I drove a old Land Cruiser Prado in Iraq while on deployment there. There were a ton of them there. It ran, the ac worked, and it NEVER broke down. Best of all, it allowed us to "blend in" while traveling amongst the natives.
My parents had a 2001 Land Cruiser prado when they were stationed in Africa it was our favorite car, we took it off road and through Safaris the only complaint was it was under powered.
We had two 2004 Land Cruiser diesels with manual transmissions issued to our teams while I was there 2005-2007. Those things were bullet proof, and the A/C was nice. I didn't think much of it at the time, but it would be nice owning that Land Cruiser diesel today.
James gotta say I’m really enjoying your auto content man. Full speed ahead! I had a ‘92 Previa for years and the 90s Toyota interior brought back so many wild memories
What an incredible video! You've gained a lifelong fan from Pakistan. I happen to own the same model of J78 as well. You can imagine the smile on my face while watching your video and seeing your car. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos in the near future. Once again, keep rocking !!! and thank you!
You guys out in the east have done a damn good job keeping all your cruisers and pajeros in such good working order all of these years. This gear head salutes you and your people's unending love for these beautiful machines
Some trivia: In the original novel by Michael Crichton, Toyota Land Cruisers were used as the tour vehicles in _Jurassic Park._ While they were replaced with Ford Explorers in the movie, the game _Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis_ retains them.
I love my Prado I’ve spent years looking for the right one in the right, as new condition, mine is thirty years old and is in the same showroom condition as my two year old Porsche 911, it’s a capable motor anywhere, an ugly ducking three door but man it draws more looks and has more people coming up to me making offers to buy it than the German sports car. This motor is just genius.
Hi James, I've had a KZJ78 for around 6 months here in New Zealand. Love it. A few worthwhile things to do to get better power from the 1KZ is: Better dump pipe (Downpipe) from the Turbo and a 3 inch exhaust, it improves the power greatly and helps keep temperatures lower in the engine. Next for me will be a Front Mount Intercooler, these two mods add around 30 to 50 HP, without any tuning. As soon as I drove the truck after the 3 inch exhaust was fitted, I could tell the difference. Much more power and better high speed cruising. There's a company here in New Zealand that makes the custom Dump pipes - KRAE 4x4 - they ship internationally. Enjoy.
I lived in Tanzania for two years 2005-2007 and bought a used Land Cruiser Prado 1992 years model from Japan (delivered to Tanzania). I really loved that veichle, but had to sell it when I left Tanzania. :(
Finally somebody says something about the Prado during 90s . This Prado is something special. The Prado changed similar to the New Tacoma and 4Runner after 1995. Note : in our region they call it (Landcruiser II)Thank you
As an owner of a KZJ71G-PET myself, I can tell you that the KZJ78 is in absolutely impeccable condition. I didn't skip any part of the video, and believe me when I say I know this car inside and out, as I've had to rebuild mine almost completely. You have every OEM part, sticker, and every little part of the interior looks great, even those that tend to break easily, which most would just let pass if they were missing or broken. I loved your video. Finding someone who appreciates the exact same things about this car is an absolute gem. I really hope you make a series about it or feature it regularly in your videos. Well-deserved like and subscribe.
Great video and review James. I couldn't agree with you more😁 I love my 1993 KZJ78W-PGT. I live in Malawi, and bought it here (same colour as yours) in Malawi in early 2023, it needed lots of work, and painstakingly rebuilt it, took body off chassis, checked and replaced suspension bits where necessary, resprayed pearl white, put all safari mods on it, roof rack, tent, dobinson's heavy duty bull bar, winch, redid sunroof, redid engine, infotainment plus plus. Remaining now the snorkel, and dobinson's 3" lift and 16" off road wheels. I love it. Will never part with it. A real classic car ...
James J. Reeves Esq. This is a refreshing change of pace. I could see this channel becoming a "Lifestyle" channel. TFB for all things that go BOOM, and this channel for the rest of the stuff.
Im from australia and the prado has been a top 5 selling car for decades. We only officially got the 90 series here first not the 70 series prado. I wish we did since i love the look of them. I grew up in a 1996 prado 95 and current have a 2006 120 prado. Best cars ever never missed a beat.
Cool vehicle. Here in Aus, I’m running a 2020 79 series dual cab V8 diesel with portal axles and a 300mm chassis extension. Nothing can stop it and it makes all the big American trucks look like toys😊😊😊
I love this take on "The Best Land Cruiser" and why it's more about what's the best Land Cruiser for you. I have a 2006 100 series Land Cruiser that's halfway build and for me it's the perfect Land Cruiser. It can breeze through 1000 mile road trips getting to cool places, then do days to weeks off-road pounding on rocks and dirt trails, easy to camp and live out of, and even though I've put a ton of money into it. It's still cheaper than a 200 which makes me not hate myself for every scratch that gets put on it, and for a lot of what I'm actually driving most of the time, it's way more comfortable, quieter, roomier for my sleeping platform and much more powerful than an 80. I love pretty much every cruiser for what it's the best at, and there is a Cruiser for most people depending on your use and build. Pick what works for you and your budget and join the cult. It's by far the best car community I've ever been a part of.
