Is this type of rope rough on the skin of toddlers? If so, have you tried using a 3 Strand Nylon rope? I'm curious if the slices would hold up as well or if they would slide around.
I think this rope would be great for toddlers. Nylon would work fine too. Don’t worry about the splices sliding around because they are locked in no matter the type of rope. This splices should work for any three strand rope.
Thanks! It’s really not much extra at all because it isn’t a knot. The ropes are in essence just passing through one another. Maybe give yourself 4-6 inches but that’s probably overkill. Better safe than sorry though because you will have to take the whole thing apart if you get to the end and are left without enough rope on the vertical to tie off the eye splice. Just give yourself plenty of extra and cut off what you don’t need.
Hi again :) I was wondering if there’s a way I can contact you directly with some questions I have while making my net for my kids. My splices seem to be sliding when you put pressure on them and I’m not sure what is wrong. I Was hoping to share a video or picture with you for advice. Is there a way on RUclips I can do this ?
Hi Sarah. The piping is actually the “top rail” used in chain link fencing. It comes in 10’ sections and is 1-3/8” in diameter. This is available at Lowes or Home Depot and can be cut using a hack saw. The connecting pieces (end rail clamps) are also made for chain link fencing. I purchased mine from discountfence.com (scroll down to Chain Link Fencing and you’ll find it under Fittings) be sure to also stock up carriage bolts which you can also find on that page.
Is it possible to use this splice without tying the sides ? I want the net to hang from the top only and fall freely. I was thinking to weave individual cut ropes horizontally but I’m not sure how to prevent the sides from sliding out. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
You could splice the ends of the horizontal ropes in with the left and right vertical ropes but that would be time consuming. There are lots of videos on splicing 3-strand rope and many ways of doing it. Alternatively, you could use one long piece (as shown in the video) but simply omit the side poles. This would result in loops on the sides. If you’re okay with the loops then this would be easier than splicing in my opinion. Otherwise you always need to splice a proper end wherever you cut the rope or it will come unraveled.
@@EricWoollen OK! Thank you so much for the reply. I never did anything like this before and thought maybe I could duct tape the ends so they don’t fray but I like the idea of using one long rope. Thank you for your advice !
Thanks for watching! The rope material is Polypropylene. www.e-rigging.com/1-inch-x-300-foot-tan-Polypropylene-Rope. See description for other helpful links as well.
I wish I knew. I learned it from a video that I linked in the description titled “Splicing a cargo net”. That was the only other video in all of RUclips that I could find on this splice, which led me to make my own video.
thank you.
making a net for my sons pirate ship.
I just put it on a spring bed so it rocks.
this is exactly the knot I need to complete the project!
Glad it worked out for you. Thanks for watching!
Excellent video! I love splicing 3-strand, and have been toying with the idea of doing a cargo net for my truck bed... you know, for fun!

Thanks! Been looking for this!
You’re welcome! Glad I could help.
best cargo climbing net video out there p.s. great host
Thanks for watching!
Well, this is very nice. I was thinking of using a two strand crown knot... but thsi would make a smoother climbing surface... thanks.
You might want to use a marlin spike in future... nice job and great eye-spices at the top!
Thanks! Yes, that probably would have saved me some pain in my fingers. Thanks for watching!
Awesome, thanks!
Good video. Roughly, how much extra do you figure for each splice on the verticals? Keep up the great work.

This is an amazing technique, can I do this with a natural rope as well or will it not hold the knot in place like the synthetic rope?
Thanks! I’ve only tried it with this one rope but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work with any three strand rope.

Is that piping forming the frame around your cargo net? Can you describe what you used for the frame around the net, pieces, etc.?

Hello, very good work.
Do you think the knots can support load, I mean is it good for adult climbing
Yes 100%. I’m on there all the time with the kiddos. Thanks for watching!
