process of making videos but it takes me alot of time. Also, the channel doesn't earn enough revenue to quit my job so I don't have much time to work on it. I have two more videos that are close to finished though, should post again soon.

@@paigelux4819Blind or not, they still can sense light and the direction of it's projection with their eyes in the center of their head. Even the ants without compound eyes have them.

also you used the camera to take pictures instead of capturing full 60fps video? (I hear the click sound)
Yeah, it just takes them so long it would be too much to record video (15 hours) and I'd need to increase the speed greatly in the end anyway to make it interesting to watch.

I washed down an ant hill yesterday morning. I watched as they were picking up their eggs for a couple of minutes. This morning, I was amazed to see the ant hill back. Ants are hard workers.

To them this is like an apocalyptic event. Their lives are so short, only weeks long, so something like this is not very likely to happen in their lifetime unless in quite a watery area. It reminds me of civilization lol, it took a hard hit yet it still regrows. To ants we're like gods and it fascinates me.
Don't go to this fire ant nest at 3 AM you'll be swarmed! XD