Rode one with a friend who drove it like he stole it to make it on time to a business opening in another city 4 hours away. He turned a 4 hour ride into a 3 hour ride with the pedal to the metal. All I could do was hang on to the hand grip above the passenger door window for dear life as we sped through the highway avoiding traffic by sometimes overtaking on the shoulder of the road. I expected the top heavy land cruiser to roll over during the high speed approaches around a curb at least ten times. At some point during the drive, I kept hearing this beeping sound above the roar of the engine as he gunned it and asked him what the hell that sound was. His answer was:"Oh that's just the speedometer indicator alarm telling us we're going over 165 Kph limit." Almost peed myself during the drive.
Depending on your country you can still buy brand new 70 series land cruisers. No computers or anything to break. Just a simple and reliable truck but with that new car smell 👌
Yes they do. The 70 series platform has never died just been updates every year. Just tweaks here and there. It’s pretty much the same car since they first built it
You can import 70's from Australia, they have a diesel manual that's perfect and has zero infotainment or bullshit. Austalian 70 series quite literally hasn't change since they came out in 83. You can thank the mining industry there for that, pricy though since not many outside of the mining corps still buy them
That's the beauty. They don't have to. They did, so you can still get them for a fraction of the price of a new car. With all of the money you save, you can drop a motor in when the time comes and save that much more by driving it forever.
You should talk to Skid Factory or something, I guarantee you could turn up the boost on that a little and it would still be dead reliable. It might even be better for it because you won't have to be going foot to the floor all the time just to keep up with traffic. If you can cut your acceleration times that means you're back to lighter throttle cruising sooner. Skid Factory can tell you what would be a safe level to go too and what you need. Aussies know their stuff.
Love the land cruiser. I was issued one when I worked in Saudi arabia ( consultant for the Ministry defenses regarding the oil well damage ) . It was a great vehicle, spending Thursdays and Fridays exporting the century old desert village relics . I had to have a driver in the cities of jubail , Riyadh, and jeddah. I was at the Riyadh nov 13, 1995 . We didn't know it was al - Qaeda coming out party until years later .
It's the contours, you can also find the same look in the Dodge Raider(though most were all beat to hell by reckless assholes at moab)/mid 80's early 90's Mitsubishi Pajero's,
Love me, my old toyotas. I'm the 2nd owner of a 90 supra targa, and I've had it since high school. I'm really glad I talked myself out of selling it multiple times over the years. 🤘🤙✌️
Great video. Enjoying this series, and it’s good to note that we all have other interests outside of the 2A/firearms community. One day, I’ll be making lawn makeover videos with a side hustle of tractor maintenance videos. LOL
The Toyota Prado J78 has got to be one of the coolest looking SUVs of its generation. So it's surprising how there's barely any videos of it on RUclips.
I've owned the very same Land cruiser prado LJ78 16 years ago. We only had few of them imported models in India so mine was the only one in the whole city. I've driven a lot of other vehicles since then but I still miss it today.
Beautifully explained Ur love for LC. Just can't get better. I am also proud owner of KZJ78 5 door wagon. U should not shy in telling that It's a brutal off-road machine while having beautiful looks
It’s a thing of beauty imo. Just old school af! Sure it’s boxy and slow .. but it’s so unique! I guess it’s an acquired taste. The great thing about them is that they have good mileage and they are already set up to be a great off roader. Coiled solid axles front and rear. You could actually use it as a great base for a competent crawler if you wanted to go that way. Some of them even came with an electronic front diff lock.
I ran a 1991 JDM LJ71 SWB 3-door 2.4D auto for years here in Malta - fantastic trucks! Toyota still manufacture the 78 series in Portugal, Malaysia and South America....
Landcruisers were THE car for anyone even remotely important in the drug world in Colombia in the 80’s and 90’s. Iconic cars, especially the 70 series.
Love this. Watching this in my 300,000 mile Toyota Sequoia, and ive been eyeballing 80 series Landcruisers, this is also on my list. I figured being a Glock guy, you had no taste... this is a gem! Awesome video as always! Looking forward to more content on this.
Perfect shorter range daily driver platform. Would kill for just about any 70 series, but I must say having access to an ample stock of cheap 400hp 200 series is an absolute beast of a consolation gift for us Americans. Amazing rigs.
