I've had my 430EXII for quite some time, and never have been able to use it to its utmost. As an "old" man(73) I fin it refreshing to see someone in the younger generation use their knowledge for enlightening us "old" folks. I learned an awful lot on my flash, thanks to you. Have a Blessed day.
Thank you so much for the simplicity of your tutorials...I am a 65 year old grandmother who would like to take awesome pics of my 7 grandkids!! Totally explained everything to me
I am MOST grateful to (finally, at last) stumble upon your excellent video! Thank-you for this video! My 430 EX came second-hand in 2010 and now in 2017 I know what to do with the buttons - YAY! Jim, Canberra
Just watching a couple of your flash tutorials. They are very easy to understand and informative. Flash is something I like many others find difficult to understand. Thanks for your help.
Thanks so much for posting this vid! I've been trying to work out how to use the 430EXII as a off camera flash for a very long time now, due to losing the instruction book! Just watched your vid and straight after was using it as an off camera flash! My world has just got bigger. many thanks.
Great Video, much clearer than the manual. I picked up a mk1 430 from a lady who thought the thing was broke (it was switched to slave mode), the thing is a revelation to me I'd been using a fully manual YN-560 III which being all manual was a nightmare at times. The ETTL and assist beam have transformed my results and the HSS and 2nd Curtain Sync are going to open a world of possibilities
I finally bought the Speedlite and watched you original video on it and your updated version. Glad to learn from you on how to operate it. It saves me lots of time and not having to read the manual. Thanks.
Thanks for the informative video. I am just moving into digital from my 35 year old Nikon film camera and equipment. I picked up a 430 EX II at a great price and took it to a graduation event thinking it couldn't be that much different. After a complete FAIL I'm slowing down a bit to learn all over it seems. Your videos have helped me tremendously, thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge. Your videos are straight forward and easy to follow.
thank you, just purchased 430 ex, (used) to get started with speedlight and away from pop up flash. this video took away my initial frustration with not understanding this new accessory - thanks for putting my mind at ease!
Thank you so much! I never realized that Custom Function 1 would stop the off-camera lights from continually needing to be awakened after they fell asleep. That was always very irritating, problem now solved. I would mention that second curtain is also used when there is a moving object and you want a trail behind it, like a running person. Second curtain, with a slow shutter speed, will record the trail and at the end, flash. If you used first curtain, the flash would be at the beginning of the trail (which would actually be the end), which would be backwards. I got quite a bit out of this video. I just purchased a Canon 580EX (not the 580EX II) which should arrive in a few days, so I'll be back on RUclips looking for more videos like this one. Thanks!
Thank-you !!! Both videos helped me so much so I now feel confident to use it after 2 years of it sitting in a drawer .Was thinking of selling it but will keep it now.
Awesome video, straight to the point covering the surface items to get me using my 430EX II with a lot more knowledge on the speedlite than I had 10 mins ago. Thank you so much
Thanks very helpful... I had a bad camera day yesterday getting white wash from my flash... today I'm back to normal. Thanks for the reminder video, I needed that today. I have the flash working with my 7D
1/1 number is how powerful the light so 1/1 is full power the 24mm is how wide the light beam is. Lets say it was at 105mm it would be much narrow light and 24mm the light spread is much wider.
It was a great video. Just what I was looking for: a video showing in detail the various functions of the flash. I have a 580 ex II flash, but I learned a lot about its features looking at your excellent video. Keep up the good work!!!!
Thank you for the tut can I just make a little point regarding the built in diffuser it takes your flash to 14mm and if you don't know like I didn't when you push it back into place if you have not pushed it back all the way just leaving it out only by a slight amount then your still looking at the 14 mm spread I had not realized my mistake and thought that my flash was broke I found out the answer on youTube thanks again for putting up the vid regards
Hi , thanks for your video on canon 430 ex ll ,can you please let me know how to fire two flesh simultaneously one on camera hot shoe and other from the distance, I had two canon flesh 430 ex ll and canon 580 ex ll and canon 77 d camera , thanks
thank u for your vid tutorial, i wonder whether this speedlite can be used for stoboscopic shooting, since I found in youtube they mostly using 580EX II rather than 430EX II, mine is 430EX II
Thanks for the video, Do you have any that go into more detail about the modes and slave function. I would also like to know more about the curtain function as well. thanks
Thank you for your help I had problems with the 430ex II keeping up with my canon 7d I'm just starting out this is my first real camera and flash, this helped me out thanks again
I have the same flash and I'm just wondering what kind of batteries should I use like I use rechargeable batteries but what kind of strong rechargeable battery should I use
thank you your video was very helpful. I am using a Canon t5i I was wondering if you could help me with a question. For some reason I am unable to adjust my shutter speed when my flash is attached. I am in manual mode on my camera so I have no idea what's going on.thanks for the help
Thank you for such informative video which helped a lot. However, now that I'v got over this hurdle I would like to know how to set the flash/use up with my canon 500d camera dslr. Looking forwardf to your response. Thank you.
Thank you very very much! I do have a question though, I just bought one online, but can I use it wireless with my Mark II 5D? Or do I need to buy something else? Thank you very much!
Nice review ... Wanted to ask you why are my photos a bit yellowish when I bounce my 430 eX ii ... The camera I use is the 6D ... The white balance on Auto and if I set it at flash it gets worse ... I used to have a nikon D700 and the nikon sb600 and the colors and exposure were perfect when I used to bounce the flash ... Would appreciate your help ...
So I'm a wedding dj and i picked up a t5i to take some shots of our setups and of course some actions shots of the crowd and what not. I ran into the some problems where I didn't have much light to work with and I didn't want a direct flash look. So running the iso too high made the shots noisy. So s friend photographer advised to pick up an external flash and aim the flash away from the subject. Would this be a good buy for me? Thanks
Greetings, thanks for taking the time to make this video. Things are a little more clear to me than they were. However, I don't mean to sound nasty here, but I don't understand why you'd explain something as simple and obvious as an On/Off button, but then when speaking of Channels, Masters and Slaves act like someone should know what the heck they are. I've never hear those terms in my life (in the context of a flash). Sorry if I sound critical, but I'm puzzled over that.
Thanks a lot, I didn't even know how to use it! Pls I would dearly appreciate some explanation about the curtains, you mentioned?? Again thanks for sharing your knowledge, cheers from Uruguay.
Hey, probably forgot to mention what happens with the settings when the diffuser is out. Screen starts blinking and flash goes to 14mm. thanks for a great video
Media Unlocked do you know how to set up a sync speed? is it possible? Let's say I want to photograph a ball dopping into a cup of water and I want to freze the image?
Can you make it tutorial video on the canon speedlite 470ex-ai??? I can find any good videos on it... What every bottom does... Please and thank you...

