I recently did my first Oxford build, their Taj Mahal. It was a gift. I know Lego also has one and it looks different. I don’t know if I’ll get that one though just to do a side by side comparison. My feeling with doing this one build is the bricks themselves are good quality but I was less impressed with the actual build. Part of it was the slightly less stability that is mentioned in this video. It’s hard to describe; but I found a lack of cleverness in the build itself. There are points during a Lego build where you kinda just feel “Oh! Cool!” With a particular technique to get a certain effect and I just never got that with my Oxford build. There’s also a general feel that every step in a Lego build is more purposeful … like doing the steps in that order is just the best way to get there. With the Oxford build, I felt at times they wanted me to build one part first then move to a different part so I wouldn’t get bored with too much repetition because later it would come back to do the same thing as the first part and there really was no reason to do the middle part in between them. All that said, the Oxford kit was fun to build and the finished model looks pretty nice. So I think if someone wants a model that Lego just doesn’t make but Oxford does, like a licensed Dunkin Donut shop, few would be disappointed. Also, it occurs to me some Oxford kits might be just fine for people who want to create their own builds particularly if they can get Oxford bricks cheaper because the bricks do work just fine.
I have a few oxford sets in my city and i love them. Actually it was you that got me into them...i love their different designs. Yeah..they arent lego but they are fun AND you can always swap out bits with lego. I havent built this one yet...youve inspired me to crack it open👍😉
Annette awesome! Which ones do you have? Dunkin? I think Oxford sets are fun and the quality is high as well. It’s not Lego for sure, but they certainly are my go-to-sets when I want something different. Thanks for being such a great supporter of my channel!
@@DrMcBrick Well it all started with the video you did on the hardware store (which isn't oxford but I bought that one because I loved the design) - then i discovered Oxford and just LOVED their designs. I used to be a Lego purist but honestly I don,t beat myself up about it anymore because if Lego released the same designs I would certainly buy them and I think Oxford is a good quality brick for the price. They aren't cheap for sure and not incredibly easy to get (amazingly) but I've done well. I have: the donut shop, 7 eleven, game room, scooter shop, radio studio, ice cream shop and curry house and a couple more I can't find (yes - scary back log). i'm about to embark on the donut shop build seeing as the box was delivered damaged and can't wait to get it in my city. My aim is to build them and 'pimp' them up a bit with lego pieces and figures to make them blend into my city - perhaps even moc them and add a story. Hoping to get them up on instagram asap so i can share (need to update my phone so I can join instagram :-/) So yes - I am a total non purist now but I dont' care what anyone says - it's my city and I'll build what gives me joy - it's fun to discover these new sidestreams from lego. And of course I still buy Lego :-) I admire you for adding them to your city! You inspired me !
Annette Wow! You have a whole lot of Oxford! I’m humbled that I inspired you and I can’t wait to see all of the Oxford builds. I’ve been wanting to get the game room for some time now. I’ve put it in my cart on eBay several times but. Never purchased it. Maybe I will someday.
@@DrMcBrick awe thanks kindly. I will def show them to you when i get around to building all of them. I have only built some but not yet the game room but i think its gonna be one of my favs. Its actually on sale online over here in aus at the moment (the trader name escapes me right now but if its of interest to u let me know and I'll find the site and let you know ). They are pricey and I will admit i also hesitated a bit but i just love their concepts so much. Will send you some pics in near future. Im in awe of figsdale...its a great inspiration to me always.
BrickTsar Thanks! I’m always torn because when I build Oxford, I kind of feel like I’m “cheating” on Lego LOL. Some of their sets are really cool. We bought 3 more that we thought were neat and are going to do videos of them as well. Then I think that will be it for our Oxford sets.
