Zanac made a lot of diplomatic blunders, but his intent shines through. He wasn't searching to increase his power or maximize his gains. He was focused on saving his people and, when that was not possible, he tried to minimize their suffering. He was even willing to take up arms for it, despite being outmatched. Flawed as he was, he had the heart of a true king.

For people who don't know why Ainz was shocked that Zanac drank the water. It's because if Ainz was in his position he would suspect the water would be poisoned but Zanac drank it without fear nor hesitation, which increased his respect for the King. He also respected Zanac because if Ainz was in his shoes he would not be able to put up such a brave face at all.

Interestingly, after his interaction with king Zanac, Ainz was seriously considering accepting the Kingdom's surrender plea and putting an end to his invasion on it. That's the scope of the impression Zanac left on Ainz from just 1 talk, which further shines light on his insistence that the king be buried honorably; that his traitorous nobles and generals be tortured severely and killed slowly; and that the Kingdom be fully destroyed. After his death, Ainz genuinely felt that there was no more decency left in the kingdom. All of the pity, guilt and regret he felt for the kingdom dissappeard when he saw Zanac's head in that bag.

He was trying to think of a way to change course without the Guardians thinking he is weak, because his greatest fear is that the incredibly powerful, incredibly dangerous, incredibly evil creatures that surround him will realize that he is out of his depth, lose faith in him, and abandon him, leaving him alone in the New World.
But then the idiot nobles went and did what they did, and all that mercy went out the window. He already knew that Re-Estize was incredibly corrupt thanks to the reports from Shalltear, Sebas, Solution and others, but after the actions of the nobles he decided that it was irredeemable.

Zanac was denied a dignified death, a chance to serve his people one last time before buckling to the immense forces of Nazarick. The tragedy isn't the decimation of a kingdom, but the fact that their true collapse came from within. When the nobles beheaded Zanac, they only confirmed what Ainz hated them for. What good is the loyalty of a "noble" when it results in selling out the man still fighting for their country? There's no point in constantly chastising an animal that can't escape its own nature. No wonder Ainz sought to make them an example, a tragic tale created by no fault of his own.

But I think at this stage even if he weren't at all afraid, he would still act as he does. Ainz at this point in time places little to no value in the vast majority of humans. He doesn't wish to eradicate or painfully subjugate them like Albedo or Demiurge do, but he's also pretty ambivalent to the suffering of basically anyone he isn't directly involved with. He basically says exactly this in his talk with Zanac, and there's no implication that he's being dishonest here.
When he agrees, for example, to spare some humans in his assault on the kingdom, he does so not out of any love for them, but rather because he wants to make Nigredo, Sebas, and Pestonya happy. Again, he doesn't really hold any malice or ill will towards humans in general either, he just sees them as flies- not worth protecting but not worth exterminating either (unless they act in a way that changes their image in his eyes)