when you use a lowe speed in the camera... you can chose the flash to go off at the beginning (default) or at th eend (lower curtain). its useful because even though you are using a low speed that typically will blur your object... the flash at the end freezes it (and the background / not lit) is blurred...

Hi thanks for the demo, what do I need to work with two 430exll as slave thank you.
I don't understand to what this numbers mean at minute 4:32. Are the meter and the power of the light?
1/1 number is how powerful the light so 1/1 is full power the 24mm is how wide the light beam is. Lets say it was at 105mm it would be much narrow light and 24mm the light spread is much wider.
Great "Tut" David, makes a lot more sense than the Manual.
Just ordered this flash today, can't wait to get it, thanks for the video!

thank u for your vid tutorial, i wonder whether this speedlite can be used for stoboscopic shooting, since I found in youtube they mostly using 580EX II rather than 430EX II, mine is 430EX II

+jackisking143 I no longer use rechargeable battery's. I use your basic energizer battery's now. Use a toss them away
thank you your video was very helpful. I am using a Canon t5i I was wondering if you could help me with a question. For some reason I am unable to adjust my shutter speed when my flash is attached. I am in manual mode on my camera so I have no idea what's going on.thanks for the help
what speed are you trying to use over 200 shutter?
Hi, thank you for your video, how can I use it on the stand and not on the camera?
+Amir Lahijy You need a wireless flash trigger and receiver plus a mount for your stand
If your camera has a built in flash, you can use that to trigger your speedlite.
Did you ever make a vid for the rear curtain setup?
I never did sorry.
i appreciate this tutorial, man! Thanks.
***** thanks
Thank you for the video, you made it quite easy to understand how to work it!
Happy to help
Thank you very much!!! Very helpfull!!! 👌🏻
Hi, Very nice tutorial! What would be the most ideal setting of the flash for normal indoor portrait shots?
It changes from scene to scene. I would put it on ETTL if you do not know manual very well.
Very nice update! Thanks again.
Jack Holley thanks
hai,, Is it possible to vary the intensity and widening of flash, when we r using slave mode?
Can you use the flash on Nikon D3000?
Thank you very much for making this video.
You’re very much welcome!
Thank you for such informative video which helped a lot. However, now that I'v got over this hurdle I would like to know how to set the flash/use up with my canon 500d camera dslr. Looking forwardf to your response. Thank you.
What questions do you have?
Please let me know when you've created a video for the closed curtain mode
Hi - I would also like a second curtain explanation. Great instruction video :-)
Great tutorial...but what mode should camera be in when using the flash? tv or av or manual setting?
Any of them I am in M mode most of the time.
Can I assume that you can't use this remotely with the 5DMKIII, which doesn't have a built-in flash?
Thank you very very much!
I do have a question though, I just bought one online, but can I use it wireless with my Mark II 5D? Or do I need to buy something else?
Thank you very much!