Thanks for the honest appraisal of this set. Agree it looks very good, especially the internal details. I love those 1x1 hinge fixings for the lights! The build quality might not be the 100% you expect from LEGO, but if you like the building, I see no reason why it shouldn't find a place in Figsdale. I would keep the Oxford Bricks out of your general parts bins though!
(I am commenting before watching the whole video so I may edit) The thing I'm more concerned with is If they'll fit with the Legos I already have which are on brand, because they look amazing But I don't want to get them if they won't work with my other Legos
Im happy ur not one of the LEGO=good literally everything else involving bricks=bad people ur open minded u just got a subscriber 👍keep up the good work and i think u should put dunkin donuts in figsdale
I disagree with you on many issues you highlighted in the review. Oxford blocks brick are mostly as good as Lego. Everything is durable. And even the sound of the bricks is the same.
Thanks for the comments. I agree with you that Oxford is second only to Lego in the brick world. Since I did that video, I built other Oxford sets (a few are reviewed on the channel) and I've said many times that Oxford is just a tad below Lego in most categories but they are excellent in their own right. In fact, I'm dedicating a street in my Lego city of Figsdale to a few Oxford sets. :-) Thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment!
I get that a lot of people don't like Lego knockoffs because they don't feel as good and they don't fit together as well.. Which is a legitimate concern. But Lego's patent is expired. So this isn't really an intellectual property issue. It's capitalism.
GJBricks - Good point about the clone term! That’s what makes it tough because it’s really not a bad set. I like the SET but I definitely would not want to build freestyle with their bricks. Ultimately, I’m a Lego purist too ...it’s funny because I told my step-son “make sure we don’t mix these with the Lego bricks. Let’s keep them in a separate box just use Oxford on Oxford and Lego on Lego.” LOL
Dr. McBrick ha ha! I got a big back of bricks off of marketplace recently and it had a ton of the hasbro blocks. They look similar but they just aren’t quite right.
GJBricks I hear ya! All other brand bricks are missing that secret sauce. Don’t know what it is, but it’s almost instinctually noticeable. Lego = perfection every time.
Dr. McBrick even down to the plants from plants set 40320. Just wish there was somewhere to acquire that in Oz other than the only two LEGO stores which are 8hrs drive from me!
GJBricks - ouch. That’s a long haul. I’m spoiled here. We have a Lego store and Legoland Discovery Center w/store all in the same shopping center about 20 mins from me. I got my plant set from Lego.com shop at home though. Check there maybe.
I just came across your channel cool review yes oxford blocks not bad sets The wange golden gate bridge is cool Brick me up Scottie Has funny reviews Thats your set and your city Care more about you and what your family feels about sets Your city is cool and set would be SWEET in there
brick_trucker nick Thanks for your kind words and and thanks for watching the channel! We’ll try to keep the videos real and authentic. It’s just me and my family with real bricks. Again, thanks for watching!
Good to see you're not one of those "Only LEGO's good / All other brands are bad" people.

Oxford is indeed legit and this is one that I think is neat

Dr. McBrick make a big space museum and put it in the city

Still looks very nice
"Sandwitches" -- maybe you don't want to know what kind of meat they use.
Lol
Sometimes its fun to build something different as long as it is not ripping off Lego
Traci Anglesey I completely agree, and the Oxford sets just look so cool.
A set of our DD stickers would “really” make this set magical! Very cool set!
Oxford sets make the sets that LEGO does not make but GOOD ONE👍🏻
i love the honest review. 😊
Thank you.

Thank you for that. There is room for all legit brands.
Dr. McBrick will you put it in figsdale
Hi can you share the instructions on pdf file on description ?I trying to make same but in lego ;) thanks
I've never built an Oxford set and never saw one in a store that I recall. I'm gonna keep my eyes open though cause this one looks great
Omg that’s so cool
That so cool

But is it a LEGO clone given it’s compatible?
Not a bad looking set and great sticker/printed pieces. But I’m a purist....

Plz use the minifigures
"steal the designs of Lego"
Bullshit. Try to get McDonalds at LEGO, or Dunkin Donuts. NOTHING. Blame LEGO for their own downfall, not the copycats.