Thanks for running up the price for the rest of us! I have an FJ62 and understand the things it does less well. Of course, they can be made into one of the best vehicles on the road. Throw a 80 series frame and drivetrain, an engine swap, more comfortable seats, sound insulation, a nice center console with cup holders, upgrade lighting all round, and just a few odds and ends pretty much does it. That's assuming the paint, glass, mirrors and bumpers are functional and cosmetically acceptable. I probably don't have to mention resealing the rain gutters. But a Prado you say.....hummmm, I'll give it some thought.
Finally get to see this LC after all the peeks in your other vids. Solid f-ing choice, James. Im a big fan of older SUVs especially the JDM ones. And now that the imports are coming in due to the 25 year rule, I'm also on the hunt for my own. Hopefully i can snag a nice 2 door Pajero
I was so close to buying one after your video. 95' prado that I initially put a deposit on. Well her '92 80 series showed up so I went with the bigger sister! it was a Beretta a300 vs 1301 situation. Picking her up on Monday! Ironically I was in Japan when I bought the japanese import in the states!
11:08 every car has this vent, but it’s usually hidden behind the truck cab or the rear bumper for SUVs/cars. It releases the pressure as the door slams, so the door can close. Otherwise the door wouldn’t want to close bc of the air pressure not having anywhere to escape
I agree, brilliant vehcile. I’ve got one but with the U.K 4runner engine, 1KZT, has a manual fuel pump, the only such vehicle I believe that was fitted with a manual fuel pump in the KZ and not efi. No ecu, no egr and no dpf’s😃
Kzj78 owner here. Hit the review on the spot. Only gripe is the electronic contolled front hub locker. Known to go bad best to change to manual lockers. Truely a best blend of ultilitarian and creature comforts.
I have been very happy with my 4th gen 4Runner, which is the 120 platform, though it is not an LC. I was a lifelong Jeep guy until I had a kid and wanted something that mixed durability and passenger comfort, while still being capable off-road. So far so good. Also, with the V8 I can tow a fair amount, though I only do that occasionally.
I’m getting one James based only on your recommendation. The only downside is that I am an auctioneer and I have an instant grat personality. I’ll let you know when I pick one up and install the snorkel.
@JamesReeves these are really cool. I've lived in Japan about 1.5 years total. I'm a bit surprised you don't own a drop top Sunday cruiser like a Porsche Boxer or Miata or s2000 maybe.
I'm a G-Wagen guy myself; I pulled a Humvee out of the sand with one while also in the sand. I'm patiently waiting for a chance to get one on surplus from the CAF.
This was the last Prado worth the title of just LandCruiser. This has the same underbody key features as the 80 series . Coil springs all round and solid axles front and rear. After this Prado everything changed. They all went to IFS (independent front suspension) and removed the solid front axle. The funny part is that you can buy this 1996 Prado right now as a 2024 model in a few countries. The shape hasn't changed. It's not called a 78 series anymore as that relates to the Troopcarrier now. Now it's called the LandCruiser 76 series. Leaf springs in rear though. But V8 turbo diesel in Australia. Where as in UAE it is sold with a 4.0L V6 petrol. They also have the 2 door wagon version there. In Australia we only have the 5 door wagon. Awesome truck
In Australia, the 70 series includes the 76 wagon, the 79 dual cab ute, and the 78 troop carrier. There is also the 75 single cab ute. The modern versions have run a 4.5 litre V8 single turbo diesel, with the latest gen having the 1GD-FTD 2.8 litre 4cylinder diesel. The Prado we know in Aus is the 90, 120 and 150 series wagons, very different to your 78 'Prado'. The new generation 250 series is the new Prado for us and the Landcruiser for you guys. My daily driver is the LC200 with 4.5 litre V8 twin turbo diesel. You really haven't lived until you own a Landcruiser!
As a kid in the 80s, in Haiti, the well to does had Mitsubishi Pajeros. As well as their fancy cars. They were called Monteros other places. Us lower class families, my dad had Subaru 2dr hatchback/ wagons. He would show up every so often with a different one, usually from driving through flaming tire roadblocks and the collateral damage from it. Never stop at those road blocks.
Watching the video from Burundi Africa.these lc's are common my dad used to have one of these.i enjoyed the videos it brought so much childhood memories.the third row seats were my favorite
The JDM market and gray market stuff is fascinating. We live close the Canadian border and some of the stuff coming down is interesting, like the Toyota Sera with Gullwing doors.
Sweet whip, my dude. I fell in love with Toyotas when I bought my Tundra in 2001. Had to part with it in 2016 to give the growing kids more leg room, so traded it in on my 2016 Avalon Touring. Cheers!