To those saying Ainz had second thoughts, behold! A WILD SOURCE MATERIAL APPEARS!
“We can’t win…,” one noble whispered.
Zanac agreed. “Yet, fighting is our only option. I offered him our capitulation. In vain. Once again, the only way we survive this is to fight.”
“Perhaps for you, Your Highness. But if we impress him, perhaps he will allow us to escape. Our lives in exchange for yours.”
That got them all chattering at once.
“This is all the fault of that idiot who attacked their convoy! We’re not to blame!”
“We pledge loyalty to the King of Darkness!”
To Zanac’s ears, these words were indistinguishable from the prattling of young court ladies idly discussing their ideal knights over tea and crumpets.
“Let me be clear on one point. Attempting to capture me will get you nowhere. I am a prince, here to fight until the bitter end. If you come at me, know that it may cost you your life.”
Honestly, what a mess this all turned out to be.
At the hands of his own allies. What an unseemly end.
Perhaps he should consider it a stroke of luck these fools would perish here and cause no trouble for his father and sister.
With that warrior by her side, these fools would never put Renner down. “If you want my head, come and take it!”
Zanac drew his sword, and the war minister stood by his side.
He had no confidence in his skills, but his equipment was far superior. When none of them moved, he glared.
“What? You came here with blood on your swords! You chose not the way of the poison chalice! The moment you dirtied your own hands, you must have been prepared for it to end like this!”
    The insurrectionists exchanged glances.
Clearly, they hadn’t thought that far ahead. Zanac found that disappointing. He would have preferred to die at the hands of someone aware of the consequences.
In the face of the armies of darkness, fear had drawn their heartstrings too taut, and they had snapped, rushing headlong into this foolish mistake.
Perhaps he had never been cut out to be king. He possessed none of his father’s magnetism, his brother’s authority, or his sister’s wits. But that was fine. He had never really wanted to be king. He had only wanted to make this country better.
    Indeed.
The country, the citizens, and his family… He had just wanted them to be happy.
One of the noblemen yelled something at the tent flap, and several burly mercenaries came rushing in.
Zanac swore under his breath, then remembered how his brother swung the blade. He did his best to imitate that roar as he charged into the fray.
Ainz was discussing the assault on the capital with Cocytus, Aura, and Mare when Albedo came back from checking the final formations with a frown on her face. He turned toward her, wondering what had happened.
“Lord Ainz, the enemy have fallen into disarray.” “…What? Disarray? How so?”
Ainz rose to his feet and stepped outside. There was definitely something going on. It looked like they were turning on one another.
Eventually a group of knights came charging out of the formation. It did not look like they were trying to land the first blow of the battle.
Ainz and his minions watched in silence as they approached the Nation of Darkness camp. From the ramshackle gear, these had to be a group of mercenaries, accompanied by the nobles who’d hired them.
An older man in aristocratic finery emerged from the host of imposing fighters. He called out, his voice tinged with hysteria, and the wind caught his words, carrying them to Ainz’s ears.
“We wish to speak with the King of Darkness! Prithee!”
Zanac was not among them. Between the evident disarray and this small breakaway group, he had a hunch what had gone down.
    “Albedo, bring them to me.”
Albedo bowed her head, but Ainz didn’t even look her way. He turned back to his tent and sat down upon his makeshift throne. The three guardians inside spoke not a word as they took their places beside him.
Soon, Albedo entered with a dozen or so nobles in tow. Their guards were forced to wait outside.
They flinched at the sight of Ainz, gasped at the sight of Cocytus, and were baffled by the presence of Aura and Mare.
“Bask in the glory of His Majesty’s visage!”
The kingdom nobles took a knee by the entrance, bowing low.
“Raise your heads,” Albedo intoned before finally taking her place by Ainz. “An honor to be graced with your presence, Your Majesty,” the eldest noble
said, apparently speaking for the group. From the deference the others showed, he was clearly the leader. “We are but supplicants awed by your grandeur, wishing only to serve beneath your feet. First, we bring you this gift…”
One of them thrust out a bag. Albedo started to step forward, but Ainz stopped her. He rose slowly from his throne-a move he’d rehearsed many times before-and stepped toward the nobleman.
    He took the bag.
    Not a trap, then.
Rather disappointed, he inspected the gift.
He could smell fresh blood wafting from inside. It was all too easy to predict the contents.
Ainz opened it anyway, peering inside. His eyes met Zanac’s.
He looked back at some length. He had only just met the man for the first time, so it was hard to rule out the possibility of a look-alike. But from their behavior, the odds of that were not high.
Ainz closed the bag, handing it to Albedo on his way back to the throne. “Give that a proper burial.”
They still had more than enough bodies to create undead from. There was no need to make use of Zanac’s.
“What happened to the armor he was wearing?”
The gathered nobles looked confused. Likely they thought bringing the head of their commander would earn them lavish praise.
“Well?” Albedo hissed. “Do you intend to not answer Lord Ainz’s question?” “R-right, the, um… I believe the prince’s body is still in his tent,” the leader
    managed to blurt out.
“Oh. Fine. You have done well.”
They looked delighted and bowed their heads again. “Fine work deserves a fine reward. What is it you wish?”
“Please, spare our families, Your Majesty! We swear unswerving loyalty to you and you alone!”
This cry went up from a nobleman toward the rear of the group. The urgency was apparent on his face. The leader spoke up as well.
“Silence! But my wish is the same. Your Majesty, we beg for clemency.” Each of them quickly voiced their agreement. Ainz calmly raised a hand,
    stopping their cries.
“Very well. I understand your request. You are all in agreement on this?” They nodded vigorously.
“Then we shall not kill you. Albedo-have them sent to Neuronist.” “-Understood.”
“Your Majesty, our families…,” one whispered. Ainz did not let that pass. “Them too?” He smirked. But they did not catch his meaning. “You’ve talked
me into it. Albedo, find out where their families are located and send them all
    together.”
“As you wish, Lord Ainz. Gentlemen, this way.”
Albedo led the noblemen out of the tent. Once they were out of earshot, Ainz beckoned Aura over.
“Tell Neuronist not to kill them until they beg for death.” “You got it, Lord Ainz!”
Aura started to move, but he caught her hand. She looked surprised. “And keep them alive for a long while even after they do.” “Okay!”
He let go, and Aura took that to mean his orders were complete. She ran out after Albedo.
Ainz watched her go, giving orders to the remaining guardians.
“I’ve lost all interest in this farce. Cocytus, take command with Mare as your second. I’ll allow you both to join the fight if you so wish. Do not allow a single kingdom citizen to leave here alive.”
Their voices echoed in the affirmative.
And an hour later-the Re-Estize Kingdom’s last army vanished from this world.

