Just a thought - is it possible that someone with low self-esteem fit into both internal and external loci of control? ie performed bad in an exam and blamed themselves; performed well and attribute it to easy marking?
that's a really good question
Desmond Chong Yes that's called a depressive attributional style. People don't just attribute events to completely internal or completely external causes, they tend to mix them. Your average person with a good sense of self esteem and self efficacy would do the opposite and generally attribute negative events to external causes and positive events to internal causes, so the theory goes.
It's actually a lot more complex and there are other dimensions but those are the basics.
+Rowboaty That makes a whole lot more sense. When there's a whole website dedicated to rating teachers it tells me that these people are falling into equal traits.
Yes, I do that. :p
Ahhh yes imposter syndrome 🤯
Being teacher is not matter but helping everyone to understand the concept through well explaination matters...
Thank you Khan academy team.. best wishes.
Self-efficacy is a branch of self-esteem, along with self-respect, and self-image. Living with a contradiction in your life, such as, I love my wife, I'm trying to sleep with another woman, will not effect your general self-efficacy but will damage your self-respect leading to a lowered self-esteem. Self-esteem requires a feeling of competence and a feeling of worthiness.
An internal locus of control is a quality important to me in other people- I didn't realize till it was spelled out. Excuses are a detriment to growth of character and spirit.
Internal locus of control is how people grow and reflect on their own lives, i agree

I fluctuate between having high and low self esteem and efficacy throughout the week, it's exhausting.
Thank you. You broke it down really well, simplified it, and made it easy to understand.

Locus Control (
Great video, thank you for posting this as it has really helped me in my coursework.
It's such an interesting thing because as I was listening to this I was thinking: It's weird that I have very poor self-esteem but at the same time, I feel extremely capable in most situations. Then the video said exactly that XD
I really enjoyed the content of this video as well as the pleasant soothing voice of the narrator. Thanks for making and sharing this!
Thanks so much as always for these videos! Can people also have both internal & external “locus of control”? Is it also possible to have both strong and weak self-efficacy?
We can increasing or decreasing our self efficacy and it depends on several things, such as :
1. Performance accomplishment. Our achievements in the past can affect our self efficacy. If we get a good achievement, it will increase our self efficacy and vice versa
2. Vicarious Experience. We can increase our Self Efficacy by watching others achievement. It's like motivate ourself. But, it will decrease when we see someone that we think have the same abilities as us and then they fail.
3. Social Persuation. Others believe on us can increase our self efficacy.
4. Emotional Psychological States. Strong emotions can decrease our self efficacy but sometimes it can increase too.
We're always changing our positions unless we have a sufficient 'self awareness ' and practicing consciously of ourselves to being more and fairly in internal locus!...
like this style of teaching when I learned corporate finance in school, but would prefer to see a human for this type of topic.
thank you so much! now i understand the difference :)
what does the lack stand for in the FALL acronym? i'm assuming it is lack of commitment but that wasn't really made clear in the description...
Thanks for sharing 7:59 ! Clearly explained and easy to understand😊
Thanks I'll use this for my tesis work, although I don't understand about locus at all
Thanks again.
Is there any difference between self efficacy and self confident??..plz describe🙏🙏
Awesome. Thank you for sharing this video with the world :)
How to put into practice effectively
In my external locus of control, Destiny
Excellent video, thanks for sharing.
so, we need to have medium self esteem, self efficacy and right proportion of locus lf control ?
What is the difference between self efficacy and internal locus of control?
Excellent explanation, Shreena!
You're amazing 🙏
I have Internal locus of control, Average Self-steem and low Self Efficacy on my personal relationships. How can i fix that?! I dont really see any one around that i can relate to as a social model. I dont know, its like every one is doing ok but i get freaked and burn my chances... im telling you, the feeling is like geting inside a hungry lion cage... Now at least i know my issue is at self efficacy.. now how to fix it is not at the video
Where can I find methods for going from External locus of control to internal?
Has it been proven that it is possible to do that change? Or is that something that happens in childhood and structures you for life?
If it is possible to change, that would mean that it is possible to re-motivate someone?
Go do your normal tasks in your day,but take time to appreciate that YOU did that and that with YOUR work you did that and that YOU'RE the reason the task was done.
Well explained! thanks
Thank you
Wow she has great handwriting
Someone with an Internal Locus of Control. Wouldn't they needlessly blame themselves for things in their life that aren't in their control?
This is what causes phobias & hyper-vigilance in people with PTSD. There's a part of their mind insisting that they can avoid what happened from happening again, if they just try hard enough, if they just control hard enough, if they just stay alert enough, be vigilant enough at all times. :(
thats me
Indeed. When the truth is we don't control shit. We think we do, but we don't.
Having an internal-locus-of control doesn’t mean you blame yourself for what’s truly out of your control. It means you don’t blame external factors inappropriately and you give yourself the credit for your hard work/efforts appropriately.
brilliantly done
are there references for this.. where did you get these ideas from.. just interested so that I can further investigate.. I head you mention Bandura and Carl Rogers? Is this a conflation of both their ideas?
There are lots of Psychologist use those ideas to provide their theory. But i personally know Self Efficacy from one of Bandura's ideas on Social Learning Theory. You can check them in several good psychology books
Thank you, very well explained. May I ask what was the programm you used to display and record this? The black board and everything... Thanks in advance.
03:36, "Mastery of experience"? Surely you mean experience of mastery right?
Could you give an exemple of someone with high self-esteem but low self-efficacy?
+SeiryuNanago A number of narcissists have high self-esteem but low self-efficacy.
@@Fhiona Oh shit.... So I'm a narcissist?
nice video
🙏
Locus of control becomes external when people start fucking with your firewalls 🔒
Stress is good.
Look up Kelly McGonagal - The upside of stress.
Not all stress is good.
It is good only if it is 1) Small 2) Short Term 3) Followed by Adequate Recovery Period.
thanks - nnice

I'm no psychologist, but that sounds like Schizophrenia.
What is a "head" from your point of view?
Go outside for a walk and realized when you are with strangers that it's just you and none of those other people are there. You do exist.
😮 😅
little louder for those of us in the back
Nope
The whole thing is nonsense. For example In American society, more often than not, you don't really have a choice or choices you have are equally bad. Suppose your teacher is unfair, doesn't do her work, and shifts all the blame on you. In the American education system, you don't have many choices actually. Your teachers act like "dictators" and nothing stopping them from doing whatever they want. In the UK, for example, your grades are determined by objective exams which are developed by examiners hired specifically for that purpose. You know the content and grading methods years in advance. So, guys in the UK might be found to have an "internal locus of control" while US ones "external", but in reality, it's the environment that determines what "locus" they have.
Now, suppose, for example, you are a natural doormat or you have been trained to be doormat since young (hee). You do whatever your teacher asked you to do. For you, other guys are just having an "external locus of control" or "depressed" while you "internal locus". It gives you an ego boost and an excuse to judge others but not much substance.