Love this vid James, might have to investigate this as I hate all the intrusive electronics and excessive plastics on the current offerings here in Aus. Rock on Mr Booty Shorts!

James is in the intersection of having money, obscure tastes in life, and a wife who accepts it all... and I'm here for it!
Plus, skinny margaritas.
She really is a great sport with all our BS. Gave me a great reply comment once a few years back that had me rolling😂
The chad she hangs out with while james is out galavanting probably helps with the acceptance part
And he looks great in a pair of chubbies shorts
He makes all the money, why would she have any say it anything?
I drove a old Land Cruiser Prado in Iraq while on deployment there. There were a ton of them there. It ran, the ac worked, and it NEVER broke down. Best of all, it allowed us to "blend in" while traveling amongst the natives.
My parents had a 2001 Land Cruiser prado when they were stationed in Africa it was our favorite car, we took it off road and through Safaris the only complaint was it was under powered.
Yet you guys got smoked by natives at every intersection 🤣
We had two 2004 Land Cruiser diesels with manual transmissions issued to our teams while I was there 2005-2007. Those things were bullet proof, and the A/C was nice. I didn't think much of it at the time, but it would be nice owning that Land Cruiser diesel today.
Cool car, nice vid!!! Is it hard to maintain this car? I am saying that because a diesel engine and parts.❤
That’s great but most important of all, thank you for your service sir!
James gotta say I’m really enjoying your auto content man. Full speed ahead! I had a ‘92 Previa for years and the 90s Toyota interior brought back so many wild memories
Thank you! I'm really enjoying making it. More to come.
First the Kei Van, now this?
Truly a man of culture
I would love to see you in Japan with gun show interview vibes
70 Series has been on the bucket list for some time. I always knew you were a man of culture.
It's cool but not using such a vehicle as intended sucks...
The best part about this car-review video is that it doesn't have Doug DeMuro in it.
Doug has two dads
and THIS
is the J78 Prado!
If I'm feeling spiteful towards someone or some place I'll cast demuro to a tv and leave. He's truly awful.

Damn fine vehicle bro! 🤙🏻
Hands down most beautiful LC i hv ever seen ❤️🔥🔥🔥
I drive KZJ95 daily and I absolutely love it. it has the 1KZ-te with the intercooler and its never let me down. I plan to keep it forever
I’m liking the car reviews definitely carry on with them
I'm diggin' the car content James, and I do say, You have exquisite, albeit, very eclectic taste in vehicles.
I also have a KZJ78 and a FJ62. I love the Prado and it’s definitely a better all around daily but the 60 is just an icon for sure!
My late dad used to have one of these (2.8 Diesel) in the late 90s. I learned to drive in this, and a one tonner lorry. Also had a BJ 60 3.4 Diesel.
A man after my own heart… Ive had a 70 series on the list for a while now.
Sambar, Prado, Shorts with a 5 inch inseam, Mini14.... Clearly a man of culture
I recommend getting an LED light kit from odd iron off-road, I love their interior light kit, definitely an improvement over the stock lights.
The guy wearing a mont-bell rain jacket is that extra Japanese touch that I appreciate. He's legit.
Agreee ... Prado J70 ... is the best handsome land cruiser ever ...
Nice cruiser James, keep these cool videos coming
I love this car series you have been doing!
Strangely, I agree with your car taste more than your gun taste.
I had one of these in the early 2000's. Great fun. Had issues with the hubs and diff locks and got rid of it - really regret it now!
You’ve mastered the product review, I could watch you review paint colors and I’d still be intrigued.
I like your video all the work you put behind it , I wish more car people, could do what you just did, and the tone of your voice was just right 👍
The Pony Gentlemen’s Club. James you out did yourself again!
I really like the steering wheel...and that it's rugged enough to handle abandoned tennis courts.
Kzj78 owner here.
Hit the review on the spot.
Only gripe is the electronic contolled front hub locker.
Known to go bad best to change to manual lockers.
Truely a best blend of ultilitarian and creature comforts.
correct. I also had the same issue
Pulling someone out doesn’t prove anything
Legit. These videos are great.
I have the same exact year and model KZJ78W. Painted white revamped interior it looks like a gold
I always wanted a 1970’s FJ40. Very Cool!
we have loads of these where i live and dirt cheap, ive always prefered the heavy duty 70s over the prado but i think its growing on me now
Make more contents like this. More informative plus its totally diffrent. Kudos james...
Great video and epic Land Cruiser! You always have all the great info and ideas keep killing it fine sir.
I really like these cool, obscure but also rad, vehicle videos you’re doing! Micro bus, Land Cruiser….maybe a Hilux? Or 70’s Datsun pickup next??
I like where this channel is going.
These are on my wish list 😍