Hassan Abdul Hadi What is the scene you are shooting in.
Indoor portraits of kids with the room having fluoresent lighting
Hassan Abdul Hadi change your white balance to fluoresent and see if that help

Yes it would.
Yes very helpful
A video on use for weddings and curtain flash would be outstanding
Carrie Bowman that is still in the works
Could you explain what the diffuser is used for
to stop the light down make it more even
Greetings, thanks for taking the time to make this video. Things are a little more clear to me than they were. Agreed I had to Google what they mean! Great video otherwise though :)
great video... to the point and gives a great understanding of the settings. thank you! One question, was wondering where the custom settings were to?
None ETTL mode or your camera in h settings
Excellent video! The rear curtain sync video would be great, I'm looking forward to it.
thanks hoping to do it in the near future
Thanks a lot, I didn't even know how to use it! Pls I would dearly appreciate some explanation about the curtains, you mentioned?? Again thanks for sharing your knowledge, cheers from Uruguay.
Daniela Argandoña Thanks happy to help
You need a wireless transmitter and receiver. Cowboy studio makes a nice cheap set. I do have a review on them if you look.
Hey, probably forgot to mention what happens with the settings when the diffuser is out. Screen starts blinking and flash goes to 14mm. thanks for a great video
Daniel Bustamante I noticed the same thing
This flash seem to lose power on my batteries and performance , what's your advice on what to do and what to change?
Use high power batteries and low shutter speed for low use of battery
I bought a 6D. Would this be suited for a small indoor and outdoor wedding?
Yes it would. I just used it at a wedding this last weekend.
Awesome thank you :D
no problem
does it work well with canon 5D mark iv?
Yes
Do you need a trigger to connect this with canon 77d???
would this be good for night photography
grant stapp yes
Thank you very much! Very informative and helpful! Appreciate.
Denis Den happy to help
What setting does camera have to be in to use external flash?
You just need to put it on one of the manual modes.
+Thomas Mosig Depends on your camera, I have a Canon 5D mark iii and found out....it won't...but on my canon 70D, it works fine.
Keith Johnson I have a 5D Mark iii as well and it works perfectly fine what issues are you having?
Random, but where is the PDF you mentioned in the beginning of the video? I would like to download that to have on hand. Loved the video!
Trish Stopczynski Type in 430ex pdf in google
Media Unlocked Thank you!
Will this work wirelessly with an 80D as a single off camera flash
no
Media Unlocked do you know how to set up a sync speed? is it possible? Let's say I want to photograph a ball dopping into a cup of water and I want to freze the image?
Arián Krakov hyper sync is what you need with a fast shutter
Media Unlocked oh. Thanks! I will try then!
Can you make it tutorial video on the canon speedlite 470ex-ai??? I can find any good videos on it... What every bottom does... Please and thank you...
If you buy and send me one I can definitely do so for you.
so i got this and i can't use high speed sync off camera? i would need a 580-ex or wireless triggers?
That is correct
When you do compensation and want to SET at a speficic 1/3rd or whole of a stop, press SET. The flashing of the compensation number will stop.
This is incredibly helpful! best review yet for this flash in particular! thank you so much :)
***** thanks
What is a bracket setting ehat is it used for
Awesome walk through. Thank you so much.
This video has been extremely helpful to me. However, I have a question. When using this flash with my Canon Rebel T4i on Manual Mode, can my lens be on AF? It seems to "confuse" the flash even though I have it set to shoot after 2 seconds. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!
Question! I pressed the ZOOM button and set the focal length manually. But now I want to undo this and have the focal length set automatically from my camera - but I can't figure out how to do that. Should be simple, and I'd appreciate your reply! Best, Jeremy
Are you in ETTL mode or M mode in M mode you can change it. ETTL mode is like and automatic mode.
please make a video on how the lower curtain setting works!
when you use a lowe speed in the camera... you can chose the flash to go off at the beginning (default) or at th eend (lower curtain). its useful because even though you are using a low speed that typically will blur your object... the flash at the end freezes it (and the background / not lit) is blurred...
Hey, thanks for your video but theres something i'm not sure about here, Is it possible to use my camera integrated flash as a trigger for the 430EX ii ?
Thanks again ! :)