I liked Prince Zanac, he seemed quite clever and thought ahead, unlike his brother who only had glory in his head and his sister who seemed to be altruistic but was actually a crazy attentionseaker who acted rashly. His plan to seize and retain power was both wise and honorable, he never resorted to assassinations or actions against his people, etc., he allied with his sister to defeat the criminal organization his brother worked with. He allied with Markuez to keep the nobility in check. He saw his father's mistakes but he still respected him. He did not treat the nobility with any privilages just because of their class and was able to give the head of a nobleman guilty of theft to Ainz to prevent a war. But he also did not mindlessly murder his opponents like the emperor who purged the nobility who were disloyal to him, which made it difficult to carry out reforms. He was clever, just and brave. He also fought until the end.
Ultimately, he die due to the desperation of rebels and the bloodthirstiness of Ainz's advisors, whom Ainz himself did not stop, but followed their advice of total war.
He did not flaunt his bravery like a brother, nor his pseudo-kindness like a sister, he did not treat his nobility leniently like Ainz, nor was he a coward like the emperor.
I think Zanac would be a good king, I dare say he was the best leadership candidate in the entire series. Rest in peace true King Zanac.

The only thing that could make him feel better was to torture the cowardly nobles until they begged for the very thing they killed their prince to avoid, death. And then they would be healed up to perfect health and tortured some more.

    • @Archedgar
      @Archedgar Месяц назад

Sort of. The anime does a (very) terrible job explaining it but Ainz's emotional stabilizer is like a bar that fills up to 100%. Once it fills, it neutralizes his emotion down to zero though he can re-evoke emotions. Anyway if it's at 99%, it **very** slowly decreases in intensity. Far slower than a human's emotion would, and as a result when Ainz is at 99% it's much worse than anything else. So kind of like 'internalizing' but the undead equivalent.
It happened twice in the anime; Once when he found Ninya corpse and again here where he's handed Zanac's head.

Zanac might lack talent, intelligence (like Renner or Jircniv) and was weak. But he has guts to try, an important trait a ruler needs. Not many can accept ones fate and agree with an enemy’s POV. Above all, he earned Ainz respect. If you ask me, he could have been a great ruler.
    RESPECT! 😢

These few minutes. In these few minutes he didn't just earn the respect of millions of people, no, he earned the respect of ainz. And not just to any degree. He earned it to the degree where ainz promised him and his army his biggest mercy that he had to offer, a instant death without pain. When he sat on his throne he even thought of how to give the whole kingdom a painless death and even thought about accepting their surrender. That's the degree that zanac earned his respect. The highest or atleast nearly highest degree that could be earned from ainz. If it weren't for betraying zanac, the nobles would have had a merciful instant death without pain. Zanac would have been a good king. He did everything that he could for his country and people and was backstabbed. I wished he had gotten a better fate.

I mean, I was already interested in Zanac even before this scene with how he was handling the Kingdom despite the shitty nobles, his soft King and his brother's death. I could tell he was an alright guy even though my first impression of him initially was just another spoiled prince but this very scene right here made him one of my favourite characters in the series. He wasn't even afraid or leaned towards doing anything desperate or pathetic, he held his ground and accepted his fate gracefully. He even saw through Ainz and realized that he had such a human mindset about what he's doing. His death9
cleared any doubts that Ainz had when he wanted to annihilate the Kingdom, there's nothing interesting left with those shameless assholes.

Perhaps the only one to even scratch the surface of Ainz Ooal Gown’s empathy. I think Ainz realised in some respect that he liked someone like Zanac.
Not a sycophant or mindless servant but someone who would challenge his morals and ideals with a virtue of his own to decry any possibility of hypocrisy.
Calling him a monster and a fiend holds no weight when scum say it, but genuine nobility? That gives him enough reason to pause.

But you seem to be missing one key point with all of that, he's an undead. Throughout the entire story of overlord so far everyone has show clear as day biased for the undead, you noticed the first thing any human in the new world say when it comes to ainz is "because he's an undead...." He wouldn't be able to keep his people out of harms way if adventures actively try to hunt him down, his name would be slandered to hell, to sum it up who would want to sit down and have a conversation with an undead overlord (would you?)

Lots of people think that Zanac left such an impression on Ainz that he was reconsidering the invasion on the kingdom, but that doesn't hold up after reading the light novels. What Ainz says to Zanac is true. In his mind, backing down after coming this far would lead to Nazarick questioning his authority. Even after speaking with Zanac, Ainz was not going to change his mind. He does experience a moment of regret after their conversation. Ainz ponders that if circumstances were different, Zanac would have made a powerful ally. Perhaps if he'd been left to stew in his thoughts, he might have begun to reconsider his plan. However, then the nobles bring him Zanac's head, and all thoughts of regret fly out the window.
